Like everyone knows, all these medications depend on the person.

Personally: I've had seizures since I was around 12 yrs old... I'm 22 now and lucky for me nothing horrific has happened. I get tonic clonic seizures.

Anyways, when I first started taking lamictal (when I was young and little) it was small dosage and I didn't notice any particular bad side effects.  I didn't have any seizures for a few years and my EEG showed nothing as well. I still stayed on the medicine however. My neurologist says the main reason I got seizures is because of my lack of sleep. I was doing better with this habit until I stared college.

My first year I made it seizure free. Second year, I got my first seizure after years. So that was mortifying because driving was off limits.

Since that time I believe I increased my dosage for lamictal. Sorry I don't remember to what, but it wasn't THAT much.. mainly because I'm a small girl. I was fine for a year or more and then bam, I had an episode.
I think the reason for all of it is because of the stress in college. I clearly don't know how to handle my workload responsibly.

I get really paranoid with this ordeal so I just told my neurologist I want to increase the lamictal dosage all together. I started taking 300 mg a day. One day, I got extremely paranoid of getting a seizure and overdosed. It was so shitty...... The side effects on the bottle happened... times 100. I GOT SO DAMN DIZZY. I couldn't walk straight, I couldn't stand up! When I tried to stand up, my motor skills were so bad that I would just start falling back down. This was in public so I had to play it cool and go to the side of a building and then call someone to come help walk me back to my place. I was starving so I ate food and shortly after, I puked it all up.
Ok the side effects were extreme, but that was because I didn't increase it gradually.

Anyways, I know my story may be confusing.. because honestly I don't remember the timeline myself... but NOW I am taking 600 mg of lamictal a day (300 mg in the morning & 300 at night). I told my doc that I'm still scared of that dosage, I wanted more... but he wasn't feeling that idea so he suggested that we add Keppra. So now I'm taking 150 mg of Keppra in the morning and 150 at night.

One thing I have noticed that is clearly due to the medicine is that if I take them on an empty stomach, I get dizzy... Again, to the point where I can't walk straight and almost fall down. I MUST eat something before taking it.

At some point, I decided to decrease Keppra without doctors consent (I know....) and seeing how smart I am, I did this the same week that I was had a lot of school stuff to do. By the end of the week, instead of sleeping in, I woke up fairly early and as I was eating breakfast.. BAM, I feel on the floor and had a seizure. I woke up in my bed and then fell right back asleep and didn't wake for hoursss.

All in all, I STILL think lamictal is good (for me). I wouldn't go off of it, but that's because I've been on it for almost a decade and it's controlled it well. Granted I did have a seizure, but no medicine is ever going to be a miracle cure.

I wanted to say that after reading everyones posts about their side effects, I feel so much better.. and so sad at the same time. I have noticed my memory is terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible too, but I just thought it was because I'm just stupid, not medicine related. And lately I randomly get into such bitch fits for no reason. It's hard to control it.
I won't risk changing medications though.

You just gotta find what is the safest for you.

I don't know........ good luck! We all need it:)

yomomma

"Bitch fits".... that was funny.

Wow, you really need to stop changing your doses and 'self medicating'.  I mean that.  These drug companies have done years and years of research, I urge you to trust the dosages.  Consistency is important with any seizure control medication.

Well, like you, I have tonic clonic siezures (diagnosed left temporal lobe epilepsy) and I (like you) take 600MG a day (300MG in the morning and 300MB at bedtime).

Do you get your lamictal levels checked?   I do that at least once every 6 months.  I would highly recommend you do that at least every 6 months or year.

Good luck! Cheers,
Andrew

Dilantin, I forgot the horror of that miserable experience!

Here is a link to what my story is, from this site in another topic.

I started lamictal, 25 mg 5 days ago.

I know all meds are different for each of us.

I have comed to learn that the process is akin to a Rubix Cube where I seemingly only get one or two sides complete. From there I ahve to mix things up agian - ie: re-adjust the meds.

I'm ready to try a different drug or a combination of different drugs. I'm not at all happy with my seizure control on Lamictal.

