Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYI recently switched from Dilantin to Lamictal ONLY. I'm looking for anybody who has full blown tonic clonic seizures (preferably at night) and is ONLY taking lamictal. I cannot seem to find information that states that Lamictal works for Secondarily Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizure disorders. Although I do have dizzy spells and a nervous feeling from time to time, I have only have full-blown seizures during sleep and I've NEVER had a seizure while taking medication. In other words, my tonic clonics are very well controlled.
So, I have NEVER had a seizure on Dilantin and at this point I haven't had a seizure with Lamictal.
If you are ONLY taking Lamictal, please share your experience with it!
Thanks!
Andy

Lamicatal didn't work for me :(
Now on Zonegran / Trileptal.
I take Lamictal (1000mg) by itself. I take other meds but not for seizures. My seizures do not occur at night, as far as I know. I've been taking it for quite some time. I have had breaktrough seizures while on it. I have to take high dosages of any med though. My body simply metabolizes the meds to quick and they are filtered before they get in my system.
I never had a seizure on dilantin but I quit taking it within a year of starting because of the side effects. Lamictal is a great drug in that there are no severe side effects. I've never felt "drugged". The higher dosage does seem to come with some nightmares and the occasional morning sickness. If I wasn't a guy, I'd swear I was pregnant sometimes. If the Lamictal seems to be working alone, I would stick with it. Even though I still have the occasional seizure, I am happy with the results.
A lot of doctors don't full explain Lamictal levels. The efficacy levels are from 4 to 22. You really want to be above 10 or so. The original dr. that put me on it seemed to just wait until I had an episode then up the dosage. My present neuro explained the levels and put me on a dosage that would keep me in range. My seizures are minimal and I know a few people that take Lamictal ONLY and haven't had a seizure unless they came off their meds. It seemed to give them false hope that they were seizure free untill they stopped taking it then back on the meds and all is well.
This is great to hear. Without seizure meds, I might get four a year. I've gone up to a year without any but I really just want to be "seizure free". Dilantin worked for me, but like you, I wanted to avoid long term side effects, primarily bone related.
I'll make sure my neurologist shares the Lamictal level information with me. I woke up quite dizzy this morning. It felt flu-like. I almost fell into the wall walking down the hallway. I guess that might be similar to your "morning sickness". Thanks again for the great and informative reply!
Cheers,
Andrew
