Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYSo, I am mostly a lurker on here, but I am wondering if anyone else has pursued unconventional treatments for depression. I was only diagnosed with epilepsy at 28, after experiencing two grand mal seizures within a few months of each other (although, after I had them, I realized I have experienced auras for my whole life, once I consulted my neurologist). Currently, I take 100 mg of Topamax twice a day, and my seizures have been well-controlled.
For most of my life, I have also suffered from depression. Right now, it is very, very severe. I experienced both my grand mal seizures while I was taking Wellbutrin, which was, unfortunately, the first antidepressant that ever had an effect on me. I have also tried: Buspar, Prozac, Luvox, Effexor, Zoloft, Celexa and Paxil. None of these did anything. They were like drinking water.
I'm suffering a great deal, and my psychiatrist asked me if I would ever consider trying Ritalin or Adderall for depression, even though he acknowledged that they are not primarly for depression. I have not spoken to my neurologist yet, but I would definitely have both doctors speak to each other before I tried it. I thought I might ask if anyone had been on them with epilepsy. The other component to the problem is that, while I don't mind the Topamax, and my neurologist feels it is important to stay on something (I HATED Keppra), I do think it interferes somewhat with my cognition, and wonder if adding one of the other drugs might help my focus at work, which is very stressful. But I just don't know.

Hey there Zeusjuice,
I'm not sure there would be any drug interactions with the meds that you're on already. I'm currently on as far as my AED's , I take Keppra , Trileptal and Vimpat to treat my seizures, medications can be depressing along some of the effects you get from epilepsy. Postical issues that I get for quite some time after seizures themselves and . . . well you know what I mean. I've been taking Lexapro for my anti-depressant and was going to add Abilify, which is add-on adjunctive therapeutical for Lexapro, but Abilify made me vomit. So my neurologist has got me on now ,you might ask about it seems to be helping now. I've been taking for what will be 3 weeks, is Seroquel an anti-psychotic (mood stabilizer). I need the Seroquel for anxiety, hostillity and aggitation ,which are some side-effects from my AED's. I'll tell you what though, all the way around I am a much happier person and it took away those side-effects too. After doing the research on Seroquel it has a low chance of causing a seizure. So ask your Dr. about the Lexapro or Abilify if it can be added on to other anti-depressants. Maybe even check out the Seroquel if side-effects are a problem for you, it is a drug that is used for Bi-Polar and Manic-Depression, but don't let that bother you. Like you . . .it was a long discussion between my Neurologist and my Neuro-Psychiatrist to perscribe the Seroquel to me.
Best of luck , I know it seems a little out there as a medication regimen. just throwing you some ideas.
Happy Halloween , Johnny