Seruzies

I am in my early 30's and diagnosed with epilepsy 3 years ago. The first medicine I was put on was Lamictal. It seemed to help control my seizures at first, but the side effects for me were horrendous. I was extremely tired all the time. I was also "zoning out" as friends could speak to me from only a few feet away and I would never know they spoke to me. I was dismally depressed and having suicidal thoughts. I felt I was living in a dark, gloomy fog. I began to realize that when my friends started asking "What's wrong with you?" I was quickly switched to Keppra. I have found Keppra to be what I call a "fluffier" version of Lamictal. About the same seizure control, but so much happier and no depressive side effects. Still some tiredness, but not as much. Since we have added Klonopin (clonazepam) to induce sleep/reduce late night seizures. This has been a huge help to me. Now trying new AED called Vimpat, hoping to reduce Keppra dosage. Just started, no results yet. Just wanted to give my experiences on Lamictal. I will never go back there again!

i am 20 years old and was diagnosed at 16.  i was first put on Tegratol (400 mg a day), then they added Epilum (1,000 mg a day), then they added Lamictal (300 mg a day).  I was experiencing all of the symptoms you have described.  About a year ago they reduced my Epilum to 500 mg a day (so obviously I started having seisures again while they found the right dose, I had been seisure free for a year) I got sick of the seisures so I lied to my parents and doctor and said I was feeling much better (even though I wasn't).  Recently I have been feeling terrible.  Tired all the time, no concentration, emotional, a bit depressed I think so I confessed that I was still feeling like this so we are looking into reducing or changing my medication.  I had no idea that it could be the Lamictal, everyone just assumed it was the Epilum due to the fact that I was on such a high dose.  Because of your post, I might suggest going off the Lamictal.  Thank you so much.

Hi! I'm also taking lamical, and yes I'm having just about the same effects as you. You see, I always seem to lose interest in the things in my everyday life. I feel like I don't have any insperation I always tend to lose focus, and I'm also gaining a great deal of weight. I keep telling my doctor that I believe that the meds. are to blame, but he disagrees with me through it all. I feel like he's saying this because this med. has been seeming to control my seizures. I didn't have a gran-mal for 8 to 9 months, and then out of the blue I had another gran-mal, it upset me so much, because I got to the point that I was finally gonna be seizure free of them. Except I know now that I have been set back again. I just wish that my doc. would try me on another med. something that would stop my side effects, yet give me the help that I need. I have had sz. for 33yrs now, so I have tooken many meds. over the years, and I know that even though the docs. and pharmacist say this med. or that med. doesn't have such side effects in certain meds. I can't help but disagree with them. Only because I have learned that our systems are all different, so we all react to the meds. side effects differently.

colama...

I've been on keppra and lamictal for a number of years. I've experienced drowsiness, lack of balance, memory loss, difficulty concentrating and speaking, and weight gain. Honestly, as much as I dislike these side-effects, the one I most regret is the weight gain. My doctor insists that keppra is "weight neutral," but I know better.

THANKS!!! my son who is almost 15yrs old just recently began Lamictal in combination with Zonegram while they are phasing out Banzel and Klonopin.  He has been on Tegretol, trileptal, Deapakote, Keppra.  He is also taking B-6 which actually slowed the frequency down immediately within  a week of starting this.  I contributed the fatigue & motor coordination& memory to being on alot of meds now I am truly wondering if the Lamictal only further intensifies this.  He is on 1200mg of Banzel .75mg klonopin, 100mg zonegram, 50mg Lamictal, 50mg b-6 all twice daily (7a/7p).  He seems to have the majority of seizures between 4-7pm when he is exhausted.  i do believe he is having aura but can't tell us.

What do you all experience when you have an aura?  I know they are uniquely different but any & all info will help me better help my son...

My son is primarily nonverbal so I must gauge everything by  his outward responses. Eventhough we have been moving very slow w/ the Lamictal (every 4 weeks 12.5mg) increase has hit him like a semi truck.  he is 150lbs and 5'9 but for some reason this med wipes him out!! We also have notice an increase in seizures the first 2 weeks of the increase.  We are no where near the target dosages and He just sits there like he is "stoned", dark circles under his eyes, and his coordination & balance is way off.  His ability to execute speech sounds and simple words requires sooo much energy where just a few months ago he was "flying" with basic sentences.  He just began having "gran mal (ok know its not the correct term) in September of last year in which they last for close to 5mins.  With the other meds there was only brief fatigue yet the seizures just increased in intensity and frequency! ARGH!

Please continue posting everyone for this is offering me such a window to what he is possibly experiencing so I can help advocated for him w/ the docs.

