TAKE CONTROL TODAYHello everyone :)
My name's Kat, i'm 24 and I've been TTC now for a few months with my. I am currently on 250mg of Lamictal BID and have been on it now for about 2 years. Since starting TTC our first child, I've become more aware of some symptoms I've been having that were so subtle I didn't think anything of it. First one is major breakouts. I've never had skin problems in the past and this just kind of snuck up on me. I began noticing it more and more, thought it was just stress, then changed makeup & face wash, and I'm starting to just think the reason these things aren't working are due to something else. I also have realized that my cycle has gotten extremely irregular and I probably have not been ovulating, explaining why the trouble with conceiving. I also noticed some other problems that I know are associated with PCOS, something I had never heard of until talking with my doctor. All of these problems have come up just in the last year or so on this medication, and as my dose slowly increased, so did my symptoms.
I'm not sure if it's directly the medication or what, I have not been on any other medications that have worked. I have absence and simple partial seizures, but I never convulse. I get an aura, and feel horrible for 30 seconds or so. Sometimes it's really bad, sometimes not. I've had them my whole life but was just diagnosed two years ago. I'd been told by everyone around me from family members to several doctors that it was just anxiety and that I had to learn to control it. It wasn't until I finally broke down and demanded something more drastic that I was put into a study with a constant EEG, and voila. They are seizures. It felt good to have a diagnosis but at the same time, it's complicating everything and has been scaring me as I venture into the journey of becoming pregnant.
Can anyone relate? Any TTC or currently pregnant women on Lamictal (or previously on Lamictal) that can share experiences? It's important to me that I figure this all out because I not only want to make sure I can get pregnant but also because of these nasty side affects that are related to PCOS (although I am not the typical patient according to my doctor.) I have developed a high LH level, which I've read can be related to the medicine.
Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Ladies!!!

I 'accidently' got pregnant when I was on Topamax and Lamictal (200mg of both 2xday). I call her my Bonus Baby!! :o)
I had no side effects like yours.... and Lilly is the 'perfect' child
I always blamed the pregnancy for my teeth 'going bad'. I could brush my teeth 5 times a day and still get cavities and they would chip and crack at the tiniest bite or jolt.
I now know that anticonvulsants have the potential to cause bone loss/ deterioration. While taking both Topamax and Lamictal this happened to me.
Take LOTS of calcium, Vitamins D and K!!!
Best of luck to you and yours!!

HI there. I was diagnosed with complex partial seizures 5 years ago. I was first put on Tegrotol for about 8months until I switched doctors and she had me switch to Lamotrigine right away because of my husband and I wanting to start a family, she also put me on 5mg of Folic acid. I was on lamotrigine for about 5-6 months before I got pregnant. I had no trouble getting pregnant or keeping the pregnancy. I had a very healthy baby boy. I did have a seizure while in labour with him but nothing to major, controlled and ended up having an epidural, which calm everything right down. After I had him I started to "not feel right" so my doc upped my meds for about 3 months, after that I was back to normal. Then when my son was 13 months old we found out we were pregnany again. Everything was pretty much text book with my pregnancy again. Had my daughter no major problems. However, with her we got the epidural before I ended up having a seizure. We knew it would be coming, so why take the chance. I did really want to try and have a natural birth but there ways just no way I could. I was monitored very closely with my daughter. I had a nurse in the room at all times.
I breastfed both of my kids. My son until he was about 10-11 months and my daughter until she was 12 months. Both kids are extremely healthy and happy. I was so worried when I was pregnant about if something was wrong with them but the chance of having an malformations is only 4-6% (I think) on lamotrigine. I was also worried about breastfeeding, wondering if my kids would be getting a lot of my meds and then go thru withdrawls. But like I said both kids are very healthy and very smart. My son knew all his letters. numbers, colors and shapes by the time he was 18 months.
It's scary thing when your pregnant under normal circumstances and when you add in the risk of our meds it makes it 100X more scary. Everything will work out!!
Good Luck!
