Seizures and hormones

I am 35 years old and I have petite seizures right before and during my period. This started in high school but recently it seems like it is becoming worse and more often. I've read about people taking birth control pills or taking other meds 14 days out of the month to control the seizures. I'm just wondering if anyone else experiences this same type of seizure. Also, I want to know what has worked or not worked for you. I have an appointment with a new neurologist on the 11th and I really want it to be productive. Thanks!

You've probably have already gone but wanted to let you know I'm on the Nuvaring and it's helped me so much. I had really severe complex partials and absence sz leading up to my period. I was sz-free for six months and had only one or two small breakthroughs lately. I too started having my sz when I got off birth control the first time. I would really recommend it, although you still need to take some sort of AE along with it, like I take 250 mg of Topamax.

Best of luck. Hope you already found a solution!

My neurologist said part of the reason I started having tonic clonics at age 41 was because I stopped taking the b.c. pill after so many years - he called them catamenial (sp?) seizures.  Plus he had some other theories. Without telling him, I got back on the b.c. pill, and haven't had another tonic clonic since.  I have had some close calls, but nothing full-blown.  And definitely no more t.c.'s in my sleep like I used to have.  So I think having your hormones regulated like that may help, it did in my case!

Best of luck with your new neuro, I hope it goes well.

I also have my Tonic clonic seizures in line with my hormones.  I have been unable to find a solution to this and none of the medications I have taken so far have helped epilm, Topomax, Lamactil,  I've had an IUD in as well so that I had little artificial hormones going into my system.

I have asked my Dr about Hormone theropy he is a proffesor in his field and dosn't belive it will help.

But I'm sure I'd give anything ago to stop the seizures.

Good luck

You know, all of these drugs do major things to your hormones (making bc less effective)...so I feel like if we're having sz's b.c. of them it may be making things worse in the long run, if it is exacerbating the underlying condition.

When I first started taking these drugs I felt better at first, but then suddenly a lot worse, just overall, like mental health and everything. When I took lamictal it also made periods way worse for me, and I never had a problem with that before. If you had an IUD but were taking the drugs they may have reduced the hormone impact of the IUD. So more and more I think maybe seizures were from a hormone imbalance overall, and the drugs exacerbated the problem, since they do strange things to estrogen.

The two tonic clonics I had (that I remember having), were both around the begining of the month around the time I got my period. The other ones I never paid attention to when.  I just recently decided to try taking b.c. to see if it helps, it can't hurt, and no matter what the side effects are it is less painful to try then another seizure drug.

Of course not everyone has hormone-caused seizures, but it seems like some people definitey do.
