Seizures after Sex

I've had seizures since I was 9 and am 36 now needless to say that means through out my entire sex life and 15 years of marriage. But, last night for the first time ever I had a partial complex seizure after sex with my wife and wondered if this had happened to anyone else and if a doctor had told them anything about it?

Re: Seizures after Sex

I have TLE caused by a brain tumour. I had it removed in November and am doing well. The operation has not stopped my seizures but not they are only at night.

Since the operation though I now have seizures after sex and orgasm seems to trigger it.

I haven't actually told my neuro this yet - but will next time I see him.

The worse thing is we only got married in February so this is not a good start to married life really.

Does this happen to anyone else. Is there hope!

Re: Seizures after Sex

i have been in a relationship for about 18 years now  and everyone knows about my seizures,my bf told me i had a seizure while we were having sex one time.I dont think it freaked him out but it did make him stop at that point what we were doing.Since i dont remember them after i come out of them if he never told me about it i would of never known about it.I have had seizures for about 16 years now and still dont know how or why i got them but u shouldnt let it stop you from doing things you want to do in life.

Re: Seizures after Sex

I had a brain tumour as well and had it removed. And as same as you, the operation didn't stop the seizures. I've

been going through this for about 15 years so far, switching over from different meds. just praying that one will finally

control these seizures. It was mainly the day after sex and orgasm that the seizures became more active for me. A

new medication that I have been on  has seemed to cut those seizures down from being active after an orgasm. It is

Lyrica. It is still too soon to say if it fully has control over those after sex and orgasm and I'm still testing that out.

Re: Seizures after Sex

There was another thread like this actually. I have had orgasms trigger my complex partials too. Some reason just the secondary seizure, not the primary now that i think about it...odd. But It tends to be much quicker, much milder, and limited in the movement of my regular ones, unless it was a rather spectacular sexual effort and that can bring about a more severe one. It's not always though. And for that reason it's become somewhat of a joke, that you know the sex was good when you made the girl tremble. You know, *really* tremble.

If I remember, my doctor simply did a "huh, yeah." kinda answer. Like saying "it does that." For me they are much more benign than my usual sz so I don't really mind them and they don't interfere much. A married partner will understand and will ride along with it instead of freaking out. This would be much more of a problem if you were prone to one night stands. Explain that one!

Re: Seizures after Sex

Yes I have had partial complex's with meds after sex. My wife who doesn't have ep also seems to have partials after climaxing but I can't explain that. She just compares them to my seizures since it's so easy to do so.

I read an article (medical) about a study that concluded statistically that seizures at orgasm originate in the right hemisphere of the brain.

Re: Seizures after Sex

I can't say that I've had a seizure during or after sex (since I have complex Partials) but I can maybe answer a few things when it comes to this. I have been asked this as a nurse since I work in the neurology department at the hospital and had a neurologist tell me exactly why it does happen sometimes. The doctor told me is that when you get the orgasm, the sharp electrical activity (which gives you that feeling of the orgasm) travels completely up your spine and if it's strong enough, it can be the same as getting shocked with 220 volts! I know it's amazing to me to know that! He said this will sometimes knock off the electrical balance in your nerves since over half of your nerves are in your genital area to start with. The imbalance is just what it takes to get the seizures started but usually it isn't a big enough imbalance to cause a "full blown" seizure although sometimes it does and is perfectly capable of doing so. My feeling about it is go on and get that groove on, if it doesn't make you tired enough afterwards, the  seizure usually will. Sex is one of the strongest things in a relationship, so keep it on.

Re: Seizures after Sex

THAT IS REALLY INTERESTING. SORRY I AM IN THE MEN'S DEPARTMENT, BUT THIS CAUGHT MY EYE. SO, COULD THAT MAKE A WOMAN VERY SEXUAL, GO POSTICTAL AND HAVE NEVER-ENDING SEX? GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE I AM EVEN ASKING THIS.........I HAVE COMPLEX PARTIALS AND WAS TOLD THEY DO MAKE PEOPLE VERY SEXUAL.

