simple partial seizures and headaches?

I was diagnosed with simple partial seizures a few years ago. During the seizures I would have headaches. Since going on keppra, the seizure symptoms have gone away, but I have been suffering from chronic debilitating headaches for years! The last 2 times I have had the headaches, some of my weirder seizure symptoms presented themselves. I am beginning to think the headaches are part of the seizures and that the seizures were never fully under control, but my neuro seems to think differently. He thinks the headaches are from myofascial pain syndrome or cervical dystonia...but I think their occurrences are too coincidental to be an independent issue.

Does anyone know if migraines and/or headaches can be a part of these seizures? If so, what can I do about it. I've been on keppra 1000 mgs 2 times per day with 100 mgs of topamax, but still had the headaches. I am currently on 500 mgs keppra twice a day without the topamax.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Im on Keppra XR, 1500mgs Twice a day, total of 3000mgs a day. Ive been wondering about headaches with simple partial seizures. I just got done having a Video EEG last week, and to my suprise, I didnt have the complex partial seizures Ive had in the past. This time, i was consious through out the entire seizure, but I experienced, stomach pain, like nausus feeling before the seizure would occur, numbing and tingling in my hands and feet before it occured, along with the feeling of the auras. During the seizures, the numbing feelings would get alot worse and go from my hands and feet to my face and all over my body. I would be able to hear what everyone was saying, but my body would be jerking and stiff, to the point where I couldnt do anything about it til the seizure was over. They lasted a couple minutes.

After a few of them, I noticed my head would hurt. I didnt know if having headaches after simple partial seizures were common? I know after having complex partial seizures, I would have a headache, but my parents would give me adivan, so It would make me tired afterwords and I would sleep alot.

My dr says these seizures I had were registering on the Video EEG, but they were not epileptic seizures. Even though he can still see the areas of epilepsy on the EEG. These occured 40 hours after my last dose of medications, coming off both my medications cold turkey.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Was the headache long lasting and really painful? Mine usually last up to 24 hours or more and gradually increase until I vomit for a few hours, then they go away gradually.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

I noticed it right after the seizure was over. The nurses asked if I had any pain, and I told them in my head. They gave me tyenol for the pain, which helped, and the pain went away after a couple of hours. I dont know how long it would have lasted if I wasnt given tyenol.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Mine won't go away even if I take muscle relaxers and vicodin. I just have to wait the whole 24 hours.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Thats how my headaches would be when I had the complex partial seizures. They were so bad, that at times I had to have someone hold my head still, by putting pressure on the sides of my head because it felt like my head was going to explode!

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Well, I am going to increase my keppra dose over the next few weeks and see if that helps the headaches.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Kaeli,

Do not increase your Keppra dose without talking to your doctor. You could put yourself into toxic range. If you think you're getting headaches now, just wait until you go into toxic territory with the Keppra.

Been there, done that, it wasn't pretty. My brains felt like they were going to explode. Much worse than the worst headache or seizure aura I'd ever had. I can't even begin to describe it.

If you are having debilitating headaches, talk to your neuro. Your headaches need to be treated as much as your seizures do. Just because something doesn't show up on an EEG, doesn't mean that it isn't serious enough to warrant treatment.

If your neuro won't treat it, find another neuro. It's part of his or her job. Take good care of your self and don't f*ck with your meds.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

I spoke with my neuro about increasing my keppra dose. I will still be under the max dosage. He's tried treating the headaches as a separate issue, but I don't think they are separate from the seizures. I think they are just another unpleasant symptom of the seizures tat persist after the seizures have stopped. Pain killers, PT, natural treatments, chiropractics, muscle relazers, and botox all don't work.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Kaeli,

I'm relieved you spoke to your doctor. Good luck. The advice that Kristin offered about the Keppra XR is good. You might have a better time on that rather than a higher dose.

I couldn't get the XR because I was past the donut hole and my insurance wouldn't pay. I was forced to take half the dose of Keppra every six hours instead of every twelve hours. I didn't get a lot of sleep, but it kept my levels stable.

Make sure the doc tests your blood levels. If you start getting irritable or having other side effects, talk to your doc immediately. My headaches were much better at the Keppra every six hours, but were a disaster at a higher dose every 12.

I'm like you. Nothing works for the headaches. The only two things that ever worked were Trileptal and Keppra every six hours. That makes me think my headaches aren't migraines either.

