Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYHi,
My son has had 3 unexpected seizures in 1 year. They've done many tests and after the second seizure, was given a clean bill of health. The doctor stated that it was unexplainable and that it could be from his brain changing from growing. The doctor ruled out photosensitivity.
One night, three months after his last seizure he had another seizure unexpectedly from just watching a video about paintball contest and was taken to the hospital.
The doctor has now prescribed him Levetiracetam 500. Twice a day for the next two years to see if it will help and slowly take him off during the two year period. He is also going to test him playing the video game he was playing when he had his second seizure to make sure he can rule out PSE.
If anyone has a similar case, please contact me through here and help me by giving me some advice, tips, suggestions regarding my situation.
Has anyone ever taken this medicine or the kids taken this medicine and give me information since I've never hear of this drug before and I'm just trying to inform myself before giving it to my son.
My son has never had this before and it has affected my greatly. I just want some peace of mind and be prepared to take this on properly.

Were they full-on seizures? Grand mal? Are you seeing a pediatric neurologist? Have you had an EEG and MRI? Our neuro told us that about 70% of epilepsy patients do not get a diagnosis that tells why the seizures ever happend.
The meds you are talking about is Keppra. My son was on that for about 6 months, but it ended up being the wrong type of med for his type of seizure. Some side effects we experienced: increased hyperactivity and aggression. One good thing about Keppra is that the med is not filtered through the liver and is relatively safe. I think behavioral issues are more of a concern. Also, Keppra covers a broad spectrum of seizure types.
Our 11 y/o son had his first seizure on Dec. 28, 2008. It was a grand mal and lasted about 3 minutes. We went to the ER and had an EEG and MRI done a few days later. His EEG came back abnormal but his MRI came back clean. He went about 5 months witout having another one and on May 20 had another one and then had about 1-2 per week after that until Sept. 16. Over time, the seizures bacme longer and more aggressive. We were scheduled to see the Ped. Neuro for an EEG at AR Children's Hospital on May 28th and he had a seizure in the hall way before we could get to the clinic. Upon disharge from our overnight stay, he was prebscribed 500mg Keppra and that was increased to 1250 mg 2x daily (the max for his weight), plus Topamax. We finally got a video EEG and finally found out where his seizures were coming from and now he is Depakote and Topamax.
Keppra is a good med as long as it is for his type of seizure. PLease be sure to firm with your doc. Demand good treatment. Also, it's very helpful to keep an accurate and descriptive log of his seizures. The doc really appreciate this. I found a table in Microsoft Works. I charted the date, length, recovery time, any med changes, and a detailed description of each seizure.
Good luck with your son. I pray that Keppra helps and you won't have to go through what we have.
Thank you very much for responding to my post regarding my child. He's been on Keppra for almost a week and so far he's been fine with no noticable side-effects. Before the med, he's already had two MRIs & one EEG...which came back normal.
He is under the care of his pediatrician and the head neurologist of Miami Children's Hospital. He will be having two more tests in the next few weeks. I guess they will be to determinate the type of seizures that he is having. We do not know yet exactly what type it is, but we know that they have not been frequent nor severe. The length of them...I'm not sure...may have been between 3-5 min. The neuro told us that these types of seizures are related to the changes in his growing body and will most likely subside with time. But, he mentioned that he has to be monitored and been seen every three months.
I hope that your child is doing well. Thank you again so much for replying.
God bless.