Any ideas & tips that you have found helpful (ie protein in Am vs carbs only was great) will be fantastic.  He is a fabulous kiddo and I just really know that through networking we are moving forward versus this backward peddling we have done including the 3 doc who passed him on to another because "his epilepsy is really complicated".

Just need to put this out there too-my son was bit by a tic in march treated for Lymes and then 5 months began having seizures. He had febrile seizures as a toddler but had been seizure free ( medicine free) for over 10 years.....just trying to put the puzzle together!

Thanks- Donna

About the aura question, I havn't really read up on what counts as an aura and what doesn't but I know that every time I am about to have a seisure my ears and my top lip start to burn and I can smell nail polish remover (amonia).  I hope this helps.  P.S. I also completely understand that your son cannot verbalise when he is having an aura, it is the weirdest thing but I can't either.  I know what is about to happen but I don't know if it's because I am already partly in the seisure or what but I just can't say anything.  It is both very scary and very frustrating and I'm sure it's the same for the people around me.

aramey

Ataxia, that's the description I've been looking for!!  Depending on the day, time, food that I've eaten before, my coordination can vary.  On the worst days I've almost fallen down the stairs, I've fallen into a filing cabinet at work (in front of people, embarrassing myself), and sat twitching.  It's a horrible feeling.

This isn't every day, and I've noticed that if I'm sure to take it exactly at every 12 hours (no less), and I have some protein for breakfast (as opposed to just carbs - b/c maybe the blood sugar level affects the response), it's much better.

Aside from that, I too have horrible issues with my memory. Sometimes I just feel like an idiot, not being able to articulate what I want to say, or I forget words and they'll be on the tip of my tongue.  When I'm typing, sometimes I forget how to spell words, or I'll be slightly dyslexic, both of which I've never had an issue with before.  It's so frustrating.

I've been on Keppra, which stopped working after two months, and also Gabapentin, which actually worked for about 2 years.  Now I'm on Lamictal and I just don't know what else to do.  I have an appointment with my doctor in a couple weeks to discuss the side effects and see if I can get my levels tested.  Hopefully we can reduce the dosage and see if that helps.

ephilli

Andrew,

Thanks very much for your reassurance.  I'm just starting to get worried, because they did reduce my dosage - from 200mg twice a day to 150mg twice a day.  It was great for awhile and my ataxia problems went away.  But for reason, now they're back.  It worries me because it makes me think I'll keep having to reduce my dose so much that it won't control my seizures anymore and I'll have to switch medications.

I've heard so many bad things about other medications.  I don't want to switch, but I'm starting to wonder if I might have to.

ephilli

Hey Ephilli,

I read over your side effects and I had all of them and none remain. Initially when I started taking Lamictal I had side effects that were new to me from the Dilantin I was taking before. Like you, my typing/writing, speaking and cognition got messy.

Anyway, it's a good idea to get the level checked to make sure you're not suffering more than you need to, as sometimes side effects are attributed to overdose (such as stupor, etc)

BUT, I also wrote because I wanted you to have some reassurance that since the side effects didn't last for me more than a few months perhaps you too might see things clear up. I feel good now.

Don't get too worried though (stress never helps with our condition). No matter what we have, the fortunate gift that we're alive should be enough to stand up straighter and think a little more intensely.

Cheers, Andrew

I've been on Lamictal since late 2004. Combined with the other 2 medications I'm on (Lyrica and Keppra), it has overall had a positive impact for me. I have gained some weight, but I attribute that to Lyrica, which I have been taking since early 2007. My only issue with Lamictal has been some blurred/double vision, which I've read is a common side effect. After speaking with my neurologist regarding the vision issue, we decided to break up my daily dosage to 3 times daily with a smaller dosage, as opposed to twice daily with a larger dosage. Therefore I am taking the same total amount each day, but 200 mg in the morning, 250 mg in the afternoon, and 500 mg in the evening. Previously we were doing 450 mg in the morning and 500 mg at night. When that happens it's mostly an issue with driving, which I've been able to do since my last seizure has not been since October of last year.

