deja vu aura

Can someone tell me again what a deja vu aura is like.  Are you remembering the seizure as if it was a familiar event or do you just get a familiar feeling without really knowing what it is about and you just can't put your finger on it.  I've gotten these but it's hard to describe it that good.

Re: deja vu aura

It is a feeling as though you have been at a particular place, time, event, taste, smell, feeling. It is like " I have had this exact intense feeling before. I have them all the time. It is hard to explain; unless you have been there. Sometimes I get this real thick heavy feeling over me before a seizure. Hope this is helpful.

Re: deja vu aura

So you have like a general feeling of "I've done this before or been there before" but can't really think of what you've done or where it was.  I can't really explain it that good.

Re: deja vu aura

yep- it is hard to explain. It is kind of neat in a way though; takes a person back to a different time. For example- I saw a semi on the highway the other day with the brand of chewing gum Fruit Stripe. Anyway, as soon as I saw that truck, I immediately got this taste in my mouth that tasted like that gum. Go figure.

Re: deja vu aura

That's kinda funny.  I think our brains are wired that way.  I can think of some kind of food and my mouth will start tasting it right away.  If it's something sour my mouth will start to hurt.  I've always had a really active imagination and probably an overactive brain as well.  I know I drive my parents nuts sometimes.  I'm always questioning things and coming up with new ideas for things.  From what I've read this can be typical of people with epilepsy.  I had to paint a portrait once for art class.  I took a couple glances at a person's face I saw in a book and then painted the entire thing in less than an hour.  My teacher asked me if I got someone else to paint it for me so it must have looked pretty good.  I can also pick up a person's accent and start talking like them without making a mistake.  I also come up with answers to questions on the tv show Jeopardy.  They are things I probably shouldn't know but my brain just comes up with the answer without me even trying.  I don't know if this has anything to do with epilepsy and its kind of on the weird side but many times I get preminitions of events.  I'll know when someone is going to call our house and it's somebody that hasn't called in a long time.  I got a preminition right before my cat died unexpectedly and one time I bought a raffle ticket and I knew without a doubt my number would be called and it was.  That happened when I was 9.  This was probably more information than people wanted to know about me.  I guess this can have its upsides once in a while.

Re: deja vu aura

I THINK YOU ARE A VERY INTELLIGENT AND ARTICTIC PERSON! I COME UP WITH WORDS THAT I DON'T EVER REMEMBER SAYING OR THINKING, I WRITE THEM AND THEN HAVE TO LOOK UP WHAT THEY MEAN!

I WROTE A BLOG ON THIS SITE LAST NIGHT, BECAUSE I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DEJA VU WITH EPI, AND BEING INTUITIVE. IT SEEMS LIKE THEY ARE THE SAME THING TO ME. I AM LIKE YOU. I KNOW WHO IS CALLING, I KNOW A  WHOLE LOT OF THINGS BEFORE THEY EVER HAPPEN AND HAVE SINCE I WAS A KID. WHEN I WAS A KID, I THOUGHT IT WAS MY IMAGINATION, BUT FOUND OUT YEARS LATER IT WAS NOT MY IMAGINATION AT ALL! MY DAUGHTER AND I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN SO CLOSELY CONNECTED, I JUST THINK OF HER, AND SHE WILL ASK ME 'WHAT'.  I KNEW WHEN MY NEPHEW HAD PASSED AWAY, AND OTHERS IN MY FAMILY. WHEN I WOULD GET THE CALL, I WOULD SAY, 'I KNOW'. MY FAMILY THINKS I AM A BIT WEIRD, BUT OH WELL! SUCH IS LIFE. I COULD GO ON FOREVER WITH WHAT I KNOW AND HAVE SEEN.  THAT HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH E. I TURNED WHAT I KNEW INTO THE SPIRITUAL ASPECTS OF WHAT EXACTLY I COULD DO AND THE RESULTS WERE AMAZING AND WONDERFUL! YOU SHOULD TRY IT! YEAH, A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK I AM WEIRD, BUT I THINK IT IS BECAUSE THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND AND THAT SCARES THEM.

