New - Lamictal
Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYStrange question but how do you know you gained weight BECAUSE of a med?
Do you gain a few lbs quickly and then stop or is it consistent weight gain over time until you change your meds?

Every anti-seizure medication I've taken has had weight gain as a side effect. And predictably, none of the neurologists I've used have even mentioned the possibility of this. About the quickest way of learning such "pro's and con's" is to enter the drug's name on your computer, have it bring up the data on it, read it carefully, and make some decisions after consulting with your doctor. Definitely do not discontinue taking your pills. I did once and will never forget how it landed me in a hospital. My current pills are Keppra and Depakote (both in the only affordable form--generic). Yes, Keppra has caused my weight to rise. But then, I "fight it" by eating lower calorie foods.
Thank you very much for your comment. I'm new here and I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who has experienced weight gain due to Keppra. It has also never been given as a side-effect by my doctors, but I'm beginning to realize that everyone gains weight. Pleasure to meet you and thank you.
My weight increased about 10% in a matter of a few months three years ago after I started Lamictal. I'm in my mid-20s and I assumed that, while undesirable, the gain probably was just a change in metabolism. (The gain was delayed a few months, I'm assuming because the summer I started I was working two jobs, 70 hours/week, riding my bike to and from work, and one of the jobs was very much physical labor.) I didn't think much of it at the time, and my weight stabilized fairly quickly. After graduation last spring I started working full time and ultimately settled into the most sedentary life I've ever had. Within a year of pretty much just sitting around all day, with minimal stress and less-than-great diet, I had gained maybe a few pounds. Then this summer I almost doubled my Lamictal dosage and saw the weight increasing about a month later. Added Trileptal about a month and a half ago as well. In the last two months I've gained nearly 20 pounds. I've gone back to school in a grad program and I have much more physical activity and more stress. Given the timing relative to the medication increase (you don't just gain 20 pounds in two months under normal circumstances) for both periods, and the stability in between, I believe it's the medication. I talked to my neurologist yesterday and he thinks otherwise. But as we all know, neurologists don't know everything. Oh well. I guess I'll just see what I can do to maintain my weight on my own.
i'[m not on lamictal i'm on Depakine.... but it's a medicine that provoke wieght gaining.... actually i tried to make diet but my apatite increasd and since i've started my med i gained 11kg"5 years ago" and its killing me i hate the way i look......... do you know this feeling ..my weight is 64 and i'm only 158m heigh so ... i guess that what meds do
though Trileptal helps reduce the frequency of partial epileptic seizures, a form of
epilepsy in which neural disturbances are limited to a specific region of the
brain and the victim remains conscious throughout the attack. Trileptal may be
prescribed by itself to treat the problem in adults. It can also be used in
combination with other seizure medications in adults and in children as young as
four years old. but its side effects can not be anticipated too clearly.

hi,
usually it is present until you change your diet to adjust to the medication, then once your body adjusts to the medication you may be able to go back to your previous level. proper diet, and exercise are the best methods to control weight. yes i had to make the changes and the drug was lamictal. hope it helps. rikk
aahh, got it. So, no more eating.
Actually, I am pretty active and I watch my diet, which is why this is strange.
But, then again, it can always be worse.
Thanks for the feedback!
i took depakote for years, and that drug does have that little weight gain problem. i gained almost a hundred lbs. while on that drug. i know i was constantly eating cause i always felt hungry. didnt matter what the food was as long as i was eating.
i saw weight gain as a listed side effect of that drug. and i had a fit cause i had to try it. so i thought to myself, ok i just wont gain the weight. ill make sure to eat right. funny thou cause once i started taking it, all that "ill control my weight" thoughts went right out the window. i was lovin on the food too much. it just hits that part of the brain that makes you think your hungry, so you just eat, even thou your prob not really hungry and your body doesnt need to actually have that food, you just think you do. after some years of me trying to fight it and not succeeding, i just joined weight watchers online and i lost all the weight.
good luck
