Blood Inside your ears during post surgery recovery period?

I Had surgery done to my Left  tempral lobe this passed November 4th 2008.  It is now December 13 2008 making it 6 weeks since. All of the pain from where they cut into my brain and skull as well as the pain on the left side of my jaw line is over, but last week I had a huge pain and clotage inside my left ear to where I can hardly hear out of it. I went to see my reg. doc. to have him check it out and he could def. See a huge clot o blood inside my canal. He has put me on dome dropes to soften and lossen the clot to use 4x a day as well as a nasal spray to help get rid of the clot from the other side. I want to know if anybody else has had this problem and how long it took to  go away. I saw my reg. nero. that Thursday for the 1st time since the surgery for my reg. check up and told him about it. The outside pain is not as bad as it was that Monday, but I had him take a look at it was well. Him and his attending both told me that that can happen due to the simple fact that my ear is just underneath where the cut open my skull and just told me if I notice any swelling or strange feelings to call the Neurosurgeon immediatly.  I just want to know if anybody who has had this done had that same problem and how long it took for the blokage go away. Thanks!

I really like your blog the way you put up the things…I’ve read the topic with great interest.

Thanks! It was scary at first, but once I was given the drops and it finally drained out I was fine. As for the surgery it was extremly successful! Its been a year since my last seizure and next month will make a year since my surgery. As a resulty of this success my reg. neurologist has decided to reduce my meds. Last year i was taking 300mg of Phenytoin and now I am taking 100mg every other day. As for my Lamictal and my Keppra they will remain the same for a while just to be on the safe side.

I have had surgery on my right side recently and the recovery has been going well although at times i have woken up with a feeling of numbness or soreness around the area of my right ear. I have put this down to me sleeping on my right side so putting all the weight of my head on the right side. Im 6 weeks post op.

Does anyone think this is anything to worry about it or just something that will calm down. The pain doesnt last long once i move around to other side.

Thanks

Hi cass30. I was just reading about your soreness where your operation was done. I feel that it is just like any type of surgery or operation that you have done can cause the area to be sore. The left side of my head where my srgery was done was sore for a few weeks. I did take some Tylenol to hep it out.

My right temporal loboctomy was performed in 2001.    Give it time to HEAL.   You had major surgery.  I had to learn to sleep on my left side.  To date I still exper. some discomfort when sleeping on my right side for any prolonged period of time.

A small price to pay when reaping the benefits of being seizure free !  I can live with that.

Yeah fair enough thanks for that - have you also experienced long term healing for the jaw muscle on the right side that they have to dislodge during surgery. After 6 weeks i still have trouble stretching the right side of my mouth - is there any psyhiotherapy or exercise you can do to improve the healing or just like above be patient and give it time to heal.

Actually,, I have experienced the opposite.  To explain,,, I damaged the cartlige in my jaw due to one episode with seizures.   I've had electro accupuncture without success.   My jaws locked often & clunked when I chewed.   However,,,,, since the loboctomy I've not had any problems with my jaw.   I beleive the Neuro. surgeon re-aligned my jaw (unintentionally).    However,,, may I share some physiotherapy I had to do prior to the R.T..   This involves using a pencil & a mirror.

Looking into a mirror Open your mouth.  Place your fingers on the joint of your jaw-bone,   While applying pressure close your mouth slowly, concentrating on keeping your jaws aligned whereby, closing straight.

Open & repeat procedure but this time bite down on the pencil.   Keep the pencil to the front of your teeth.  Keep the pencil & your jaw in this position for about 15 mins..

I was told this helped align the jaw.   As mentioned earlier,, it never helped in my situation but,,,, you might want to give it a try.

Tho't for the Day.    "Worry is like a Rocking Chair.  It requires 'energy' & gets you nowhere".

Hi Deannie.  I know how you feel about your jaw being sore after a eizure. I used to chew and bite my lips as well. As for my jaw feeling like it was hard to open. I was told that that was nornal after surgery and it would last ony a few days. Mine came back ro normal within a week after my surgery.

You got some excellent sugggestions.  I have had 2 surgeries on the left side temporal lobe area.  THe first was like yours.  I had an anterior temporal lobectomy and I healed  and then one day I had dried blood fall out of my left ear and then blood drain out and it scared me to death.  I called the neurosurgeon's office and  he looked inside and they did a CT and said everything is fine. THis was in the in 70's before MRI's were popular.  He refered me to an ENT.  I was fine.  It probably was a clot.  The 2nd surgery was a hippocampectomy and I did not have any problem.

I had problems with "fluid" on the ear after the right temporal loboctomy.  The Surgeon explained they use an Iodine Prep. to sterilize the area when performing surgery.  The Iodine Prep is a reddish brown colour.  Obviously,, when washing the area for surgery with the iodine prep. some ran down into my ear canal.    Hence,,, the sound of 'water in my ear'.  It was most annoying.

A simple solution to remedy the problem.  The Surgeon suggested I get an ear syringe & remove the fluid.   I followed his instructions & no problem since.

Thanks for the advice! I did have my regular doc. take a look at my ear when i noticed the problem and he put me on some drops. # days later when i saw my regular neuro for an annual check up I had him take a look at my ear and it was finally draining. Thanks!

one thing.  it is not unusal for someone with a skull fracture to have blood behind the ear drum.  it call also be in the canal if the ear drum is broken.  rikk

i have not had the problem.  if you are sure about the neuro then stick with the advice.  if your gut is telling you something else.  have the neurosurgeon, check it.  they may have a more specific answer for your questions.  hope it helps.  happy holidays.  rikk