Pay close attention to how you feel and stay in close contact with your doctor. Be well.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Check with your dr about the Keppra XR. It was a miracle drug for me that took my headaches away! Plus it turned out to be cheaper for me too.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

I realize you quit smoking, but you were aware of the risks.  My mother smoked for 15 years, quit in the '60's, and still got emphysemia!  Breathing is extremely difficult and painful.  You might consider asking God to let you stop suffering and come home.  I doubt if breathing will get easier.  Smoking at all, compounded by pollution and other air contaminants, all cause emphysemia, heart disease, cancer, etc.

Are you on the West Coast?  Japan's radiation hit us today.   Just like they don't want their people to panic, we're not being given the entire truth.  Please pray for us.  We need it.

God bless you,

T

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

T,

The levels of radiation reaching California are extremely low. Please don't worry about it. It isn't a good thing, but it isn't enough to cause injury. The emissions from car exhaust and fossil fuel burning power plants are causing far more harm.

I saw a pulmonologist since I made the video. I'm not very happy with him and I don't trust him. He said I may not have emphysema yet. He said it is hard to distinguish the beginning stages of emphysema from bad asthma/COPD. If I can't get to a clean environment, I will. My level of inflammation is extremely high and that can cause emphysema.

Yes, I knew the risks of smoking. No, I was not a heavy smoker except for one very brief period, maybe two months. For some of the time it was a pack or less a day and in the later years, half a pack or less. The pulmonologist indicated to me that I quit long enough ago that he didn't think it was a big factor. It's more likely living in a high pollution area and breathing in the aftermath of 9/11 are what got me. I will never know.

G-d will take me in His time. I have no wish to hasten my demise even though I am in great pain. I am ill for other reasons at the moment and very unhappy with my doctor. I need to doctors I can trust. That seems to be an almost impossible quest.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Remember, you'll be in my prayers.  In addition to our AEDs, that's all we can do for now.  You might not be able to find a doctor you can trust, because your case is so difficult to treat.

God Bless you,

T

T,

Thanks. You may be right about why I can't find doctors I can trust. You are in my prayers as well.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

I was on Keppra for years before I was switched over to Keppra XR. I take the same amount of Keppra xr as I did the Keppra. I had headaches alot with the Keppra. But last November, the dr I am now seeing switched me over to the Keppra XR and Ive seen a HUGE difference in headaches. My headaches were so bad before, that I was taking Advil Migraine Pills. I havnt had to take a migraine pill since November of last year now. If anything, check with your dr about the Keppra XR. The way my dr explained it to me, is that with Keprra XR, it doesnt mess with your medication levels, it stays even, instead of like Keppra that will have your level go up when you take it and then half way into taking it, before your next dose, your level starts to go down, causing headaches to occur. My dr also gave me a prescription card plan, that saves me $30 everytime I get my medication refilled. I was paying $150 for 6 months of Keppra. With Keppra XR, I can get 6 months for $100 plus save $30 so it only costs me $70 for a 6 month supply.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

Hey guys. My mom and I are new at this and need some advice. My dad had his first
seizure a year ago which lead to the discovery of a brain tumor. He has
been somewhat fine until 3 weeks ago, when his MRI showed that the
cancer was growing back. The past few days he's had a total of 9
seizures. One long one on Tuesday night, Three on Wednesday night, and
five Thursday night. His seizures tend to occur when he is sleeping,
probably in the middle of his REM cycles. I know these seizures are the
natural process of the tumor growing and his brain shifting, but I'm
just wondering if there is anything my mother and I can do. Should we
take him to the emergency room every time he has an episode?

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

If he's having seizures he needs to see a neurologist. If he is only having the simple partials, it isn't worth running to the ER. No they are not fun, but they are not something to go the the ER for. He should be on seizure medications to try to stop the seizures. The best thing to do on your part is to let him rest. Seizures wipe out your energy and I'd get mad if I had to go to the ER everytime I had a SPS, BUT I wouldn't b mad to go to a neuro cuz that is their specialty. SPS's come in clusters, and their onset is in a persons sleep, so what he is experiencing is normal. Don't worry. He's gonna be tired. Let him sleep.

Re: simple partial seizures and headaches?

I have migrane like headaches after the simple partial. The length of time they last is dependant on the severity of the seizure. I usually fall asleep and the headache is much better or gone after sleeping 2-5 hrs. I usually feel the pain over/behind one or both eyes then moving to the middle of forehead. Log this in your seizure diary to help your doctor understand. I have found doctors who believe this and ones who don't. My Dr. at Utah Epilepsy Ctr in SLC said it was "after seizure". If you can get someone to drive you I highly reccommend you go to an Epilepsy Ctr. Its the only place I wasn't treated like a crazy person seeking attention.
