I was on Topomax from the middle of 2004 until March of 2006. I now have no memory of 2005. Short term memory loss is very scary. Topomax did nothing for my seizures. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone, epilepsy or migrains.

Recently I have learned that TOPAMAX CAN CAUSE KIDNEY STONES ! Interestingly enough, not a single one of FOUR PHYSICIANS - ONE OF THEM BEING A UROLOGIST - who saw and/or treated my son for kidney stones was aware of this fact, as they never mentioned it, even though they had a list of every drug he was taking. When I mentioned the fact that my son recently had kidney stones to the doctors at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital during our first consultation with them - they were able to tell me about the connection between kidney stones and Topamax right away ! I just thought I would post this here to save someone else the trouble of finding out the way we did, and to alert people to this in case they begin experiencing unexplained abdominal and back pain, and are taking Topamax. I just checked the Topamax site listed on a previous posting on this site, and it does mention kidney stones as a side effect, however unlike the other information related to this - my son never previously had kidney stones, and he was not taking any of the other meds listed there as causing kidney stones when used in conjunction with Topamax. Another problem my son experienced years ago, that the doctors did not pick up on as a side effect of a seizure med, was that a RARE SIDE EFFECT OF DEPAKOTE IS NOCTURNAL ENURESIS, (BED WETTING). My son wet the bed at night until he was 16, (he's 23 now) and nothing we tried helped. The last dose he took of Depakote was the last time he wet the bed. We mentioned this to the new neurologist we were seeing back then who took my son off the Depakote (for unrelated reasons), and he confirmed that this was an effect of the Depakote, but a rare one.

I have been on topomax for 4 years now (200 mg). I am 47 years old. I had kidney stones 2 years ago and was hospitalized. NO ONE connected it with my medications. (I take a few more) I stumbled on this site looking how to withdrawal from it and hoping I won't gain weight. I have bipolar disorder. I also have been to doctors with severe abdominal cramps and lower back pain which comes and goes and I was thinking it was this medication! Thank you for your posting. Oh, and I have very, very severe fatigue where I couldn't even move and the doctors told me it was just my bipolar disorder! Also, I have had some hair breakage at certain times of the year, but I take a good multivitamin and calcium with vitamin D to hopefully prevent bone loss since I also went through menopause 3 years ago. I color my hair, too and it appears healthy. I have heard of this happening to young children and was told it was some kind of disorder. Maybe try a dermatologist? Any one out there can tell me what happens when you get off the topomax?

I tried Topamax twice and my body could not handle it, even at low doses, I was ill tempered, I was highly confused and couldnt even get out bed and function, and I am a working proffessional that needs a clear head and to be able to speak in order to function in my position. I also had severe migraines, and the minute that I stopped trying to crossover onto this "med" and stayed with my old one I was fine. Although, however my old one is killing me slowly (literally), it is Depakote aka Valproic Acid. I have gained so much wieght and I am losing my hair like I am taking chemo. My whole lifes on hold except for my career and school. But, I am planning on trying all the meds until I hit paydirt (the one that best suits My body chemistry)........MY ADVICE TO ALL OF YOU, IS NEVER EVER GIVE UP!!!! IT ONLY MAKES US STRONGER!!!! WHAT DOESNT KILL ME JUST MAKES ME STRONGER!!!! I just want to say that we may be a little different, but we arent social freaks or monsters. And the people that treat us as such are the freaks and monsters because they are the ones that are ignorant, and lack sensitivity training. They are purely ignorant. Also, remember if we have seizures in public, at work, etc. who cares dont be embarrassed, it is apart of us....just like being a heart patient and having a heart attack at work.

I'm with you all the way there robvan93 on each and every point. Every med has it's side effects and the lists are all as long as our arms. Unfortunately epilepsy is a no better choice than that. I would describe Topamax as a "dread med" myself. I'm on 400mg per day. Each pharmacist I use as I move towns has to order it in specially for me in that high a dose. It takes my appetite down to zero. Food is repulsive. I would rather throw my food to the dog than eat it. For anyone with this problem, all I can recommend is a cognitive approach. "I can compell my muscles and limbs to act rightly in spite of my feelings." "My feelings will get better as my habits of thinking and acting get better." "Feelings are not facts." and "Reason must prevail." EAT EAT EAT. Regardless of the side effects. Before Topamax, I was status epilepticus and clinically dead twice. Four other times I could have died in seizure related accidents, all within six months. There is no perfect medication. If only there was a perfect case of epilepsy. If it doesn't kill you it makes you stronger. If it kills you, it will probably be non-compliance. John

I've been on Topamax almost 3 years, and it works great for my seizures; one of the few drugs that does work well. Causes me some confusion and forgetfulness, but overall, I have few complaints. The printout of ALL the possible side effects on the Ortho-McNeill website can be pretty frightening, but I think that's cause they have to list ALL possibilities. My biggest complaint is that it can sometimes make me short-tempered; however, I'm on it at high doses, and it's been 3 years. I don't know that most people would have that problem. I'm also under a lot of stress anyway. I think it's a drug that works really well. Hope you do well with it! sophie

Got the fact sheet from the makers of Topomax? Frightening to be sure. But for me, my extremely low dose is the perfect suppliment to my Tegertol and helps the complex partials and mirgrane prevention. I can't take a higher dose of Tegertol, the weight gain would kill me, I've already lost the ongoing weight battle. I've not been able to take most meds and many are way too strong for my condition. It helps keep me at work and since I'm not considered disabled, survival, not side effects are my major concern.

sparrow123 Is there a medication that you WON't gain weight? I'm allergic to Topomax (and from what I've read its a good thing. I'm so sick of the FOG HEAD, staggering around, dizziness and MOST OF ALL -- THE EATING!!!!!!!! Help me stop.

