Assistance? Social Security Disability?

I am wondering if any of you have ever applied for SSI for your children? If so, did you get it? If not, why not? Does anyone know if Epilepsy qualifies for it?? I am just trying to find any sort of assistance for us to help take care of my daughter. The only hospital with an Epilepsy Unit doesn't take our insurance or even see children for that matter. So we travel to St Louis when needed for Kaitlyn and it is 8 1/2 hours away. It's tough. Anyone know of anything that might help?

We applied for Hayden's SSI about 3 months ago. We should hear something within the next month. Epilepsy does qualify for SSI, so does some developmental delays. You can go to ssa.gov and there is a list there of all of the qualifying conditions for SSI. It also depends on your income but it is worth a shot to try for it. I will let you know when we recieve our response.

Hugs:)

My son is not eligible for SSI because we make too much money but he receives Medicaid under the Disabled Child Living at Home program (aka Katie Beckett Program). It is based strictly on whether or not your child is considered disabled and not based on income. Contact your regional Medicaid office for more information!

Oh, and we have private insurance, too. Medicaid pays what our insurance does not. It has been a blessing.

Thank you!! I will have to contact them too... Our insurances covers a lot but the co-pays and medicines start to take a toll on us after awhile.... $50 for an ER visit, or $50 for one medicine....

Hi Kaitlynsmom,

I'm sorry to hear about Kaitlyn's E. I'm 41 and was just put in for Disability. My Neuro put me in for it after he found out how long I had been out of work. In my case, it was a letter from my Dr recommending me for Disability that got the ball rolling. Talk to your daughter's Dr, and see if they can get the ball rolling for you. I still have the usual gov't paperwork shuffle to go through, but at least the ball is rolling. Like I said, I didn't have anything going until I received a letter from my Dr. Good luck, I know how hard it is on my part, it must be a nightmare with a young child trying to deal with Epilepsy.
