Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYI was wondering if anyone else has had a baby while on Lamictal and Topamax. I have read a lot of posters have had healthy babies while on Lamictal. However, I am on both of these medications. My doctors wanted me to continue to take them because my seizures have never been controlled under Lamictal. My pregnancy was in no way expected, so I had no time to think this through either. I know that there is a small chance of side effects on both of these medications, but my doctors really have no examples of anyone on both at the same time.
So, any help/reassurance would be GREATLY appreciated. Although I go in for a very detailed ultrasound on Thursday that is supposed to detect most birth defects. That's why I am getting nervous...

I am on topamax and diazepam, I am not pregnant but want to get pregnant someday. I am on 300 mg of topamax and 5mg of diazepam. I want to have a child and read the literature that says both meds are class D pregnancy risks. then I read posts like these and remain hopeful that some people have delivered healthy children and am not sure what to think? any ideas? should I hold out hope????
Hi,
Congratulations on your pregnancy! I have a beautiful 10 year old boy who I worried the same for. He is soooo healthy. My son does not even have an allergy. I am not sure where you are but I see a wonderful Neurologist in Syracuse New York. I have been on Lamictal and Topamax for at least 13 years. I take 600 mg of Topamax and 900 mg of Lamictal a Day. On top of that I have a VNS. Vegal Nerve Stimulator, since 1998. All while I was pregnant.
Best wishes
I was on 200 mgs of both Lamictal and Topamax 2xdaily through out my whole 'unexpected' pregnancy. My doctor seemed more concerned about the effects of potential seizures on the baby than the meds.
I was terrified to go to that appointment because of the risk of potental birth defects.
My daughter turned out as perfect as perfect can be. She is 5 years old now and is still as perfect now as she was when she was born.
I didn't breastfeed though.... There is no indications that these meds will do any harm when passed through breast milk, but that does not mean that down the road some scientist in a white coat won't say, "Oops!!"
My blessings to you and yours!!
I was on Lamictal and topamax when I was pregnant. Just make sure and check your lamictal levels frequently. Mine kept going really low b/c of my hormones. The bigger the baby got the more my levels would drop.
