TAKE CONTROL TODAYHelp! My 2 1/2 year old was recently diagnosed with petit mal seizures. The doctor wants to put him on Trileptal but my husband and I are both skeptical about the medication. I have read through the side effects and I am concerned about the severity because he is so young. Has anyone ever had a child on this medication? Were the side effects bad? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

My son, just turned 5 y/o, was put on trileptal in April of this year after he began having seizures. He was having 6-8 seizures a night. He has done wonderfully on it. The only side effect was that it made him eat a lot. He's small anyway so it was no big deal. That leveled off after a couple of months and he has had no problems. I hope your son does well also!
I don't have a child taking Trileptal but I was on the medication myself for two years. Once I went through the process of changing medications to the Trileptal from another medication, I didn't have any problems with it. Out of the three seizure medication I have taken in the last six years, the Trileptal was the best. I didn't have problems with the level of medication in my bloodstream like I have with the other two. There weren't any breakthrough seizures and I never had problems with side effects. I took the medication when I was 22 so I don't know how it would affect a 2 1/2 year old but that's been the best medication for me so far personally.
My son was diagnosed in June of 2008 with epilepsy and is also on the trileptal and he is supposed to take 3mls 2x a day. He was experiencing some problems with his vision and also could barley stand. When I told our neuro doc about it they said it was normal and the side effects would pass and told me to try giving it to him with food. But they didn’t and after a month of this I contacted the his pediatrician and asked him, he told me that he shouldn’t have that many side effects and he decreased the dosage to 3 ml 1x a day and since then he has been wonderful. I would recommend if the neuro doc if he is not listening, either find a new doc or just let the ped doc know that he is having these problems. I had to switch neuro docs 3 times and still don’t go see the doc as much. We prefer to see his ped doc instead because he listens. Sometimes you really got to put your foot down with these docs when they don’t listen because some docs just look at it like a paycheck or a money now.
