Can exercise induce seizures?

Sun, 11/16/2008 - 07:00
All the doctors disagree with me because of the research out there but I gave up running last June because I had a seizure while running. I suddenly collapsed, right before I was going to cross a busy street. The doctors argue that aerobic exercise is especially good for epileptics because it normally relieves stress and depression. I agree with this but I want to be safe when getting back into it again. Once I had a small seizure on a bicycle as well. What does everyone else think? Have you had similar experiences?

  Hi.

Surprised I have not seen this.

a lot of the doctors say no .

I think it is the  "over heating" that leads to this.

Why not? we know that fever is a major problem for seizure disorders of all kinds.

I am a very high strung person and spent years having pretty continous gmals weekly

In hind sight I know quite a bit (of course) The tired, the weak, under fed, over worked, side of me always had a gmal sz.  kind of duh .

But I also know for sure the Hot over heated side of me always had a seizure too.

I looked back at the ambualnce rides I took (over 100) and they increased in summer and were less in winter.

I never slowed down just was in a cooler place when I was doing it.

I can also say after more than 10 yrs of doing this my body changed and no doubt became and is weaker and I have "known" triggers now  and at the top of the list is heat  and If  I have a fever I have a seizure ,if I spend a day outside when it is 100 degrees I have many seizures .

So will the bike ride be a trigger  I have little doubt no matter if it is in july or january as long as I raise my core temp. to that thresh hold level(trigger) I will have massive gmals .

Some one else saw this and responded to it "before" I was even capable of admitting it. I,m only 46 and by most standards a tough guy but was granted ssdi in less than 90 days

I did not even apply for this I was directed there by others  .

The exercise helps the body but there are limits R.C.

I have to agree.

I had a job as a dancer. Say what you will, i dont care, it paid my bills and it was very fun, but a very stressful environ. i would have sz at work, and after work. once on my way home in my car. its a high stress environment because its high competition and you have to make sales, and act happy and bubbly no matter how miserable you feel inside. i did not consume alchohol because i like to stay sober. anyway, after getting off stage, which was about 12 minutes of dancing,  i went to the private dressing room immediately because i felt an aura comming on and then i was lucky enough to make it to the bathroom, where i fell passed out and cracked my head on the tiles in the bathroom. i just wanted a place to hide, you know. they called the ambulance and it was a very embarassing scene. so much for keeping my secret. well anyway, i researched it and YES in some people who are sensitive to physical exertion and/or anxiety, sz can be provoked. i since take my meds but i know that all the times i had it after work and at work was from the high level of physical activity. i dont dance anymore and after  i got on my meds my life got under control. when i was younger my sz's did not happen in this way, i would be in school at my desk or at home, and get the simple partials with the auras, but as i grew and changed so did my pattern of sz. i would have to say that now the only thing that would make me sz again would be alchohol, or staying up for 2 days in a row, and those are things that im not about to do.

Do some research and get a second opinion. its a good idea to know what your triggers are. for me,knowing the trigger is the key to staying safe.  maybe a less stressful workout or in smaller portions with rest in between would allow you to get fitness without being over exterted.  thers always a solution.

I had to sell my much loved tredmill as it was a was inducing seizures in me regularly.  However I could never figure out wether it was the exercize or the lights on the treadmill or mabey the repetative sound, I tried covering all the lights with a towel but was still having them.  Go figure

I also play a full 90 miniuts of soccer a week as a middfeilder ( plenty of running)  and have never had a problem.

So it still remains a mistery for me