I USE ALL CAPS FOR THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED. I WISH YOU PEACE, LOVE, BLESSINGS, JOY.........JAN

Re: Seizures after Sex

AHA, WE MEET AGAIN! TWICE IN ONE DAY! I FOUND SOMETHING OUT THAT MAY HELP, BUT I AM NOT SURE. COMPLEX PARTIALS CAN MAKE A PERSON VERY SEXUAL. FOR ME, I AM GLAD THE NEURONTIN IS HELPING WITH THAT BECAUSE IT WAS REALLY GETTING OUT OF HAND. I WOULD EXPECT SINCE THEY DO MAKE ONE SEXUAL, EXTREMELY HORNY TO BE HONEST, IT SEEMS LIKE HAVING ONE AFTER SEX WOULD GO ALONG WITH THAT. DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? SORRY, I KNOW THIS IS FOR MEN, BUT I SAW THIS YESTERDAY AND WANTED TO REPLY.

Re: Seizures after Sex

Hi, All!

I wanted to give some input on how orgasm/seizures work in ME. Most of you are saying that orgasm can induce a seizure/s for you. My crazy brain works somewhat differently.

I am a woman, and when I perform oral sex on my husband, and he pulls me deep, THAT triggers a minimal partial complex seizure...the mild convulsions of which CAUSE ME to orgasm! The convulsing part totally works for him (thankfully I don't clench my teeth!), and ALSO for ME. So, it's a win-win situation. ;-)

He does have to watch me carefully, though, because on occassion the convulsions toward the end of orgasm (still having seizure, also, I believe) CAN get more severe, causing me to lose consciousness & have teeth issues. But that is rare for me.

Since research shows that the seizures & orgasm are triggered in the same area of the brain, I would imagine either one can trigger the other. Possibly moreso in those of us who are naturally extreme in the sexual desire/libido realm.

Dunno. Would love to see more scientific data on this. If any of you find any info on how to actually VOLUNTEER for the PET scan during orgasm studies, let me know. I'm IN!

Re: Seizures after Sex

Me, Again. I should also point out that if I have an orgasm in the absence of actual intercourse, the orgasm ALWAYS turns into a seizure at the end...& I can totally lose consciousness.

So, it goes both ways for me. A seizure can cause orgasm, and an orgasm can cause seizures.

Lucky me. (?)

Re: Seizures after Sex

KNOW WELL WHAT YOU MEAN !!

I'd be dishonest if I didn't say that after having lived with epilepsy in a multitude of forms for over 35 years that orgasm (either after sex or masturbation) can bring on a seizure. There's nothing I know that can be counted on more to do this than sex. Yet when I've mentioned this to neurologists, they are all to quick to reply, "No way!". Face it, orgasm involves a multitude of parts of the human body, including our blood vessels and all of the nerves in our precious brain. And I do know that the brain has much to do with our whole need for sex, what we actually do when performing it, and how we come out of it. I've asked many men who have epilepsy if this is true with them, and most all have answered "Definitely."

Re: Seizures after Sex

Let me ask you all THIS:

Is the seizure, whether before, and causing orgasm...or after, being induced BY orgasm...in anyway pleasurable/unpleasureable?

For me, the one is just an extension of the other...both an enjoyable aspect.

Re: Seizures after Sex

Hi,

No doctor will talk directly about sex but...

what also can trigger a seizure is HIPERVENTILATION- which means fast (or very fast) respiration- like when we run, exercise or... have sex.

