Keppra,side effects and behavior issues

My daughter is 8 yo and was diagnosised with Benign Rolandic Epilepsy this summer. The neuro put her on Keppra 100mg and I was told of the side effects of sleeplessness, agitation, agression etc. Since we started this medication the things my daughter use to enjoy and look forward to she will almost have like a panic attack when it comes to the event. She has spent at least 1-2 days a week in the principal's office and even calls from girl scout meetings that she can't be controlled and won't listen anymore. She is not the same child since using this medication. I am at my wit's end on what to do. Is anyone else having issues like this since starting medication, esp Keppra? Did you say anything to the neuro regarding this and what did they say? Any comments, etc is GREATLY appreciated!

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

I've had grand mail seizures for about 8 years, but until Sept 8, 2007, I was treating them homeopathically, with herbal tinctures I made from Black Cohosh and Lobelia. This worked pretty well, but I would still have about a seizuire a year. With no treatment at all I have a seizure every few months. I finally consented to get on conventional anti-seizure meds on 9/8/07, because during the last few episodes when I had seizures, I had a number of them. In the first hours of Sept. 8, I had a seizure and kept having them again and again until they almost killed me. By the time the ambulance got to my house I had stopped breathing. I am now on Keppra and Dilantin (which I'm gradually phazing off).

I have noticed that I've been very angry most of the time since I've been on Keppra, and my poor wife and 5 year old daughter bear the brunt of it. I feel as if the drug is making me a bitter, unlikable person. I'm trying hard not to let that happen.

I have been doing a better job of controlling my anger as the weeks go on and always keep my cool when my daughter is around, but since I've been on Keppra have said some very hateful things and words to my wife which I am quite ashamed of.

One morning while on my way to catch the city bus, I almost started a fight with a motorist who wasn't going to stop for me at the crosswalk a few blocks from my home. I stepped right in front of his car while pointing to the crosswalk lines and he had to slam his brakes to not hit me. As I was walking across the street, he let his car gradually move forward to scare me and I flipped him off. He said "I'll kick your a**, b***h," and I responded by putting up my fists and saying "Bring it on motherf****r! I'll kill your a**." This is very unlike me. I am not a violent person. The only people I've ever had physical fights with in all my life are my twin brother and a few bullies who wouldn't stop bothering me in junior high school. Fortunately, I think this guy had to get to work, so he drove on. I am also taking B12 Supplements to help and my anger issues seem to be lessening, but I try to always keep myself "in check" before responding to things that trouble me.

Another thing I don't like about Keppra is being tired all the time, which contributes to my general grumpiness. I do like that I haven't had any seizures since being on it, though, and will work hard not to let its bad side effects take control of me.

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

hi all...happened to read this thread to understand what i am going through. I was diagnosed with JME when I was 10 years old and was on depakote for nearly 25 years. I switched to Keppra when I was planning to get pregnant. Blessed with two wonderful super kids and loving husband and respectable job, I cant ask more. But I am always depressed, irritable, angry, frustrated and what not. I am tired most of the time though less sleepy than depakote. I try not to show my irritability on my kids but fail to do sometimes. mood swings are uncontrollable and many times makes me think about suicide. I am a medical person and I try to get the situation under control. Though keppra controls seizures, these behavioural problems are horrible. I try to withdraw myself from everyone, this loneliness again makes me depressed. this goes in circles and I am very confused, especially it is tough to handle a 4 yr old and 1 yr old with this mental status..friends..put in your advice

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

I have been on Keppra before a couple different times now. Recently like you I was on Depakote ER for about 8 years and had to switch because it started giving me chest pains for some reason.

Taking a Vitamin B-6 supplement with the Keppra will help your moods a ton. At least it did for me! When I was on it before and not taking the B-6 I was a irritable, angry mess.

Keppra and anger

I am on Keppra and like Kent I feel angry most of the time and say things to people I wish I hadn't said. It works pretty well but I'm not seizure-free.   I'm not tired in the daytime, but I have a hard time waking up in the morning and have heard others say the same. Mostly I hate being angry and irritable.

