The Epilepsy Foundation Announces the Launch of AthletesVsEpilepsy.com

Epilepsy News From: Thursday, August 20, 2015

The Epilepsy Foundation is excited to announce the launch of its new website – AthletesVsEpilepsy.com. The website provides the most comprehensive resource for individuals who wish to get involved and make an impact by raising funds and awareness for epilepsy through athletics.

The Foundation’s Athletes vs Epilepsy initiative is a nationwide program for athletes, coaches, volunteers, and fans. The program seeks to raise awareness, build participation, and help fund the Foundation’s mission. The initiative brings epilepsy and seizure awareness to different sports through participation by athletes of all ages and skill levels, as well as their supportive friends, family, and fans.

“Athletes vs Epilepsy aligns beautifully with our goal to help people with epilepsy and seizures experience all that life has to offer,” said Phil Gattone, president and CEO of the Epilepsy Foundation. “All of the athletes involved – whether they have epilepsy or care for someone with seizures – are inspirations and role models. Each of them is dedicated to stopping seizures and SUDEP, finding a cure, and overcoming the challenges life has put in front of them.”

Athletic events provide a prime opportunity to bring together like-minded individuals who are passionate about a sport or team. Their passion and energy is directed toward a common goal: to overcome a challenge, to surpass an obstacle, and to win.

Athletes vs Epilepsy creates awareness and raises funds for the core mission of the Foundation by building partnerships with high-profile athletes, community leaders, and individuals living with or supporting others living with epilepsy. The program reinforces that anyone, regardless of athletic talent, can help to raise awareness about seizures and funds to support services and research for new therapies.

“I am awed by and proud of the athletes who have stepped up their game and joined us,” said Geoff Pope, Athletes vs Epilepsy co-chair and Super Bowl Champion. “Whether they are a professional athlete, weekend warrior, or school student, each of them has a story filled with passion, endurance, and courage that drives them to support the nearly 3 million people in the U.S. who have epilepsy.”

AthletesVsEpilepsy.com provides information on a variety of opportunities to participate:

  • Signature Events: Athletes vs Epilepsy has partnered with events across the nation, including bike races, 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, and endurance races.
  • Choose Your Own Events: Athletes can join the program and participate in the event of their choosing while raising funds and awareness.
  • Do It Yourself: Supporters can register to create their own events to raise funds and build awareness.

The website features the stories of many of our athletes as they strive to overcome their own challenges with epilepsy or to help raise funds and awareness in honor of a friend or family member living with epilepsy. It also features information about our Athlete Ambassadors, the latest news stories, training and motivational tips, and fundraising tools and opportunities for you to get involved.
