Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYI'm 43, a regular cyclist and runner. Yesterday, I was taking a lunchtime ride. My buddy and I stopped by his daughter's school so he could deliver some medicine to her. He went inside, I stopped my bike. The next thing I remember is becoming alert inside the nurse's office at the school. Apparently EMS had been contacted and checked on me while I was unconscious (I have no memory of that). I gradually became aware of where I was and what date it was, etc.
My wife took me to the ER, where I received an EKG and CAT scan. Everything showed as normal, so the attending physician diagnosed it as a seizure, and referred me to a neurologist. I haven't seen the neurologist yet (hopefully next week).
Question for those of you who've been around epilepsy for a while: is it possible this is a one-time event? I've never had anything like this happen before, and I didn't see it coming.
I felt fine, and was looking forward to a nice ride. Apparently a witness told the school nurse that I slumped forward while I was standing with my feet on either side of my bicycle. Then I fell over to my left side, and was drooling. I was wearing my bike helmet, so that may have kept me from hitting my head. I can tell from soreness that I landed on my left buttock.
I guess I was out for five minutes or so. I had no idea where I was or what date it was. Weirdest feeling ever.
So, now I'm concerned about cycling and driving and a million other things I do daily. What are the chances this won't ever happen again?
Thanks~David

Hi David. There are some stats on this site somewhere that x-percent of the population has 1 seizure in their lifetime. So yes there is a chance that it won't happen again. But that doesn't mean that for sure, it will never happen again. I would say try to ride your bike with another person. Sounds like this one hit you with no previous symptoms, but try to be aware while you are riding if you feel weak, tired, whatever, and have a game plan (be ready to get off your bike and get to side of the road/sidewalk on a soft surface, if at all possible).
Try to also think back on that day - were you feeling ill or tired that day? Any big or unusual stresses happening to you, emotionally speaking? Did you get enough sleep? Did you perhaps not eat enough, and then maybe overdo the biking? Seems like a lot of people on this forum have their first seizure because didn't sleep enough plus stressed out at work/school plus a myriad of other possibilities like maybe drinking a little too much, for example. It would be good to really think back and see if you spot something that might have provoked it... And then again, it could be one of those one-off flukes that won't repeat itself. That would be the best!
Let us know what your doctor said - judging by the date of your note, you should have already seen the doctor, right?

Thanks for the response! Yes, I spoke with a neurologist about the MRI of my brain and the EEG. Everything looks good, no indication of seizures. He has referred me to a cardiologist just to rule out any heart problems.
It's most likely I simply overdid it. The weekend prior to this incident, I ran a half marathon after training for a few months. This bicycle ride was my first exercise after the race. I probably didn't replenish enough during the week. There's a condition where low levels of electrolytes will cause you to pass out. That's probably what it was.
Thanks again!

David, it could have been a "drop attack" from exhaustion, sudden change in body temperature or an imbalance of electrolites, sugar and potassium. There's an interesting thread about seizures and exercise on this site. You can find it at http://my.epilepsy.com/discussion/979431
