Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYHas anyone had a seizure during on around your period. I guess what I'm trying to say is Do you think your period has triggered a seizure of some kind before...
Everyone has something that triggers their seizures... Up untill a few years ago I've never had a grand-mal seizure and then out of the blue I have 8-9 in ONE year. Then I went all of last year with no seizure, then a week or so ago I have a grandmal and then less the a week later I have another one.
Everytime I have a seizue it seems to be right around the time I have my period.. sometimes before, something after and a few times during...
Has anyone else ever have this problem? What have you done to prevent it... I have no insurance so asking a doctor is out of the question.. .at the moment I'm applying for medical services with my local Epilepsy Association.

It took myself and my neuro a little time before, (and here's the frustrating part), that they come before, during or after my period. Just as you said. I never really tracked them but after a couple of months I realized every time I had my period I had a seizure. Then my period wasn't on schedule and I had to go on birth control. I can go 3 months w/o one and then the fourth month, seizure.
I wish you the best of luck and hope you get insurance soon.
Ever since starting my seizures when I was 12 I have graphed them and as
soon as I started menstruating I noticed the worst seizures I had were
always right before or right after menstration! In order to help myself
out I got on a birth control pill so I know when I am about to start
menstruating and when I will be done. This way I confirmed with my doctor
if it was ok to take one extra trileptol and Kepra during when it is
"that time of month." He agrees its ok to do this so why don't you try
tracking your seizures and find out if you can get on a BCP.
I've had tonic-clonic szs since I was 14, but until about 4 years ago there never was a period connection. So I can only assume now my hormone levels must be changing as I get older (I'm 40). Every single month I get a TC the night before my period starts.
I was given clobazam 10mgs to takes for 3-4 nights around that time, and if I can get the dates right it actually works. Problems is getting the dates right since I'm no longer on a 28 day cycles, and even being 1-2 days out can make taking clobazam a problem. I can't take the clobazam now for various reasons so I have to put up with a TC every month which is very frustrating.
I don't know the use of hormone treatments for catamenial seizures. Your best bet is to discuss treatment options with your neuro.
Good luck.
I also have catamenial epilepsy as diagnosed by my neuroendocrinologist. He prescribed a hefty dose of Prometrium from Day 12 of my cycle until I get my period and then a tapering period of two days into the next cycle. I tried it for a couple of months, but didn't have a lot of success. It had a lot of side effects and I was still having seizures. I suffer from simple partials and complex partials. I have nausea, dizziness and speech difficulties. I am now doing two things that seem to make a huge difference and both are over the counter/experimental - something you can try for relatively low cost that doesn't require a physician.
1. I purchased Emerita Pro-Gest creme at Super Supplements. This is also available at Vitacost.com for significantly less. I discovered if I rubbed a good dollop of it on the thin skin - shins, inside of my arms, face a couple of times a day during the rough times, I would have fewer side effects and the seizures would subside.
2. I began a ketogenic diet. The brain is fueled by glucose. In the absence of glucose (carbs) the brain will run on ketones. This has a calming effect on the brain and causes the neuron and synapses to functin differently. I actually made it through an ovulation cycle without a seizure by using diet alone. You can use a modified Atkins plan. Basically stick to 20 carbs or less a day. This has proven to work for 63% of epileptics with a 90% decrease in seizures.
I hope one or both of these work for you! Also, my neuro told me to chart my cycles. Day 1 being the first day of your period. Once I had 7-8 cycles in print, I could really see a pattern of ovulation and the couple of days before and after my period start. It really helps me plan my life and when I ramp up my efforts to thwart it.
Good Luck!
I too just notice that when it close to or on that time of the month, that I also start to feel funny. Then I also read about the Keto/Atkin. I've been on the diet for about 2 weeks now, I do feel much better and my family also notice the diffrence in the way I behave and look. So look it up. There is aweb adreess of the Keto diet and also For the Atkins(atkinsfor sezuirs.com)
Aloha
I've tracked my seizures for years. When I started tracking them, I was surprised to see that I have a lot more during the week before menstruation. It also occurred to me that my seizures began the same year that I started menstruating. I did some research and found a term for it ... "catamenial epilepsy." There is a lot of information on it on the web. As far as treating it, all of my neurologists have disregarded this aspect of my seizures (who knows, maybe this is why I'm still not seizure-free), however, some of the web sites mention using hormonal therapy along with anti-seizure meds. Estrogen and progesterone are the female sex hormones... from what I gather, right before our periods, our estrogen levels increase and progesterone levels drop. Some doctors have used progesterone to balance the hormone levels out. I suppose you might be able to get something over the counter, but I'd be really careful. Good luck, Laura!

I notice that my seizures come a lot more frequently about two weeks before my period starts. My doctors say that there is n proof that going on birth control will help control them, but mine do get a little better when I am on the pill. Still, I am no doctor; so, this is just my experience, not a medically researched answer. If you ever can get in to talk to someone it might be something to bring up.
In my case, getting off of the pill after being on it for about 26 yrs it what triggered it! When I eventually was diagnosed, the neurologist and even a later epileptologist insisted that I only needed AED's. But I still had seizures. I personally decided that it was best to go on the pill, and without advising the doctors, got a new Rx from ob/gyn. And sure enough, the tonic clonics subsided substantially - I took them in tandem with the AED's.
