Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYi was diagnosed with JME when i was 12. i have been seizure free for 4 years now, and we are ready to start making babies! i'm on zonegran (which i've had great success with and very little side effects), but can' t decide whether to stay on the meds during pregnancy/ breast feeding or not. there are risks (obviously having seizures) if i were to get off the medication, but there are also risks to staying on the medication. i don't know what to do! my dr hasn't given me a very direct answer and we're struggling big time with this decision. any advise would be appreciated!!

Name: Women and epilepsy
Since: Apr 10, 2008
About the Group:
Women can deal with epilepsy in a different aspect than men. When it comes to the start of puberty to when menopase occurs. There are a numerous amount of effects that women can have due to hormones and becaus of childbearing. Due to this I wanted to start a group to talk and get to know other people with the same seizure and if when it comes to certian subjects you can get a second opinion. Overall one will be able to converse and find out information that can help medically and socially.

Im 32 weeks prego on zonegran 300 mg a day and all looks ok by now. No problems with baby( usg and tests are coming back negative) or with me. I was 2 years without seazures before we concive and I had also problem stay on meds or quit. But then I reminded myself what if I drive and have a episode or fell down the stairs..... What about oxygen for a baby when I dont breathe?Whithout meds it is going to happen. Meds keep me seizure free. So there is no choice really. It is sad but it is our life.We have more chances for healhy baby on meds then without them. And my neuro told me that with low dosage, long period without seazure, folic acid before conception and while prego ( I take 5 mg)I shoud not worry to much. He also told me that he had few healthy babys on zonegran. So Im 32 weeks now and cant wait. And Im goin to breastfeed. Baby knows meds now, so benefits are still greater then risks like my neuro told me. I should not breastfeed only 2 h after I took meds when concentration in blood and millk is bigest. I dont mind. My hubby can take over and I can sleep:))))
I have also 4 years old boy which I had on lamictal. But lamictal stopped working for me so I had to switch to zonegran. I recomend lamictal to every women whch would like to have a baby. I had no problems and my boy is perfect.
Dear Kathrina1,
We are looking for patients taking the antiepileptic drug ZONEGRAN® (zonisamide) to participate in assessing the ZONEGRAN drug safety program. Eligible patients or their caregivers will complete a 15-minute internet or telephone survey and will be paid $50 for completing the survey. Patients and caregivers may only take the survey once. For more information and to see if you are eligible to participate, please contact BioTrak at 866-866-5856 or smoss@biotrak.com.

I have had seizures for over 25 years and since then I have had my babies and breastfeed both of them. I was put on Tegretol XR at the time they said that was the safest for me & baby at the time.
I would talk to your Neurologist regarding this issue, and see what he wants to do and if he still avoids your question, Be addmitt about it..Tell him you want the safest drugs for you & your Baby..Whatever it is.!
Good Luck & Congratulation!
I had also been seizure free for years when we decided to try for a baby. My local Charlotte neuro recmommended that I stay on the meds but I went to Duke for a second opinion. The head Epileptologist there agree that the risks from a seizure are much worse for the baby. He told me the placenta can detach from the uterus during a seizure.
I am on Lamictal only and it appears to be the eplilepsy pregnancy wonder drug. I participated in the AED registry our of Mass General Hosp.(harvard) and I hope you will too. I get their newsletter and their research on Lamictal just keeps getting better and better news about pregnancies.
I had my dose monitored and increased and baby and I grew so I would keep getting as much as I needed. I also nursed. I have a healthy and perfect little 16 mo old girl here sleeping soundly :) Please let me know if other questions.
Hi everyone, I'm new here but I do have some insight on your questions.
I have had 2 very healthy pregnancies while on Lamotrigine. When I was first diagnosed I was put on tegrotol. I was on that for about 7 months when I switched neurologists. I was then put on Lamotrigine because my doc new my husband and I wanted to have kids. My doc told me that Lamotrigine/lamictal was the safest AED to be on while pregnant. The chance of a major malformation is 4-6% where in a "normal" persons (meaning someone not on any meds) is 2-3%. I felt pretty good about 4-6%! There is a higher chance for cleft palate but personally I would take that over a major malformation anyday. I was also on 5 mg of Folic acid. My doc said that I had to be on it at least 3 months before becoming pregnant for it to really work in my system. I was lucky because I never had to up my meds while pregnant either, just after.
I also breastfed both of my kids up until they were 12 months. My doc also told me that the benefits out way the risks. I was VERY worried but my kids are very smart....I know every mom says that but my son knew all his letters, numbers, colors and shapes by the time he was 18 months and he how to spell his name before he was 2! I worked with him because according to one study kids born while their moms were on AED's have a higher chance of having some learning disabilities. Not sure how true it is but I'm not going to take my chances. My daughter just turned one and we have started working with her too.
I hope some of this helps at least some what. I was terribfied when I found out we were pregnant......it didn't get any better with the second. But once you see the prefect little one for the first time every fear is forgotten!!!
Mindy
I have not been pregnant yet but on zonegrane My doctor always says talked to him when I want kids. Mainly when I was on lamicatal. I would say if your doctor won't say anything on the medication do research as well as call pharmist on it. I am on zonegran it does not seem to stronge to me. I know everyone wants to take all precautions.
hey there meredith were in the same situation here lol. What i did is ask my doc directly. Because im not on same meds as you i dont know what your doc will say but i was happy to find out with me being on keppra there is a chance of having some minor birthdefects that would not hurt the baby. He also told me that it was unlikely for me give this to the baby. Dont give up on your dreams of becoming mom just ask your doc what your options are.
