TAKE CONTROL TODAYHi
I am trying to find a suitable method of contraception, i am particularly interested in the implant/ implanon. There is some confusion as to whether it will work effectively whilst i am using lamotrigine as it may stop the hormone from working or something. I currently am on 100mg lamotrigine twice daily and 1500mg keppra twice daily. As far as I am aware the keppra would not be a problem.
Has anyone had any experience with lamotrigine and the implant??? Any help, advice, suggestions of other methods of contraception or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Laura

hi
its me again, the one who posted this question. just incase anyone else was wonderin about the answer i thought i'd giv an update. after speaking to the doctor she believes that the implant will be a good method of contaception for me and the effectiveness will not be affected by either of the drugs i am taking. she has emailed specialists to make sure, they have not yet replied but when they do i'll keep you updated and let you know. if all is well i'm having the implant fitted 13th april, wish me luck.
Just a quick question about the implant your getting. What type of implant are you getting, like an IUD or the hormones that go just under the skin? I have thought about an IUD quite a bit because from what my neurologist says is that hormones in B/C can greatly effect your lamotrigine and the lamotrigine and greatly effect the B/C. We had talked about me going on the B/C pill and she said that I would have to probably up my meds and also have a stronger dose of B/C and also use another barrier method. From what I understand an IUD is pretty much the way to go. My husband really wants me to get an IUD, I just can't decide if that the way I want to go. Anyone have an IUD and like it?
Hi! I'm taking Lamictal and Keppra and have had an IUD for the last three years. I love it--I don't have to worry so much about pregnancy (according to my doctor it is as effective as the b/c pill anyways) and I don't even know it's there. An added bonus is that I don't have to remember to take a b/c along with all the other meds I already take. Mine's a copper one but I know there are other types out there. Hope this helps.
The implant i was going to get was just the hormonal one that goes under the skin on your arm. Thanks for the advice, I am thinking that maybe another chat with my doctor is in order as she had not highlighted this fact to me, but who knows the specialist may yet come back and say something along the similar lines of what you have said anyway. I have also been thinking about the IUD, truly i think it would be the best idea, I just have to break through the mental barrier in my head, i hate the thought of somebody else inserting an object up my vagina and into my womb. If I could get over this thought and if it turns out that I decide against the hormonal implant then I will seriously start considering the IUD.
I agree with you about the IUD. I have a hard time putting something unnessacary in my body. However, I think it's a better option then putting more chemicals in my body. Right now my husband and I aren't really using any form of B/C. Like I said he would really like me to consider an IUD because we're not the best at using other forms of B/C. He doesn't want anymore kids, we have 2. I would like to have one more but thats a discussion for another time!! I'm supposed to be going to see my neurologist in April so I would like to go over with her our options again. Our first 2 kids were what I like to call "planned surprises". We weren't trying but we weren't "not" trying either. Luckily, we got pregnant pretty much on the first try, or not try (lol).
Sorry I couldn't be more help, looks like we're in the same boat!
