you might try asking your doctor about ativan. It helps  me sleep. I only take as needed.

Good Luck

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I will be starting a new drug for dep. next week.  I can't remember the name now.  I'm waiting on insurance approval.  I think it is Lexapro.  I'm not happy about his.  I'm very frightend.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Hi cloudy,

If you are not happy and frightened about going on the new anti depressant, why are you doing it?

I am not saying do not do it. I am just hoping it is something you have thought about and are not being told to do or pressured into taking. lexapro can be difficult to withdraw from.

Lamictal works as an anti anxiety as well as an anticonvulsant.

There are many many therapies to try for depression.

Pills are definetly not the only solution, and definetly not the best or fastest or safest or longest lasting solution either.

much love,

marty

As to the weird dreams on lamictal- I am not experiencing this yet am only at 100mg. I do sometimes wake up around 4am with very profound thoughts that seem to come out of dreams though...

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Thanks for the advice on the anti depressants.  I feel pressured to take them because I feel like I’m wrecking my family’s lives.  Before I started all of the AEDs I was the guy everyone counted on to get the job done.  I had all the energy.  Almost too much...  People used to joke about me having too much energy.  Now I fight to get through the day because I’m tired from the meds.  My Neurologist sent me to a Psychiatrist he thought it wasn’t the drugs.  I still think it is.  The Psychiatrist said I should try Lexapro “I have nothing to lose”.  I don’t know.  I just need some sleep and the dreams to stop for one night………..Some of you know how it is.  It’s hard even for your own family to understand.  My wife and children have no idea what I’m going through they only know it is hard on them.  I feel terrible how it makes their life tough.  I just need to sleep…….

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I know exactly how you feel. I get the dreams too am I take Keppra xr and Vimpat for seizures and celexa for antidepressant. I did take lexapro and I loved it but my insurance wouldn't pay for it so I had to change. If you don't feel you need it say so, I know if I did't feel like I needed it I definatly wouldn't take it. As for the dreams mine are very real now also its scary sometimes. Sometimes I dream that I am having a seizure in my sleep and I am above my body waching it all happen. When I tell anyone they think I'm crazy so I don't usually tell anyone anymore.

Good luck to you

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Candysb,

Too bad so many people think your crazy; you're not.  It sounds extremely exciting to dream like that.  I'd love to hear more about your dreams.

Take care

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I've been having those kind of dream experiences since I started this whole seizure thing,...no meds.  My dr calls it derealization and seems to find it very concerning.  The color is very very vivid and I am not sure what is a dream or what is real.......... I done those drugs but the severe side effects never kept me on them more than a few days .

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

The dreams feeling real are so creepy.  Some days when I’m awake I wonder if it is real.  I’m so foggy from the meds.  I’m in the middle of a med increase and it is the first time I’m on two.  Additionally I’m adding an anti depressant.  The world is weird right now.  People pass by in the morning and I wonder if I’m dreaming.  Around 11:00am I realize I’m not.  The weird part is my dreams go like that sometimes.  My Dr. said I have to wait out the adjustment.  Some days I just don’t know…………..

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Cloudy,  Is your neurologist aware of the fact that these "dreams" are interfearing with your daily life?   Perhaps it's time to see an epileptologist.  That isn't good.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

He is an epileptologist.  This is the second Dr. I have told.  "It's just an Adjustment"

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

you can email me off my profile or I'm on facebook to. Candace Brooks I live in Bloomfield NM. The dreams freak me out sometimes I think maybe its because I realy did have a seizure at night.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you

Hi Candace,

I'll email your profile.

Take care,

P.S. Topamax is one of the most dangerous of all AED's.  Contact your doctor ASAP!

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Hi, I am new at this so stick with me. The lack of sleep not new to me, no one understands, not new to me, gotta be strong for everyone, not new to me. Bud you better lay back and think about you for a minute it sounds selfish but I learned it the hard way, thru several years of trial and effort. If you don't, I am sure you know you will make and keep yourself sick.

I take Lamictal and Topamax now and I do have some crazy dreams from time to time it took years to find a "happy sleepy time" pill that actually really gave me "happy sleepy time".

I went to see a Psychologist she told me I was not depressed I was tired needed sleep and having a hard time adjusting to life as I have to live it now. I have been thru 4 brain surgerys not due to seizures and am now retired. She said anti-depressants are not always the answer. Think about that before you make a decision.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Thanks.......I don't know what to do.  The lack of sleep is clouding my judgment.....Every night is crazy wierd dreams.   Thanks again

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

What was the "happy sleepy time" pill that worked for you?

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Talk to your Doc about Prosom after my first night taking it I wanted to run to my Doctors office and hug him and kiss him and YELL I SLEPT LAST NIGHT AND ACTUALLY RESTED. He would have laughed with me he knews what I have been thru. Don't just give in never give in or give up. Sometimes we gotta fake it to make it the more we fake it we start to believe it then we start to feel better if we sit around with the oh whoa is me's then we become oh whoa is me.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Cloudy,

One thing to remember about Adivan and drugs in that family (sorry I misspelled it) is that it can occasionally have a behavioral side effect of violent mood swings. I had this reaction and it turned me from a very calm person into the wicked witch of the west. I am not sure if it was because of the TBI I sustained and vulnerability of mood swings because of it; or if it was something else, but this is something to be considered.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

Hey Cloudy,

I'm currently taking lamictal only and have had similar issues. I even have panic attacks from time to time because I can't figure out if something was real or in a dream. I haven't discussed this with my doctor, I may make a note for my next appointment. Good luck, you are not alone.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I experienced no side effects with Lamictal, but Topamax was a horrific experience. Depression, memory loss, and a general dumbing down. I truly believe it is a horrible drug, and unless you are desperate to lose weight, I would stay away from it. I did lose my appetite and lost weight.

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I agree topamax is an awful drug. I started it a year ago and complained many times to my doctor about the side affects but she dismissed them all. I was not able to write my high school exams properly because I couldn't remember what I studied two hours later. I recently have been experiencing the dreams. One night I dreamed a called someone and talked to them, I woke up and that person had called but I never did pick up or even hear my phone because it was off. I often can't remember what is a dream or reality. I wasn't too sure if this was from the drug. But that's interesting. Good luck ! :)

Re: Crazy dreams on Lamictal and Topamax

I've taken both together, but  Topamax causes the craziness.  Look up hallucinigenic AED's.  Topamax is one of the worst.  I participated in a study before it came to market.  My  experiences were horrible.  Dreams are dreams.  That doesn't affect real life.   When it starts causing hallucinations during the day, that's a problem.  I found that I couldn't remember the  day of the week, so sometimes I took extra, others I didn't take any.

That made it a nightmare.  I had horrible itching.  The doctor kept telling me it would go away; which it didn't.  My caregiver (and best friend) found me on the couch, unresponsive to anything.  He drove me down to the doctor and brought me in for him to see.  They did a CT scan to see if I'd had a stroke.  It wasn't a stroke, just the Topamax; which I was immediately removed from.  Topamax is extremely dangerous.  I'm surprised it ever made it to market.