Re: deja vu aura

I get the deja vu aura, too. I usually have it the bath tub. And I will have a phrase just start repeating over and over in my head. It get's faster and faster and faster and until I can't understand it at all. And then the very next minute my daughter will walk into the room and say the exact phrase. Then I get that terrible sinking feeling in my stomach and just sit there, I don't realy know what happens then. I guess that is the seizure part.  I am new to all of this. The last time I had that feeling in my stomach I woke up in an ambulance after my first gm seizure. I don't take baths anymore.

Re: deja vu aura

Hi, I think our situations are different as you get GM seizures and I only get SPS and CPS due to TLE. However, I find that heat is a big factor, I have had hot baths to try to relax what with everything and they are almost always followed by seizures. I have been on holiday for the last two years in the western med and both years a bit too long on the sunbed has caused seizures too.

Re: deja vu aura

Maybe you're dehydrated in the situations where you feel hot and that triggers your seizures.

WOW!! I also awoke in an ambulance with my first grand mal! Weird feeling huh?

Re: deja vu aura

WHEN THAT HAPPENS TO ME, ALL OF A SUDDEN I KNOW THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING, SEE EVERYTHING VERY CLEARLY. IT IS HARD TO EXPLAIN. IT IS LIKE ALL OF A SUDDEN I HAVE THE ANSWER TO ALL MY QUESTIONS, AND THEN I HAVE A SEIZURE. PROBLEM IS, I DON'T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS, BUT IN THAT MOMENT I THINK I DO! IT IS VERY STRANGE. IT IS LIKE A WRONG 'AHA' MOMENT,

Re: deja vu aura

Darn! I want the kind of seizure that makes me feel as if I had the answers to all my quesrions (even if the answers aren't right). That is better than most seizures in my opinion!

Re: deja vu aura

Be careful what you ask for, I have simple-partial seizures like this that often end up spreading and becoming tonic-clonic seizures.

Imagine your mind trying to access all the knowledge the universe contains, but you're incapable of processing and understanding that much information, and the only defense your mind has against being overwhelmed (and quite possibly destroyed) by this is to have a seizure.

Re: deja vu aura

For me its extremely powerful - usually before a seizure (TLE for me) a stop in your tracks kind of power. Yes, before I was diagnosed and before any of my TLE came to the forefront I used to get the odd moment of deja vu but it was just a brief feeling of "ooh isn't that strange I think I have been here before".

One of the factors in my original going to the drs was the newly found intense feeling of deja vu followed by weirdness. It was completely different to the usual slight feeling of similarity to a situation. It was sooo powerful it made me feel sick, it was a rising feeling and then smack, Jesus, oh my god, what the hell I have been here before, I know everything, wow, I am psychic, I know this is destiny/fate etc and I have seen this all before this is god's plan type of scenario!!

Sometimes this is pre-empted by or accompanied by an extremely strong smell of vinegar that gets right up my nose freezing cold and into my brain, then the deja vu, then a seizure.

Re: deja vu aura

my auras have a smell to em too/ as for the dujavu it always feels like i did this before like i am i in some kind of time warp and got sent backwards for a redo, just a strange feeling. at least we know it happens to other people too.

Re: deja vu aura

I've had psychic experiences. I was determined to be "queen" of the winter solstice at our school which you got by finding a pendant in your piece of cake. I spent what felt like months wishing it would happen and somehow I knew that it would. I of course got it out of the entire school of 450 students. I know who's going to call, I sometimes know what people will say before they do (not just yes or no, but random sentences). What happens the most is that I'll think of a question in class and somebody will almost always raise their hand and ask the exact same question no matter how obscure or unrelated. I'll just have the question in my mind and wait for it to be asked knowing that it will. I also knew when my grandmas died before I got the calls.
I've played with the idea of my mind being more open to things but have never connected this to epilepsy. Hmm, that makes it much more interesting!

