Hi,CHANGING MEDICATIONS FOLLOWING DETERIORATION OF SEIZURE CONTROL SINCE CHILDBIRTH

Hi, All,

I am new to this and new in here so if I get this wrong in any way please excuse me.

I have suffered from nocturnal epilepsy for 38 years which has always been controlled so that if I had any at all my fits only occured overnight whilst asleep.

I have had two children in the last three years and since falling pregnant with my first child I have experienced a deterioration of my seizure control. This was expected and no great surprise in the first instance, however I was told it would probably right itself once things settled down after the birth. It pretty much did and I was just thinking things were returning to normal when I fell pregnant with my youngest.  Following him though it has become apparent that apart from always feeling I should go to sleep around 2/3 pm, my fits are nowhere near as well controlled. Prevoiusly, I had the odd daytime seizure if I forgot medication or other factors eg antibiotics etc interfered with it. Now I am having episodes where I have numerous seizures of different types during a 12-24 hr spell and then feel awful for the next 5 days.

We discussed changing meds with the doctors and agreed that I'd try Lamictal, we commenced that and I found that I generally had a shorter fuse than normal  (not helpful with two young children)and was becoming more agressive (nearly lynched some ignorant woman on a train who pushed past me and my daughter crashing my little girls head into the train wall) not good!! However worse was yet to come  on increasing one of the doses of Lamictal as instructed to facilitate the swapover to the new drugs.  I did as instructed which dropped completely one dose of carbamazepine out of my system and bang the next day I went to work started having fits there and had 12 within 12hours. I was off work for the rest of the week.   Following this I saw the doctors again told them that i'd backtracked the change in meds to stabilise me and was no longer happy to continue on lamictal. It was the decided that I try Keppra, following reading things in here Im not happy to do that either.  However I am still unstable and I've now had two of these major episodes of fits in 4 wks it may or may not be triggered to some degree by my periods but the question still remains...

Has anyone else had similar experiences following starting a family, if so have you got it sorted now and if you have what medication are you on?

I have got another doctors appointment in 4 wks and I'm now determined that life improves from this position but I really need lots of information regarding what drugs there are, what they are good for and what has worked in similar situations, I am determined to walk in to that appointment feeling more informed and more in control of my life than they are. I would really like to be telling him what I would like to try next not have him tell me everything.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading this and supplying any responses.