Happy me I never seize because of sex :)

Good luck,

Ola

Re: Seizures after Sex

This is a MAJOR problem for me and my husband.  I also have Complex Partial seizures.  I've been having seizures or something???  for over a year now after sex.   I don't know if I'm having seizures or what...but something happens when I start to get aroused..I feel like my mind is drifting away someway...almost like I'm leaving my body...I DO NOT LIKE IT WHEN THIS HAPPENS!!!....but at the same time, I'm feeling all the "important" sexual feelings in the right parts that I am supposed to be feeling...actualy quite intensely!   Well, when I do orgasm, I experience somewhat of a seizure...where I shake all over, but I am conscious.  I'm not able to respond to my husband, but I can hear him.  I feel like I'm not in my body and a pressure in my head.  The other night was the worse ever...it scared me really bad.  I wasn't able to talk,  or lift my arms or my legs..I thought I was having a stroke...it lasted about 3 minutes.  Then when I was able to roll over, I was completely drained and weak, couldnt even get up off the bed.  The next day, I felt strange all day, hard to focus and concentrate and form my words and just really really tired.  I actually went to my Family Doctor and he is wondering if it is related to my heart rate as I told him I'm having a lot of palpitations...??  So he is setting me up with a holter monitor.  Hoping to find out what's going on...I don't like this feeling...NOT AT ALL...

Re: Seizures after Sex

Lady Jane, you're talkin' sense! I know I've written bits about the connection between sexual orgasm and seizures, but having gone through both (well, maybe not both) for 35 years, I can say definitely. Let's be realistic. A orgasm, whether male or female, involves our entire nervous system--what I like to call "our electrical system." I got to the point where I knew I could count on a seizure after sex, and would limit anything having to do with the latter. And when one of those seizures would hit, I--like you--wouldn't be myself for days afterwards. I'd be easily confused, even have problems with my vision. If I were in medical school, I'd get a study going having to do with this exact question. And no, I wouldn't be interested in other students' opinions. That is, unless they had both an active sex life AND epilepsy. Well, we're into a new century, and maybe such studies are going to be considered far more than in years past. But know that you are not alone.

Re: Seizures after Sex

I have searched on line for any info re this subject but have not found a lot really on the subject of orgasms "causing" seizures.  So,  If anyone has found a good article on why seizures happen during orgasms, please send me the link.  I'm interesting in learning more.  Seeing as how my neurologist doesn't want to talk to me about it.  Thanks for the support!

Re: Seizures after Sex

This has been a thread before. Strong orgasms triggered my complex partials, it was perhaps one of the first triggers I recognized. I would mostly start to get quick muscle jerks, and if it wasn't to strong it would take my partner a while to even realize I was seizing and not putting on a show! I would be unresponsive for a moment, like my brain had gone quiet, I would feel the pressure someone else mentioned as well, or ants crawling down the back of my neck and then it was gone. If I was tired...there's no way I could have told the differrence ;)

There were times I was more prone to it than others. Don't know why. But I don't see why this would be so odd. Sex is such a harrowing experience for your body! Blood flow changes, hormones go out, heart rate increases, oxygen flow...you hold your breathe maybe by accident, any combination could be making it happen.

And no, doctor has never said anything about it. I have mentioned it but they shrug. What's there to say?

Re: Seizures after Sex

I started having this problem also a few years ago, and I talked to my neurologist about this and she sent me to see a urinologist, her and my urinologist came to the same conclusion that the reason for me to have the seizure while having or right after me having sex was more than likely because of me getting overly excited or having to much concern for the other person while having sex.Meaning "too concerned about pleasing the other person" or "being to worried that I would have one while having sex" or "stressing myself out too much worried about having the sex". And other things relating to the sme things. They both told me the best thing I could do is to try not too think about it so much and just engoy pleasing the other person and yourself before before and while actually having the sex." This and talking with my wife about it has actually helped me with it greatly and it hardly happens anymore. So basicly, dont stress yourself out about it, and enjoy yourself and try not too worry about it!!!!!!!!!!! And beive it or not, it works!!!!!!

Re: Seizures after Sex

Stress is the cause of your seizure.  Your neurologist might prescribe some lorazepam (Ativan).   I only get to take it after my 1st seizure to prevent clusters, but talk to your neuro.