Re: deja vu aura

DRAGOOL, I DON'T THINK IT HAS A THING TO DO WITH EPILEPSY. WE ALL HAVE THE ABILITY TO KNOW THINGS. IT IS WHAT YOU DO WITH IT THAT COUNTS, OR WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH IT. SOME MAY CALL IT PSYCHIC, I DON'T. I TURNED MINE INOT A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE, AS I SAID BELOW, AND BOY IT IS AMAZING THE THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN YOU CONNECT WITH GOD! I COULD GO ON AND ON BUT REALLY, I WOULDN'T, BECAUSE IT REALLY IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL WHAT THEY DO WITH THE GIFTS THEY HAVE BEEN GIVEN........THE GIFT OF KNOWING IS A WONDERFUL GIFT FROM GOD! IT ISN'T DEJA VU, WHICH I DON'T UNDERSTAND, AS RELATED TO E.

Re: deja vu aura

I just wanted to add an additonal point to this. I saw an episode of the the Dr Oz Show recently in which he interviewed the Long Island Medium....sorry I cannot recall her name off hand! Anyways, they had her hooked up to an EEG as she was giving a reading to one of the audience members. When they analyzed her brain activity during the reading, she had an abnormal reaction in one area of the brain. The doctor said that type of activity is seen in patients experiencing seizures. Maybe your deja vus are signs of something more.

Re: deja vu aura

I had 3 of my "episodes" today. I first get the deja vu, ringing in the ears, my body and head are on fire and I get that feeling of impending doom. Then the aura settles in. I can see this small man, he's always there. It's as if I'm remembering a dream, but don't remember dreaming it. This only last for maybe 20 seconds, but terrifies the heck out of me. When it's finished with my mind and body, I'm exhausted feeling sick to my stomach.
I just found this site today and am elated that I'm not loosing my mind.
I've been going through these episodes for over 15 yrs now. I've had e.k.g. and e.e.g. tests done back when it first started. The doctor's didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Of course I don't tell anyone, until now. It's hard to explain what I feel and see when I go through this, time and time again.

Re: deja vu aura

I have TLE and i fall into the psychic symptom category. I described my auras ans seizires on a forum "aura and seizure description". Your experience is similar to mine.please read it. Deja Vu is always presemt for all of my seizures.

Re: deja vu aura

I've-gone-crazy-Sue

My seizures always begin with déjà vue. It feels as if my most recent seizure occured at exactly the same place and under exactly the same circumstances as the one I'm currently experiencing. Of course, it's not an accurate assumption; it's simply the start of a partial seizure.

Re: deja vu aura

Dear friends,

I have been  having fit attacks for the past 40 years +. Started on Mysoline 200mg t..d.s. The drug was removed from shelves, now I am on Eptoin 100mg t.d.s. & Rivotril 2mg t.d.s.  started having auras about an year back. It's a funny but daunting feeling - everything becomes confusing, cannot  talk, just stares ahead. can hear what others say,but unable to undestand or reply. Many things you have done, heard or expect to do seems to hapen at once, which is of course confusing. You enter a dreamworld, very, very complex & you cannot control yourself. If you are taking a wash you try to wash, apply soap, try to do a shave(If a male) & try to wipe yourself all at the same time. But it takes quite some time to end as many of us continue to have more than one aura in a sequence. To be frank, friends, I hate them as I get the feeling of committing suicide as there is no end to it.In my case, This nasty occurence generally takes place at night & I keep awake for over 2-3 Hrs. I pray to God that he sees us all & give us some care, & remove this feeling completely. I Love you all. Garli.

I am  a 64year old  happily married. woman, who has had epilepsy from birth.  These deja vu episodes are part of my life, too.  They have lessened in intensity, but as you say, they are almost impossible to describe.  Mine usually last about 2 or3 seconds, when a word - "ergo" - comes into my brain.  It's irritating, because my concentration is affected and I have to re-read something or ask someone to repeat a comment - if I'm talking I have to stop and start again.

However, the longer episodes can last on and off most of the day.  I recently started a volunteer job in a charity shopa couple of days a week, where I am on the shop floor and operating the till for purchasers.  The first time I started on the cash desk, learning the ropes took a great deal of concentration and stress.  When I got home, this deja vu started and stayed with me on and off during the day.  I was exhausted, and had an early night, which helped a good deal.  I am taking Keppra and Lamictal every day, which seem to control the condition, but stress is obviously a factor in triggering deja vu and generalized attacks. You just have to go with the flow with deja vus, I've found.