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

I am taking Keppra now and it sux.   I have mood swings and depression that I never had before on Trileptal.   I was changing from the Trileptal due to blurred vision and I was still having seizures but I think that the Keppra is WAY worse!!   I would rather have seizures....  Waiting for the Dr to call me back right NOW to get off this stuff !!!!    Good luck !

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

Lori,

My 10 year old son has been on Keppra for a year and a half now. He takes 250 mg in the am and 500 in the pm to control his seizures from BRE. We also give him Vitamin B Complex to help with the side effects and it seems to help a lot. We give him one pill in the am with breakfast. We have started giving him coromega fish oil as well for his brain function. The keppra caused some stomach problems so we give him aloe vera juice for that. Magnesium in the pm for relaxation and better sleep. My son also has panic like attacks. Today he is with my wife at her place of work which he always enjoys and he is having these bouts of panic. Thinks he has to vomit or have BM. Sweaty, and agitated. Stomach ache and just uncomfortable. This happened quite a bit at the movies theatres as well and in noisy restaurants and my daughters basketball games a couple times. I feel so sorry for him. Please email with anymore info you may have. wyboemail@yahoo.com

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

Same here.... I am so upset... Nervous.... and not sure what to do. My Son, now 8, was diagnosed with a seizure disorder - GEF+ which the Dr. believe he should outgrow. First we put him on Depakote - didn't work for him. Then, he was on 5ml Keppra twice a day and 1/2 teaspoon liquid B6. It worked at the beginning for about 8 months (although I definitely felt a big change in his sweet behavior - more aggressive, easily agitated), at the beginning he was on Brand name, but due to insurance pressure we changed to generic. It worked fine for a while but then a week ago it stopped working. He had so many absence seizures during the day. We had to switch medication. We tried Topmax, he got a rush all over and looked as if he was drunk and out of it. He had loss of memory and a real tough time remembering any basic math facts and Seizures continued. I even asked him for his birthday, and he couldn't tell me. We took him off and now he is back on the Keppra, Brand name this time, 9ml twice a day. It seems like the seizures are almost completely gone, but his behavior is out of control! please help... we are running out of options. I AM SO STRESSED OUT!!

Re: Keppra, side effects and behavior issues

I have partial seizures and have been on Keppra for 3 years now.  It was a tough transition for me.  Tegretol worked well for over 20 years until it gradually quit working.  Finding a new anticonvuslant was tough.  Lots of trial and error that I'm sure you can all relate to.  After going through Keppra (gave me insomnia), Topomax (made me euphoric), Lamictal (gave me myoclonus and made me severely depressed), Zonagran (made me severely depressed), Trileptal (didn't help), I tried Keppra again. We mixed it with clonazepam (which was horrible to get off of a year later) and Neurontin so I could sleep.  I eventually ended up on a pretty low dose of Keppra XR (1000 mg) that I take early in the morning, a high quality vitamin B complex, and 300 mg Neurontin in the morning, 100 mg Neurontin in the afternoon, and 100 mg Neurontin at night.  1500 mg Keppra (which I had been on) made me so agitated they gave me an EKG to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack.  I am naturally an anxious person, and the Keppra pushed me over the edge.  I was incredibly anxious and wanted to crawl out of my skin. That made me respond with anger.  I'm 135 lb, and the doctor figured I could try 1000 mg Keppra.  It works like a charm, but I have to have the B complex and Neurontin.  The neurontin makes me a little stupid, but it eliminates the panic that the Keppra causes.  Having had seizures since 1984, I can tell you, without a doubt, that brand name vs. generic DOES matter.  I have a great pharmacy.  They made sure that my generic always came from the same lab.  It didn't matter.  One month it would work, two months later it wouldn't.  We'd switch to another manufacturer, and go through the same thing.  I'm not saying that brand name is perfect, but it is (in my experience) more consistent than generic.  Clearly my dose is close to the minimum that will work for me, so when the medication is at all light on the active ingredient, I can feel it.  Hang in there.  Try the B complex.  Perhaps an add on of something calming like Neurontin might work.  I have found that as long as the Keppra is controlling the seizures, it's probably worth trying to find something that will make it tolerable.  An effective anticonvulsant can be hard to find.

 I'll pray for you!