I took lamictal for about 6 months and was up to about 1600mg a day and it did absolutley nothing to help my seizures. It did not cause be to gain weight, but it did make me extreemly tired.

kbreton

i do have a question about lamictal (i posted a response yesterday)... last night i had two seizures back to back, and those were my first, that I know of, since I started Lamictal.  My aura used to be 2-5 minutes, and last night i had about 10 seconds, if that.  Is anyone else having breakthrough seizures or shortened auras?  In reguards to kathy91's post, I am on the brand name, not the generic.

bergje

I am wondering something about lamictal - I'm on 400 mg a day - 200 a.m. and 200 p.m.  Tonight, I could not remember if I took the 200 for the p.m., so, I took 200 mg.  Is it possible to have a seizure from overdoing it one night - and will this affect my dosages for the future?  I mean, will I have to take less tomorrow because I possibly took more tonight?

I am so worried that I will have a grand mal because of this!  I've had what I call "blips" - they are small seizures where I seem to phase out for a few seconds.  I've only had them since I've been on the 400 mg a day because I missed 100 mg total for the day!  So, I am a little concerned about this!

If anyone else has ever had this happen to them, I would appreciate your thoughts on this!

Thanks so much!

ilovegh

If you read the drug information (which every one of us should be doing) you will do the following:

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for
your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at your next
regularly scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up the
missed dose.
   THIS could be very bad.

Also, heed the advice of "Mom of 5" and get a weekly AM/PM pill box.  IT IS a life savor and cuts down on anxiety.  If you have had even ONE night where you woke up frantic because you weren't sure if you took it, you need to get a pill box! :)  All the anxiety is gone when you look over at the box and you see you took it or not.

BUY ME BUY ME!  :)

Cheers,
Andrew

Hello,

I was having a problem with forgetting if I took meds or not.  I would recommend the daily am/pm pill box. It has helped me greatly.. I don't think taking more meds will hurt.. but you may want to check with your MD.

mom of 5

Hello ILoveGH,

Years ago when I was on Dilantin, for whatever silly reason, I took a extra dose in the middle of the day!   I became full of anxiety and almost forced myself to throw up.  Scared, I called my neurologist and he said I would be fine.

Now, the instructions that come with your Lamictal state that if you skip a dose, do not take double.  But, I wouldn't worry too much if I was in your shoes.  I would probably call my doctor/neurologist but I don't think they are going to worry about it either.  But it will give you piece of mind.  If you don't have a doctor,  you can call your pharmacist.

If I were you, I'd do what I do.  I take 300MG in the morning and 300MG at night, so I have two pill boxes.  One is orange (for sun light!) and one is blue (for night time).

I never worry that I forgot to take a dose because all I have to do is look at the pill box and see that day is empty.

I used to just reach in the bottle each night but then sometimes I would wake up in the middle of the night filled with anxiety because I wasn't sure.  One night I even dumped the entire bottle out and counted each pill.

If you don't have pill boxes, get them!  It's worth the $10.00

Sorry to hear about your breakthroughs bergje.  I haven't had any since I started Lamictal back in September.  But, I'd have to wait a year and half before I can truely be sure that Lamictal is working because the last time I was off medication (officially) it took a year and a half to have a seizure.

Cheers,
Andrew

thanks :)  for me, I was off anti-seizure meds for about 4 years before I started having issues again, and it was because I was in a car accident and got a bad concussion from it :(

My memory is terrible since I've been taking Lamictal and is getting worse. I know memory loss with Epilepsy is a common thing anyway, but my memory was never anything like it is now on Lamictal. I'm glad to see it's not just me. My memory is to the point that if I need to remember something, I have to write it down. People who know me will also tell me to write things down because they know I won't remember.

Seruzies

Seruzies, How long have you been on Lamictal?  What did you switch from (if any).  Are you taking any other medication in combination with Lamictal?

Cheers,
Andrew

apmast

Hey Andrew,

I've been on Lamictal for around 10 years or so, I'm not sure. (Shocked I know, an epileptic that can't remember) I'm only taking Lamictal. The drug before this one was Dilantin. I've taken Depakote also. I think I've been switched around so many times is because nothing seems to work for me as far as meds go. For me, the most important thing is to make sure I take good care of myself, eat right, take my meds and get plenty of rest. Even if I do everything I'm supposed to, I still have seizures. Lamictal doesn't seem to be working well for me anymore, I'm ready to try something else. (Something cheaper would be nice anyway) I'm waiting for my court hearing for disability, and until then, I'm paying for Lamictal out of pocket and that's not a cheap date. Dilantin is cheaper, and I'm willing to give that a try again. Lamictal makes me feel tired all the time too. I'm willing to try anything that helps me get my seizures better under control.

