Hello! I'm just curious for anyone who's on this wonderful medication of Topamax what their dosage is and when their neuro has them taken it. Reading some of your posts I already see all various responses. Personally my neuro has me on 150mg of 75 in the morning and 75 at night. (which I know probably seems low to a lot of you)... But I find that I wake up feeling fine in the morning and as soon as I take the meds I'm groggy, tired, and drained all day. I want to call my neuro and ask if I can take more or all at night and less in the morning so I can have a more productive day. For long term use, I would like to be on the lowest dosage possible. I've been seizure free thankfully for almost five months so I know the meds are working, I just wish I could function better so I could return to the working world. Thanks for your responses!!!

I am currently in the process of switching from 750 mg of Depakote ER each to 100 mg of Topomax each day. With 750 mg of Depakote ER, I was seizure free for about 7-8 years. I am switching because my husband and I want start a family. So far, the 100 mg of Topomax each day (50 mg in the morning and 50 mg at night) is okay for me. I haven't had any problems so far. In a week, I am going to have an EEG done and some blood to see if the dosage should be increased.
I have had epilepsy since I was 12 years old and I am now 25 years old. I have had 3 grand mal seizures and if I forget to take my meds I tend to get petit mal seizures.
I AM 28 AND HAVE HAD SEIZURES SINCE I WAS 17. TWO YEARS AGO I BECAME PREGNENT WITH MY SON I WAS ON 450MG OF DILIANTION AT THE TIME THE DOCTOR SAID IT WAS NOT A GOOD DRUG TO BE ON WHILE YOU ARE PREGNENT. SO SHE SWICHED ME TO TOPMAX. WELL I DID NOT AGREE WITH THAT MEDICANE. I WAS FALLING AND MY SEIZURES GOT WORSE. EVERYONE ELSE SAIDS IT IS A REALLY GOOD DRUG I JUST COULD NOT TAKE IT......
Hey Allison,
I have worked up to 300 mg of Topamax over the past 3 months. (100 morning, 200 at night which I can adjust with 50mgs at a time if concentration becomes an issue). I originally began treatment to manage migraine headaches (which are doing a bit better, but I'll probably be worked up to 400 mg soon), but during all my MRIs and EEGs found out I was actually having small seizures and that topamax could control that too...added bonus.
I'm pretty happy with topamax, although about 2 of the past 3 months have been spent getting used to it, and my body is still adjusting. My headaches are better and i've been able to detox off alot of really heavy painkillers. I lost 20 pounds in 2 months which is fine by me, but i am down to 110 now and getting tired of people asking me if i'm eating enough.
I've had problems with concentration, mixing up words, simple organization, etc. I go to the wrong classrooms, blank out on professors names, work on a paper for 10 hours and forget to turn it in. However, I've learned to over-plan and over-manage things and I've found that it just takes being really smart to be on stupi-max most days. My brother is in a similar situation - lost 22 pounds in 2 weeks, sleeps all day. His neuro has put him on Paxil (anti-depressant) simply to gain weight. However, like me, he used to spend hours in bed in a dark room 6 days a week in pain, and pretty much any side effect is worth relief from that. Topamax has my vote.
I am taking 1.75mg of Topomax twice a day (morning and night) for 5 years. I initially lost 45 lbs, was down to 105lbs, and have managed to gain about 10-15lbs back. I also take it with 675mg 2x/day of Sodium Divalproex. When I started taking these, I was extremely tired and couldn't function, it's been 5 years and things hve gotten alot better. I am still tired and but I've decided that I've had to take the time to ensure I rest when necessary to keep myself from getting worn out. It annoys my family, but the consequences are worse. Be patient.
on 175 mg - topomax takes awhile to adjust to and i would suggest increasing or decreasing dosages in weekly intervals to give your mind and body time to adjust or bi-weekly if YOU feel that long is necessary. My neurologist gave me the flexibility to increase and decrease as I felt I could handle the medication.
KARDSHARQUE,Topamax did a job on me. It could of had to do with taking a total of 4 meds but I looked up some of the side affects and quit it on my own. I will always be mad at that dr. for not listening.
Well, When I was on Topamax the higher the dose the dopier I felt but it controlled my seizures. I did not feel tired but my memory recall was very slow. I take keppra and at first that made me very tired but I feel fine on that. I notice patients that I see and people on Topamax have memory issues while on it.
It has been prescibed by diet Dr's now for weight loss and that is a little scary to me. I know a few on it at higher doses than what I took and they are dingy as ever thin but dingy and they were not prior to topamax.

I was on 400 mg a day 200 morning and 200 at night. everyone hated me i was a different person and lost 60 pounds all because of topomax. Since ive been off it ive been much better and only gained 10 pounds back.
Thanks, I've only lost about 10 pounds so far., nothing too noticeable. I just find that the lower I go on the meds, the better I feel... but my family has noticed my moods etc.. too! thanks again for the input!
hello. I take 200mg at night and I feel drained and so tired all the time. I guess it just depends on the person. Good luck.

I've taken Topamax for 7 years and it has been one of the best! I take 300mg. 2x a day. After taking most of the anticonvulsants made and never having complex partials controlled the doctors have figured I have a speedy maetabolism that is finally slowing down as I get older. Lord willing my seizures will too. Always remember there is a pet name for Topamax..."dopamax".
I have been on topamax for 3 months now 2 months for 100mg am and pm recently i have had to up the dose and am working up to 200 am and pm. My body seems to process all drugs at an accellerated rate.. lucky me. I did not loose very much rate nor did i have much of a mood swing... it did make me a bit happier..people liked that. It did stop all my seizures till i proccessed it to fast and had to up the dose i hope that does not happen again.
I have been on topamax for almost 5 years. I think my dosage is very high. Currently, I am on 250mg in the AM and 300mg in the PM. I am 30 weeks pregnant. I had one gran mal at 12 weeks and dislocated my shoulder for the second time. I had not had a seizure for 2 years before I had that one.
