Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYMy daughter is 15 and was diagnosed with seizure disorder after experiencing absence seizures at age 7. She has had 3 tonic clonic seizures since diagnosis and is currently taking Topamax for the TC and Zeurontin for the absence seizures. She is also very sensitive to ultra violet light, which has triggered both absence, partial complex and TC seizures. For the last 2 months, she began taking low dose birth control pills to regulate her periods. Within the first couple days of each cycle, she has a partial complex seizure. Will this stop happening once her body becomes accustomed to the birth control pills? I have read quite a bit about birth control pills and seizures, and it seems like the birth control helps to eliminate seizures in some women, but makes others worse. She does not want to stop taking the BC pills because they have helped her menstrual periods, but I'm hesitant to support it if it is going to make her have PCS every month. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Birth control can makes sz worst for some women just because sometimes doctors don't understand that estrogen is a sz-promoter. If a women with catamenial epilepsy is given BC with estrogen, it's going to make matters worst. She needs to take progesterone only, or very low estrogen BC.
I was on the Nuvaring, which is mostly progesterone and low estrogen, along with 250 mg Topamax and it was the only thing that stopped my sz and it was instantaneous. They were complex partials that would start at midcycle (I had long, erratic cycles so I think timing them helped alot) and were always in clusters. By the usual guidelines, I went into status very often since these lasted a few hours. The BC made a huge impact but I had to do alot of research to get myself onto it. DepoProvera is usually the choice option, but it can lead to weight gain. However, if you don't see results, I might suggest it. The nuvaring could be an option later on. Currently, I am trying out the Mirena IUD to see if that works as effectively.
Unfort. alot of nueros and ob/gyns do not know how to deal with this. I have not met anyone who could give me an answer. Do your research and really try to understand how it works so you can prepare yourself because they won't help you. This info isn't really in one place eitheir, so this is everything I know from having travelled this road already.
Note too, that you'll never be sz-free from hormones alone. Anticonvulsants need to be part of the combo, so finding the right level is important as well. I know that during my off-week with the Nuvaring I always felt "funny" so the drugs were still keeping something at bay.
Good luck.
Hi Dianna,
My name is Christine, I am 23 and was diagonsed with seizures when I was 8 years old. I have had the same experience as your daughter. Every month when my hormones kicked in I was more then likely going to have a seizure. So my doctor and I decided to try birth control none stop. The problem was that The birth control cut my medicine (Lamictal) that I take for seizures in half. So I had to up the dosage. I got side affects which ended up making me tried. And I ended up having partial seizures anyway. Not all the time but enough to annoy me. So I stopped taking the birth control for awhile and got my medicine leveled out. Then about a year later I went back on the birth control and had a seizure right off. At that point I switched doctor and she told me how much the amount of medicine went down. So I went off the birth control for good. I have been off it for almost a year and have been seizure free. If your not already going to a doctor the specializes in women with epilesy I recommed switching. This made all the difference in my life. I hope everything works out for you and your daughter.
Christine
