alcohol and simple-partial seizures

i was diagnosed two years ago with simple-partial seizures and have been on 150mg lamictal twice a day since then. the thing is, i never had anything past a simple-partial and they happened pretty infrequently, maybe 5 per year. i see many people on this board inquiring about alcohol and seizure disorders, but its seems like many of these people have grandmal seizures, not my condition. i was just wondering whether the risk of having a seizure (if you've only had simple-partials) while drinking maybe 4 or 5 beers is increased as much as it is for people that have more severe seizures than i do.

James Polaro Hey I looked on here to see whats going on with teenagers these days with epilepsy. I am not a teenager I am 31 years old. I got diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 15 years old. I have always had petit mal seizures. Never had a grand mal in my life. My doctor always told me never to drink alcohol with my medication or I could die. I didn't believe him so I continued to drink for years and became an alcoholic. I am in recovery now and haven't drank in over 1 year. But let me tell you this over the years I have had a few friends who drank with having epilepsy and they died at a very young age. Do not drink alcohol with having epilepsy. Evenif it is one seizure a year. Not a good combination if you want to llive. Well if you or anyone else wants to chat about this or anything else email me at jpolaro@mail.nysed.gov

The question is not whether alcohol will give you seizures. From what ive learned about epilepsy its the reaction with you medication that will give you a GRAND mal seizure. It not smart to mix alcohol with seizures meds. even when taking cough sirup you have to be careful. but drinking a can of beer IS VERY DANGEROUS depending on your medication. If i drink alcohol with my Keppra my doc said there is a high chance i could die bc of the med and alcohol combination. i dont drink, and dont plan to. best thing buddy is to stay away from alcohol and talk to your doc about the reactions with your medication and alcohol. : ) best of luck.

Hi, I have simple and complex partial seizures, and for me, yes, alcohol can be a definite trigger. Even a slight amount of alcohol can bring on a seizure for me. There is also the possibility of alcohol interfering with your seizure meds. I would definitely talk to your doctor about this, and get their thoughts. I have simple partial seizures and also am on Lamictal. Alcohol definitely has an effect on the way I feel physically and psychologically. My neurologist set a 2 drink a day limit for me - which I'm admittedly not able to always stick to. When I do overdo it, I can't sleep, have terrible headaches the following day, see spots, feel dizzy, and lose my short term memory. my advice: take it easy on the booze.

Seizures could be a result of marijuana usage did you ever thought about that or considered Drug Treatment ?

Hi docta_j. Accidents happen, but bear in mind please I'm no expert, nor a drinker either! Just I have teens, and once read that the relationship of alcohol to epilepsy and seizures is complex, and I don't think they meant a partial instead of a complex seizure either LOL. My own opinion is I just think it's up to each and every individual to decide what suits them. Any worries adults have around issues with epilepsy are best discussed with their doctor if that's possible. The doctor should listen to those worries. Teens with worries over seizures or alcohol consumption, could think about discussions with their parents about it. Is it possible for you to do that, share your thoughts on it with them as well as us. Or is there maybe a communication problem? Anyway, back to your thoughts on this. From the reading I have done already (just on this site alone) a suggestion is to read the personal stories at the side of the links.I did and for me it was those stories told in posts. Stories about the nature of relationships, impact of epilepsy on the teen that made me shake my head when I read them and your post. http://www.epilepsy.com/info/family_teens_drugs.html http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/provoke_alcohol.html http://www.epilepsy.com/info/family_teens_relationship.html

Hi docta_j, no doubt about it, alcohol can be a sz trigger. My E started from seizures caused by alcohol withdrawl. I was downing 5-6 beers a day. As you sober up, especially while sleeping, you're much more prone to sz. I'm on 300mg lamictal a day myself. I don't drink anymore. I balance drinking a bit against a possible sz, and the beers loose. Hope this helps, one always has to decide for themself. Peace- cc

Am very sorry about your problem.I knew that alchol and seizure disorder can affect  our career, relationships with family and
friends, and most importantly, self-esteem and self-confidence.We  have  good news that mostly 80% of people are overcome by this disorder. There are medicians available in the Market.I guess you can go with that.

Hi, I was diagnosed with Partial Complex when I was 5 years old and I was on Tegretol XR until I was 18-I had my first drink at 18 and at that point I was on 800mg a day, 400 AM 400 PM (way over medicated, however I had been seizure free for 4 years at that point) and when I drank I didn't think I felt anything right away but once I did (after probably 5 drinks) I definitely had increased side effects. If anyone is on that, I would DEFINITELY advise AGAINST drinking, at least over-drinking.

Now I am in college and on 200mg Topamax & 100 Lamictal AM, and 100 Topamax 100 Lamictal PM (soon to be bringing down the topamax) and I am 21, prior to this year I never went over 2 drinks and would only feel slightly buzzed until I took my meds and i would quickly sober up.

I drink a little more now, however I try not to drink more than one per hour, and when I take my meds at the end of the night I still begin sober up, but I would never take my meds then continue to drink.

I know that's a bit of a different reaction from yours but maybe it helps in a way?

The risk of having seizure (especially in your case) while drinking alcohol can definitely increase. I would suggest not taking any chances. Moreover, seeking an expert advice is always advisable. You can call toll free helpline number: 800-708-4156 or go to http://www.drugabuse.com/ for more information on this.

I think any doctor would suggest you to be cautious with alcohol. Your seizures are not severe but that doesn't mean you should have a loose diet. Alcohol does comes with some risks, I don't think you are at risk of addiction, your condition wouldn't allow it but you should pay attention to any alcohol intake.

Alcohol is definitely a seizures trigger. Proper medication can help patients to eradicate seizures or epilepsy. But one should not take alcohol while he is under medication. Alcohol is not the solution of any problem in life. So in interest of your own life say no to alcohol.