Seruzies

Hey Seruzies,

Thanks for writing back.  I was one Dilantin for 10 years.  I loved it.  I felt completely myself.  At first it took a while for my body to adjust.  Anyway, after 10 years the effectiveness started to lower.  Dilantin causes Osteoperosis so for women especially it's important to make sure you exercise and get good calcium intake, plus folic acid!  (well, all this is what I've read).

Anyway, after 10 years of being on Lamictal, have you gone in the office to have your blood levels checked to make sure you're in an adequate therapuetic level?  I only say that because over time your body can process any drug more effectively and it often leads to a need to increase the dosage.  If you haven't had your levels checked I would do so.

What's funny about Lamictal is scientists are not sure HOW it works for seizures.  They 'think' they know but they actually have no definitive information.  Lamictal works completely from a different perspective than other anti-seizure medications, which they are aware of that.  Amazing!

My son has been on Lamictal since September/October 2008 (I posted a comment around this time asking for experences).  We haven't noticed any side effects and are finding his siezures are more controlled.  Last December he has a case of pneumonia with high fivers and no seizures!!!  Although over Easter he had his first break-though seizure that wasn't accompanied by a fever.  This seizure was more of a absence seizure without the muscle jerks of a tonic-clonic.  It was extremely mild and was over in about a minute.  He immediatly sat up and wanted to continue to play on the swingset.  I did read in a reply to my earlier comment that the generic form can cause more breakthough seizures.  Has anyone else noticed this?

All in all, we are very happy with the Lamictal.  No weight gain, no memory loss, in fact, we don't see any side effects.

Has anyone taking Lamictal long term noticed any learning difficulties?  Alex also does some hand-flapping when he's really excited.  It has diminished over the past 2 years.  Any thoughts on this?

This website really is wonderful.  It is great to connect with others.  To the others that experience seizures...Remember, everyone on this website support you and care about you.  God Bless!

kathy91

Kathy91,

I have been on Lamictal for over 2 years now. I am having 2-4 tonic clonic seizures a month but was having this amount before. I have developed hand tremor on my left side that at times is pretty obvious. I also have a bit of a head shake. This does occur more so when I am excited. I have researched and one of the side effects is this tremor/shake according to several doctors and pharmacists I have spoken with. My neurologist doesn't seem to be concerned. I must say that it makes it difficult to eat, I am left handed, and etc.

Hope this helps.

My daughter has whole body jerks & I have hand jerks. I have trouble writing cuz my hand jerks & messes it all up. I talked to the pharmacists about this also & he said that he didn't think it had anything to do with the Med cuz it only caused 1 % of the people taking it to have that type of problem. There has to be a one % some where. It effects both my hands.

I've only been on it for about 6 weeks, I have actually lost weight since I started it.  I'm on 100mg/day.  It does make you tired, but as the others have said, it does get better with time.  The first 3-4 days I was on it, I slept alot, but your body will adjust.  My memory is getting bad, especially short term, but I don't know if thats from the Lamictal, the other drugs I'm taking(I'm a chronic pain patient as well), or if it's caused by the seizures.  Hope this helps :)

Hi all,

I'm on a tiny dosage of lamictal as I transition from tegretol to lamictal over the next 5 weeks.  Currently I take my 600 mg of Teg. and 50 mg of Lamictal daily.   I have noticed that the skin on my face is very itchy and dry, and my belly is all bloated.  Has any of you experienced this?  Of course, it may not be the lamictal, but just in case I thought I'd ask.

The whole point in my switching is to avoid the memory loss, weight issues, increased cholesterol and issues with danger of osteoperosis that Tegretol threatened.  Please don't tell me Lamictal is going to give me 'brain fog' as well!!

Thanks

Sarah

SarahD

Sarah,

Please please take care while switching from Tegritol to Lamictal! I had been 16 years seizure-free until I started making that change. I had been on Tegritol and Depakote together for years, but our doctor (my twin sister also has it) wanted us to get off of those and onto one drug: Lamictal. Jennifer weaned off of her Depakote first, then her Tegretol, and finally was on Lamimctal only. She is still seizure-free. Because our seizures had been controlled for so long, he didn't see any problem with me weaning off of my Tegretol first and then my Depakote. I have had seizures ever since, so we have left me on Lamictal (Lamotrigine) & Depakote. All I'm saying is, make sure you have constant contact. (My doctor is 4 hours away and has a large patient load. He is very difficult to get hold of.)

