Keppra XR - Generic Version

I just took some prescriptions to be refilled, including one for Keppra XR.  My pharmacist informed me that a new generic version of Keppra XR just came out.  Normally, my neurologist only wants me to use the brand due to differences in fillers that have caused break through seizures in some patients.  Of course, there is a huge cost difference.  I switched from regular Keppra to Keppra XR when the Keppra generic came out because of this.  It worked out well as the XR version actually works better for me.

Does anyone have any experience with Keppra XR generic?

I actually came on here to ask the same question (:    Our situation is exact! Hopefully someone will

respond after having the generic experience! Do we mess with a change if the XR is working??? Its

tempting with that cost difference isnt it...

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

My Dr. decided to keep me on the brand - no big surprise.  However, I am on a high deductible healtch care plan at work and have a health care savings account (HSA.)  Usually, I have to pay full price for my first prescription or two at the beginning of the year, and then my deductible is met, and after that, I just use the HSA funds to pick up the price of the brand meds.  It's really been helpful to have the HSA.

I was on a regular health insurance program before, and was nervous about switching to the high deductible plan, but it's cheaper, and I can put the savings into the HSA (plus some extra.)  I'd really encourage anyone who is considering switching to such a plan to do the math and give it a try.  You can probably switch back if you don't like it.

Anyway, maybe these companies putting out the generics will get smart and use the exact fillers the brand companies use, if they can.  It sure would be nice to pay the generic prices.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

Hi my husband was put on gen Keppra XR about two weeks ago.  This is the only pill he has ever taken though.  We are just recently diagnosed with complex partial seizures.  There is two main side effects that we are dealing with.  1:  He's tired all of the time but he has trouble staying asleep at night 2: He is irritated very easily.  This is the main one of concern because he is hard to be around sometimes because everything makes him mad.  Our dr wants us to give it two more weeks before we start looking at other med options.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

Keppra XR has worked the best for me of all the meds I've tried so do give it a while before you change. The sleep factor is similar for me but know he can help by using melatonin and adequate exersize. For me it's worth it to not have seizures. Where I have the problem is co$t, as my co-pay is $450 for 7 of 12 months. Hope our gov either changes generic copy requirements demanding producers to get the formula right or lowering cost of brand name for the lesser financially capable.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

The other would be for 'we the people' to get more agressive tward regulation change and require AMA and FDA to release the full formulation disclosure for the good of the people! Please help me to find the correct person to contact for regulation change and quality review ratings of generics!

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

I am also in the same boat.. But my Dr. had told me before there was too much risk with just taking the generic brand and to stay on Keppra Xr.  Since insurance is refusing to pay any money toward the medicine, I am looking into ways to offset the $ 850 cost, the increase of about $ 560..

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

We wanted to come on here and post a POSITIVE story for once on generic Keppra. My husband suffers from partial onset seizures but has not had a grand mal seizure in 6 years since getting on Keppra. We went through the same problem when the generic Keppra came out and due to the no generic loophole went on Keppra XR. When the new generic was released last month we made the decision to go on the generic rather than pay the $600 difference. We were terrified to say the least. we read stories about break through seizures, headaches and more.

We are happy to say that we had ZERO, I mean ZERO problems switching to the generic. In fact, his partial onset seizures are shorter in duration so we feel it's better. We hope that this story finds those who are worried about the switch. I know everyone is different, but it worked for us!

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

Since changing to Keppra XR my partials have been eliminated. Might just take a little bit more to do the job. I agree, the co$t sucks!

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

Hoping to get more replies on the observed differences from former K-XR users to generic. Certainly was dissappointed my self at the generic for 'non-xr' so it will take some real experience using generic K-XR to convince me. Please let me know .. and if you've seen other places to get valid opinions or reviews. Does anyone take Teva generic? and have you noticed any negative changes?  In my reading about generic Keppra XR seems obvious that to go generic is still a BIG mistake. I really do appreciate viewers responces and personally want to thank you as my change from generic to brand name has truely made a difference [I'm not a UCB owner, associate, advocate, investor, advertiser,...or in anyway do I promote them (UCB) or it] Hopes are our voices are heard and our GOV makes the changes needed to get the price down for at least those who are without as I.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

I wouldn't touch any generic AED! On 4/26/13 I found out how lucky I was to have taken five days of personal medicine along with me to a hospital to have a leg operation, I kept the real things with me. Even though they attempted at 10pm to provide me with a generic version of Keppra XR, at 7pm I'd took my brand name ones. I take 1500mgs. at both 7am and 7pm which is twice daily, I know 3000mgs only needs to be taken once a day..
I'd rather pay the difference in cost for brand name than generic crap. Cause of the quality difference there's a different price. Timothy Baldwin

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

I do not know if it was the generic but my seizures got progressivly worse and i had keppra rage, i would not in my opinion take any generic aed again

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

As has been pointed out by others be cautious about generic AEDs.  Check manufacturers with your pharmacist. You may find one that works for you.

With regard to Keppra, I've been on both the brand name and a generic. With both I experienced very high hostility and aggressiveness within about 2 weeks. On the brand name I was able to get off of it before any other problems came up. But on the the generic I ended up in jail.

I can't say the saving in prescription cost is worth it.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

More people are looking and hopes are we get more responces. Also looking for alternate forums etc other than epilepsy dot com to discuss generic results. Thanks

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

I am taking the generic form of Keppra XR. I have no choice, I could never afford to be on the other I have medicare Medicaid and that is how I am able to pay for my meds. I am just grateful they pay for my medication at all. It seems to be helping the seizures with not that many side effects for me. I do have some of the anger/irritability issues, but I also am on anti anxiety medication too, so that seems to help. I was just diagnosed recently. So I am incredibly grateful to have something that is stopping these awful episodes in their tracks. I was told that most if not all the side effects would get better within a month. I am hoping that will be true. But I can put up with them if the medication is helping this much. I guess everyone is different. I must be lucky.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

As for Keppra XR i can not talk yet. I have been on AED's for over 50 years. What most people dp not realize is that people have been taking generic meds for a very long time. I have taken over half of the nedications for epilepsy during my life.

I was taking Keppra and it was doing a great job at reducing the number of seizures I was having. It also reduced the length of time I was in the seizure and the focus time was also reduced. I went from partial seizures that lasted several minutes and focus time after those was 10-30 mintues to seizures lasting seconds with the focus time less than a minute. Keppra was expensive but the cost for a months supply was 985.00. I stayed on it for awhile before they came out with the generic. WHen seeing my neuro I always say one of his associates who kept telling me not to go on generics. Many doctors are that way. I discussed the isue with him and he wrote a script for generic. He also wanted to know if it would work. I started taking it and have had no problems since I went on it. My seizure count is down and I sould have a seizure while on the phone and the customers wouldn't know I hadit. Also some workers didn't know I had seizures while we were talking.

Dilantin was a very good medication and I took in for30 years. I started taking it in 1962 and it was generic then as were most medications.

Re: Keppra XR - Generic Version

I started levetiracetam er generic for keppra xr in 2011 since i have had less seizures. It doesn't have me as tired as other seizure meds. I love to fact it seems longer periods of time till i sez again. I'd say this is a great product.
