Take control of your epilepsy and seizures. Seizure management has never been easier.
TAKE CONTROL TODAYHello,
I've had epilepsy for 10 year. I had 7 seizures without warning and with direct loss of consiousness. Thanks to medication I've been free of seizures for 7 years until last week.
Unlike the earlier seizures I felt it coming for about half an hour and didn't lose consiousness. Because I'd reduced my medication the doctor assumed that was the problem and the dose was increased.
Since then I've been experiencing what seem to be sensory simple partial seizures, which last for hours/days. Tingling, numbness, pain, heat, cold of left arm, left leg and tongue. I manage the odd day without any strange sensations at the most.
Has anyone here got any experience in this matter they could share. I'll be speaking to my doctor on friday.
I'd be greatfull for any information as I'm having difficulty sleeping, expecting the next full seizure to come any time.
Thanks,
Ian

I'm sorry to hear that you are having such trouble. There are times that I am also afraid to go to sleep at night, because I feel I could have a seizure in my sleep. I have been having alot of Simple Partial Seizures, lately, during the day and it causes fear and memory loss. I hate it. I hope you getting something to help control them better. Just recently I had a Vagus Nerve Stimulator implanted in my left part of my chest to help control them. I still need to get it turned on, but I hope it will help control these seizures. I believe the reason why I have some many during the day now is due to lack of sleep.
My partials happen a few times a day and usually last for 10-30 seconds. They range from "mild" pain and numbness (always starting in the same general area of my face) to overwhelming pain, twitching and the feeling that I'm on the edge of a grand mal seizure. Though I have them constantly, I have only had one grand mal in 8 years after missing a dose of the Tegretol. Because some seizure meds lose their effectiveness after a while, I'm in the process of switching to Lamictal. I would ask your doctor about this and also get your blood levels tested b/c those sensations can also be caused by some seizure meds, from what I understand. Good luck.
Hi Ian...
My comments may not help, but it's worth a read. I've been a seizure patient for 20 years and I still have simple partial seizures every so often. For example, 5 days ago, one came on with no warning and lasted for at least 20 minutes. I space out, can't talk and forget what I was doing and it takes awhile to recover even when I actually come out of it. Mine are always triggered by stress or something physical affecting my neck and back. I take a 4/4/5 med routine of Dilantin and 1/2 to 1 0.5mg of Ativan, which is a regiment I more or less put myself on. The other symptoms you mentioned sound like you are overdosing on your seizure med, so maybe there is a halfway point your doctor can prescribe. And you need to sleep, so ask your doctor about a very mild sedative for a limited time. Many people take a seizure med with Phenobarbital or something similar. I hope everything goes well for you!
Thanks for your reply,
My neurologist actually asked me what I thought might be the problem... but at least I've got an urgent appointment for coming wednesday.
On the Internet I've found two possible causes:
- aura continua, which is like a sensory simple partial seizure but can last between hours and weeks or even years.
- chronical hyperventilation which can induce seisures.
If anyone has any further thoughts please post them here. If I find out more I'll update.
I'd ,respectfully, suggest you search out an epileptologist (a neurologist that specializes in ,& focuses on, epilepsy), as that's the best chance of getting your E controlled asap.