As for the side effects of "brain fog", I haven't noticed that. But bad memory runs in my family. I have developed a periodic stammer, like a stutter, but only occasionally. My face gets dry, and my scalp itchy, but it never occurred to me that those might be side-effects. To be honest, I have lived with epilepsy all my life and never even thought about drugs' idiosyncrasies. This site is a real eye-opener to me!

Good luck in your transition - perhaps you'll have the success my sister had!
-Heather.

I'm on 400mg twice a day and have noticed the weight gain and a bit of tiredness. The tirednness does get better. The biggest challenge I have dealt with is memory loss. I work with challenging myself to memory games and trivia to keep my mind fresh and working sharp. It really works and my Neuro says it's a great idea. Been Grand Mal epileptic for 31 years with only the occasional breakthrough on it.

hello,

I take lamital with dilantin. 300mg am and 400mg pm. I haven't noticed tiredness or weight gain but only have seizures 4-6 times a month. VNS has helped.

hope you feel better

I am in the process of switching from Keppra (now just 1 500mg @night) to the generic Lamictal (1/2 100mg 2xday for about 3 more weeks or so then 1 100mg 2xday).  I have actually noticed that since the transition started I can barely sleep, usually 3-4 hrs. a night broken up, and I have actually lost weight.  I do not know if it is the Lamictal or not but that has been the only change in any meds since being diagnosed a few months ago.  I do have to agree with the laziness thing though, I have noticed I do not want to do anything lately, but I figured it was just because I still have to get used to all of this and it's just a 'funk' I need to get out of.  The more I learn about this the better I have been getting with that though, so I cannot say for sure it is the meds.

I do not know if this helps or not but that has been my experience so far.

Good Luck and Best Wishes!

kmf

My neurologist noted that lamictal can make one feel wakeful, so that I should take my nightly dose (even this initial dose that is so small) earlier in the evening and not right before bed.  Ask your neurol. if you can do that and your insomnia may improve.

Chamomile tea, and listening to good calm music, or relaxed groovy cd of the ocean or Tibetan flute music (or whatever you like) can also be beneficial.

And if you have a cat, make it purr next to your ear!  Cats really know how to sleep. :)

good luck,

I've been on Lamictal for a little over a year now and have experienced no weight gain or excessive tiredness, although I could use a little of both! As a little side note, during the past year + Lamictal has been my 1st line treatment for simple partial seizures and it didn't change anything, so I've tried a handful of add-on medicines (actually they've all been primarily 1st line medicines added as secondary medicines) and still no improvement whatsoever. Maybe it's time to add a third... yuck

well i am 18 and i have been taking lamictal since i was 15 and i take 300mg (7am) in the morning and 300mg at night (7pm). i find that if i skip a dose, even one dose, i am pretty much screwed 8/10 i will have a seizure.. this medication is very expensive and i suggest that you don't take this medication unless you are taking it for bi-polar reason (it is also for this problem).

jsolei...

Hey there.  I take the same dose you take (300mg morning & 300mg night).  Yea, I wouldn't recommend skipping a dose of any epilepsy medication.  I would keep a few pills with me at work just in case I might forget in the morning.  I have two pill boxes, one is blue (for night) and one is orange (for day).  The first thing I do in the morning is take my pills.  The last thing I do before bed is take my pills.

As for the expense, the generic is $10 with any well covered health care insurance plan.  I do agree that without health care insurance name brand Lamictal can be upwards of $200 or more a month.  The generic is always an option.

This message is only for people who have controlled seizures and are on lamictal and no other seizure medication but are experiencing tiredness and weight gain.

