Hi all- I also posted this in the welcome area....
My son has been sick for 2 weeks. At first it seemed like just the flu.virus--fever, weakness, stuffiness. He got better, and then several days later came down again with a sore throat. He kept complaining for days about the throat. On the day in question, I urged him to please get in the car for school, because he had already missed too many days, and he couldnt stay home just for a sore throat, and I had given him an advil. He just kept STARING at me. I asked him, "What is wrong? Just your throat? Is it your head? Do you have a headache?? Do you feel weak?" He couldnt really explain. I told him he must go to school--because he'd missed about 6 or 7 days already this year. He said weakly, "I can't."
I said, "What do you mean, you can't? You can't go to school? Why?"
"I just can't."
"Why are you saying you can't? Is it because you're sick? Do you feel feverish?"
"I don't know."
"Well, tell me what is wrong......."
And he stood there in the same spot for 10 minutes, and just kept saying....."But I can't."
Later he told me that he had been confused. He wanted to talk to me and explain but it was hard to. He also had what he calls "A white out" where everything in his vision faded white, for about 2 seconds. He complained of a headache, and he was irritable and didnt want to talk.
I took him to the Dr and she diagnosed strep throat, and gave him antibiotics. She also said to see a neurologist. He has continued to feel weak, irritable and complaining of eye pain and headache. When we ask him to describe the headache, he describes it as more of a feeling inside his head....that he finds it hard to recall information, and he is sometimes confused, and doesnt want to think or talk.
Yesterday he had another "white out" and generally felt horrible (and weak) and the Dr sent him to the ER room. They said his strep was better, but that he might be "seizing" or have PANDAS. He also told me that over the past few days, he's had the white out several times, and/or had several short periods of "mental confusion." He said his legs feel heavy too, and he is "fatigued".
I am totally confused. Does this sound like epilepsy to you?

Quick note about me. I have been having seizures since I was 21yrs old am 35 now. I was miss diagnosed for 3yrs telling me that what I called "dizzy spells" were migraines or panic attacks. At 24 I felt a dizzy spell happening and sometime I would vomit during the event. This time though I had a grand mal seizure and have been in and out of doctors and hospitals getting tests ever since. I also had brain surgery in 2004. That worked but only for a short time.
About your son. Look up a good epilepsy doctor. Take him immediatly. He is having all the same feelings that I get when I have seizures. I dont know what is going on around me. If I am talking I will just forget what I was talking about. I dont remember what I was doing when I was having them after. I have been told that if someone is talking to me and I have one I will tell them to "Hold on.". That is probably because of the sound bothering me. Sometimes they feel dejavue like. I get asked by doctors to explain how I feel when it is happening and I really cant. It is hard to describe the feeling i get. It is like Im there but not there. Just watching what is happening to me like a outside viewer. Hope that made since. I also get really bad headaches before and after the seizures. They make me really tired also. It sounds like your son is having Absence Seizures (Petit Mal). Look up all the seizures on this site and then go from there note down the ones that seem similar to what is going on with him. Also keep track of all these feelings he is having on a calendar and take that with him to doctor appointment. Go well informed to see the doctor so he will have the information for them. Also he should not drive.
I hope I have helped. I have been researching epilepsy for 5 years now to figure out why and where they come from for me and how I can stop them.
Thank you for the info. Petit Mal? Hmm. I will look that up. Its odd because he claims he has a headache, but when we ask him to describe the headache he will say, "Well its not actually a headache, its more like.....its hard to describle. Its a feeling of not wanting to talk or think or explain and I loose my train of thought." But then later he will say it IS a headache. Last night he was complaining of a headache inside the head, as opposed to the temples.
He is also complaining of pressure/pain in the eyes and says his legs feel heavy. But yesterday, from what we can tell, he seemed ok, at least as far as having an episode.
Is it normal to just feel achy, and out of it? Is that something that happens as a result of the seizure....or after? Also, could he be having seizures and not know it?
