I had a full blown grand mal convulsion on my way home from my boyfriends house yesterday - thank god I let him drive! I won't be driving for a while now after that! I'd been cleared to drive and everything! I'm on 200mgs of lamictal a day so how the hell could I have had a grand mal?!!! It's not that time of the month, I haven't missed a tablet and nothing happened out of the ordinary - what the f***?!!!

I've been on Lamictal for 6 years and hadn't experienced many of the side effects until a couple of weeks ago. My doctor decided to increase my dose from 150mg 2xs/day to 200mg 2xs/day, so I'm hoping that everything will be fine. I do understand your frustration, though. Good luck!
I am sorry you had a Grand Mal. Unfortunately, I have been having Grand Mals as of late too. 4 of them since February & I take 225mg's of Lamictal AND .25mg's of Clonazepam (Klonopin). So, I'm in the same boat with you. I don't understand why the hell it's happening either! It's very upsettingwhen you're getting close to the end of that 6 month restriction for driving.....then BAM! Another seizure! It's like you can't even take a step forward before you're taking a step back. I understand exactly how you feel.......

i'm sorry that lamictal isnt working for you maybe you should talk to you doctor and see about changing it. the only thing is before you were on lamictal how may seizures were you having? also did you doctor slowly put you on this med or start you at 200 mgs and how long have you been taking it?
i have had JME since i was in 5th grade and i have been on depakote it worked for me well but i hated the taste. so i asked to change he started me on lamictal, but because he was slowly taking me off depakote and on lamictal it cause me problems and well i was hospitalized for 3 weeks.
come to find out at my new doctor said i should have never been on either at that age i guess both med's are for adults (18 and up) hopefully you are not taking this med as a teen.
i know that i was very angery growing up...
i wrecked my car having an absence seizure because i thought it was my right to drive and i did alot of stupid things.
i guess what i'm getting at is if you need to talk and get some anger out i can listen. i can also relate to alot of things.
Other factors can influence your vulnerability and trigger seizures, some external: tiredness, visual (bright lights/flickering of -), hormones – among others. For myself, the main trigger that I have become aware of over the years is dehydration which can be easy not to notice - unlike thirst.

(as it happens, I am also taking 200mg/day Lamictal)
I've heard this thing about flickering lights bothering epileptics such as myself, and I've noticed that some off-time, irregularly flashing lights affect me such as floresant bulbs drive me crazy. I lived in the city of flashing lights, Las Vegas, NV for 11 years, and the lights on Las Vegas Blvd. never bothered me. For me, it's only the floresant lights with a 'bad' flicker that are a problem. After replacing a bulb with a 'flicker', it doesn't bother me.
I take 1025mg of Lamictal per day. I am also on 2000mg of Keppra a day. I am fortunate to only have partial-complex seizures and not grand-mal. My seizures have decreased tremendously, but I still have break through seizures, and then of course, my meds get bumped up. I do have bad side effects of weight gain, mood swings, extreme tiredness, etc. I do not know if it is one of the meds, both meds, or sometimes I wonder if it is stress that is causing me to have seizures and the side effects. I am just ready for some answers. I go sometime within the next month or two for depth electrodes. Maybe that will tell me something.
Hi Pan,
re: "I am fortunate to only have partial-complex seizures and not grand-mal."
I had simple and (mostly) complex partials since very early childhood and my entire life I was told I was "lucky" I didn't have grand mal seizures.
While the outer show others see when someone has a tonic clonic seizure (once called'grand mal') doesn't occur with complex partials, what people having complex partials and those having tonic clonic seizures experience is almost identical.
In both cases the person having the seizure is completely unaware at the time the seizure occurs until they 'find themself' after the event is over when they have no idea what happened. Fear & depression are not uncommon to people having both types of seizures.
Moreover, there are some people who have tonic clonic seizures just once per year while there are also those with complex partials that seize every day, so it's inappropraite to think one situation is worse just via the type of seizure.
All types of seizures can have an enormous psychological effect.
Glad to hear your seizures have decreased and best wishes with the upcoming depth electrodes.
Hi rose,
re: "shouldn't lamictal stop seizures"
Sometimes after taking AEDs for awhile they stop working.
Yes I had it happen to me also.
I had been 100& controlled for a decade when ,despite not forgetting any meds, I suddenly began to have seizures again.
This sudden change is often referred to as 'developing a tolerance' or 'the honeymoon effect' depending on the drugs that were being taken at the time.
Hope this article helps:

Wow, that's awful...I have been taking 100mg of Lamictal for several months now with no seizures but the side effects have been so bad (mood swings, weight gain, etc.) that I'm getting off of it and back on to Topamax, which also worked for me in terms of seizures. Have you tried it? The only problem for me with Topamax was low electrolytes--I didn't realize that was the source off my side effects with it until I was already off of it, and it looks like that can be taken care of with supplements. Hope you find something that works better for you.
Different meds work for different people; sometimes it takes a few together; I take 600mg of Lamictal & 3kmg of Keppra and it helps for the most part aside from the yearly breakthough. Good luck finding the right combo; it's out there.

I recently started on Lamictal. I take 100mgs in the morning, and 200 at bedtime. I have been experiencing almost a "buzz" feeling when I take 200mgs. My Dr says it's normal, and I'll adjust to it. He had me on 200mgs in the mornings for the first week (Last week) and that was when I was really getting that buzz feeling. Now that my dosage has decreased, I'm hoping that the buzz feeling will go away. I'm just curious if anyone else is getting this 'buzz' feeling from Lamictal? How much are you taking?