I'm on lamictal (generic) and I have since september 2008.  I have gained weight but it's been healthy weight and I attribute it to healthy food and regular exercise and more rest and sleep.  Take a look at the last year of progress here: http://members.cox.net/cobra2003/onlinepics/FatLoss.jpg

The photo on the left was taken on January 2008.  My lifestyle was drinking alcohol perhaps one day a week sometimes a few more.  I was eating just about anything I wanted and in larger amounts than I knew I needed.  I was not concerned with exercise.  I was on Dilantin at the time.  I started feeling dizzy and having anxiety about seizures so my doctor switched me to Lamictal.  At first I was a wreck as my body adjusted to the taper from Dilantin and ramping up of Lamictal.  "I tped like thsi on the keybored" and I couldn't focus or remember stuff.  SO, I picked myself up from my bootstraps and spent the entire summer engaged in regular activities like shooting baskets at the park, swimming in the pool and walking around instead of driving.  I ate MUCH better, dropped alchohol and fast food, and I began eating more whole grains and fiber.  The big thing was keeping my meal servings under control and eating more often (6 small meals every 3 hours).   As you can see from the middle picture (september 2008) these changes shed a boat load of fat.

The picture on the right was taken in January 2009.  I gained a nice coat of muscle from the middle picture taken in September 2008.   I eat 6 times a day, modest and balanced home-cooked meals.  I only eat one junk meal a week, typically Friday.  I DONT drink alcohol and I sleep 7.5 hours a night, sometimes 8.

Good diet, exercise, and sleep are very important for epileptics, even more than others.  If you are not eating well, exercising and sleeping 7.5-8 hours and you're feeling tired, your brain is foggy, or your're gaining weight, don't be too quick to blame the Lamictal as the single cause.  The lamictal could be agitating an pre-existing condition too!  I recommend that you try to improve your lifestyle first and then see how your body feels after that.  If you're still gaining weight, feeling foggy or scatterbrained, THEN I would recommend talking to your doctor.  It could be a medical problem agitated by the medication or God only knows but at least you did what you could for your body to protect yourself.

I wish you all the best.  Take care of yourselves.  You have to work harder than non-epileptics but the benefits outweight the effort.

Apmast, good for you!

It is always good advice for anyone to take control of his wellbeing by eating healthily, and getting exercise and sleep.  One might also add grooviness or spirituality or whatever one would like to call it, in order to include the emotional/mental side of our wellbing in the equation.  Nature, friendships, yoga, your kind of church, family, loving pets, community service -- really there are so many options for finding what brings our insides into alignment.  All such work helps the mind be its best self, which in turn can keep the body strong.

I hope you are eating organic, free range, no antibiotic foods as best you can.  I know sometimes they are pricey or hard to find.    However, as we all know, 'garbage in, garbage out.'  So 'non-garbage in, e.g. from happy chickens and frolicking animals, non-garbage results.'

Congrats on your success with this.

I have been on Lamictal for two years and I do not gain weight. The problem seems to be I am very tired between that and Mysoline. I cannot get off Mysoline without having more seizres.

Hi I'm taking Lamictal at the moment.  I was put on the medicine 5 years ago.  It is the only medicine I have been on.  I did experience weight gain, but I was able to lose it.  Tiredness isnt a major concern for me.  I don't really pay attention to that sort thing.  But it has been 5 years, so I might have adapted to dealing with it.

I'm still taking Lamictal, and from what I've been reading here about the side effects from it, I realize I'm experiencing more side effects from Lamictal than the seizure control I seemed to have on Dilantin. My memory is horrible and I seem to have more Gran Mal seizures. I think I'm going to talk to my Dr about it and tell him about the ups and downs I get from Lamictal and being tired all the time. I know he switched me from Dilantin to Lamictal because of the effects on my gums from Dilantin. I'm willing to try something different if I can gain better control of my seizures. My family thinks I'm having fewer seizures on Lamictal than I was on Dilantin. I'm only taking Lamictal now, and I hate the memory loss I have on Lamictal. Maybe I just need to find a different drug altogether. My family is not liking the fact I want to get off Lamictal because of the side effects. They think I'm having better control on it than I was on Dilantin. I know I wasn't taking care of myself the way I should have been when the switch was made, but I didn't have the memory and sleep problems I am now. The med game is just a crap shoot anyway. Some drugs work for some but they don't work for others and vice versa.

Hello! I also take Lamictal, and it seems to make my scalp dry. It also makes me gain weight, I think it's because of this med. expect the doctors, and pharmacy deny this reaction. Has nothing to do with the med. I know my body, as I'm sure everybody esle feels the same. I have had seizures for 32 yrs. now. So I have taken many different med. throughout these years, and I have either gained weight or losed it plus the other reactions included. I feel like a baloon, either I'm blown up with air, or plain flat with the lose of it, so I know it has to do with all the meds I take even though they tell me different.
