Does anyone know if there will be an generic brand of Topamax coming out any time in the near future? My daughter (21) has gotten great results from the brand Topamax but her new insurance won't pay for it so she's just stopped using it. She has focal seizures but also uses this to control her migraines. Needless to say her headaches have gotten out of control. I had read somewhere (but can't remember where) that a generic Topamax will be on the market sometime in the near future. If anyone has any information on this or knows where I can go to find out, please respond. Thanks for any help.

Generic Topomax came out in Canada in April of this year.
I tried it for 2 weeks & reacted horribly to it, so I'm still on the name brand. It costs more, but for me it's worth it.
Lisa in away is right above - the "active" drug is still the same, but they put different 'fillers' in generics. The 'fillers' in the generic for Topomax made me feel sick.
Just like for my clobazam I can't take glaxo's generic(it makes me sick) but with novopharm I'm OK.
If you're Canadian you can get it at Shopper's Drug Mart.

I think i started on the Generic topomax at about the same time as Erin did,, It seemed to work okay for me,,,,i had to have it increased after about 3 months i dont know if that was due to it being a genertic brand or just the seziure activiety getting worse.

I don't know if this helps you or not but I also use topamax and I couldn't afford to take it in the dosage that the doctor prescribed so I contacted the Ortho McNeil company that makes Topamax and they have a drug assistance program that if you qualify for they will send you the medicine for FREE. I get my medication for free now and am able to take the needed dosage for my seizures. without this help, I would have been lost as we didn't have any insurance. If you make below a certain income and qualify it's a great way to get this medication. Together RX is also a great place to get a discount on the medication. this was where i went before i went to ortho mcNeil. Hope this helps you a little and best of luck
hi new here I was reading about your takeing topomax , I am to do you have the number on how to get it for free I just got fired because I couldn't go back to work because of my , seizures and now I don't have Health Insurance and for they are giveing me problems abour giveing me cobra . please e-mail me and in subject put topomax

Topiramate received final approval for marketing in the US on
December 1996 and is labeled for use as an anticonvulsant.
Topamax was released 1995.

I myself get really bad migraines and my doctor put me on topamax. I have insurance but only have part time benefits and does not cover many of my medications and i can not afford my medication and would like to get the information on getting my medication cheeper if not free. Would greatly appreciate it. Thank you Carrie

I refer a lot of my clients there. I work with a disability advocacy group and a lot of the families I work with have no insurance and need numerous medications to manage their health. you can look up each drug by name and get information on the programs for free or reduced cost meds. best of luck!

Remember when there is brand and generic, you can have a total different reaction from a med. Sometimes they have different ingredients.
Make sure you talk with your doctor about the ingredience and the difference between the meds.

My son is 20. His first seizure was a year ago and so far hasn't had one since. The name brand Topamax makes him ill to his stomach. He rarely feels hungry and has lost 30 pounds. We were at the specialist yesterday and she said the generic should be available in the United States within the year. He lost his medical insurance so I applied for medcare (program to assist those who have life threatening situations to obtain medication, etc). He does qualify. It is a sliding scale application due to income. This is based on his income, excluding the parents'. The lady at Medcare (not medicaid or any of those programs), advised me she was told it would be available 9-1-08. Apparently, the availability date has been extended.
My comment about people going without this medication. There is help available. It is up to you to find it. I did for my son. Please, do much research and find out any assistance for those going without prevention medication. This is a life threatening condition and should not be down sided.
My neurologist told me that the generic form of topamax is soon to be in the US. He said that the week of the 15th while I was getting my VEEG done so it should be soon.

Generic for Topamax is Topiramate. You can get in International Drug Mart.
I started taking Topamax back in November 2008 for daily headaches and 2x a week migraines and since then everything has been under control. But then my pharmacy changed me to generic without my approval at all. After taking the generic for 10 days, my headaches were back and I was in terrible pain. I work in a pharmacy and I asked my pharmacist if switching to the generic could be the problem and he said yes. Another pharmacist told me that at one of her other stores, they switched many of the patients to generic. A LOT of them came back complaining that their headaches had come back since being on the generic Topamax. I'm going back on the brand. I would NOT reccomend switching to the generic if you have had good results with the brand. I knows it's expensive (I pay $40 a month for the brand) but if it works for me, it's worth it.