I've Complex Partial LTL Seizures and an just coming off Topomax now.Make that the 10th drug I've tried with no luck. Topomax is notorious for making people lose their word retrieval. It was bad enough that I had to live in persistant fear that a seizure would occur. On Topomax I couldn't even remember the names of the streets in my own neighbourhood. Never mind the fact that it didn't stop my seizures... so it wasn't worth the grief.

My experience with Topomax landed me in the hospital…  I lost my memory, my health, almost lost my eyesight.  I nearly lost my home and my job.  I even forgot how to dial a phone.  It has taken 4 years to recover most of my physical health.  Now comes the hard part…  Emotional health.  Speaking from my own experience….  Be wary, be very very wary…By the way, the seizures continued.

I now have a new physician, new medication (Keppra and Lamictal) and I have been seizure free for 20 months.  I am one happy person and it is my personal goal to laugh and have fun every day.

I was put on Topomax in 2/08 for bipolar illness, mood swings.  I began having episodic diarrhea, could not eat anything, it became worse and I went to ER and to my GP who treated me for sinus infections as I was having intense throbbing behind my eyes, migraines, nausea and cold sweats.  Finally, I ended up in the hospital a week ago and my blood was tested, I was given a CT Scan and Ultrasound.  The doctors first thought I had Pancreatitis as my enzyme levels were high but lowered in one day and they could not diagnose my illness.  I had been also given a shot of cortisone due to allergies which the doctors at my GP felt were causing the headaches so my metabolism is all screwed up.  I stopped taking the Topomax as I tried to remember what had changed when these episodes began and that was all I could remember was being put on Topomax. I have contacted the Dr. who put me on it and he will not return my calls, The GP told me I was lucky to figure it out!  I cannot get any of these doctors to assist me in ensuring no damage has been done to my organs such as glaucoma which runs in my family and I have liver disease and I read that you should not take Topomax if you have liver disease.  I have been in pain, to doctors who did not help me and suffered financial and emotional and physical pain.  I thought you should know.

I just quit taking Topomax after 4 years and have switched to Trileptal.  Within a year and a half of taking Topomax, I got my first attack of Pancreatitis and was hospitalized for 2 1/2 weeks.  I kept getting attacks of pancreatitis almost every 6 months.  I was told by doctors that pancreatitis was caused by heavy drinking, but I kept telling them I only seldom dring. Finally after getting a new doctor with Kaiser did he go over all my medications and find that topomax has be causing pancreatitis in some people.  He and my neurologist decided it would be best to get me off the topomax and on something else.  I't taken me about 6 months to do this medication change and I'm still having abdominal and back pain flare ups (actually as I'm writing this), but they do seem to be getting a little bit better...at least I'm staying out of the hospital.  I have had 5 bouts of pancreatitis in the last 4 years and let me tell you, this is NO FUN!!! If you take topomax and have unexplained abdominal and back pain frequently, I urge you to talk to your doctor about changing medications. It could become pancreatitis, and you dont want to mess with this!!!! IT SUCKS!!!

Chris ...

The Day After Thanksgiving my father committed suicide by stabbing himself. One of the medications that he was on was Topomax. My father was a devout Catholic since the age of 13. He died at 66. He had just started on this medication and Kepra for drop seizures in Sept. right after Labor day weekend. My family is devasted - we believed in the doctors and I wish I would have come to this website sooner. Please, please see your doctor and FIGHT!!! if thats what it takes to have your medication changed if you feel that your personality has changed completly

Miss Lynda Boston, Ma.

Dr. Jason, Here's some info: I'm alergic to it! I had just learned how to curb the behavioral side effects, then showed my neurologist the rash on my torso. He almost jumped out of his chair. That's a potantially fatal allergy. He took me off it, obviously. Now I'm on Keppra, and have been for a few years. I take seroquel for the modd swings the Keppra caused me to have. Anyway, check out my blog, and please share! http://lyndamcguirk.blogspot.com/

Thanks, Lynda

Thank You.

I will Fight, because it is wrong for people to lose their minds for the sake of 'doctors' getting rich while pharmaceutical companies have them push their poisions onto us. They may help some, but I believe the issues can't allways be treated with this or that med. The mind is a complex system, and druging it only tends to fog things up, or make other areas of the body not respond in ways we would like for them to. And In My Humble Opinion... we consumers need to put a stop to this maddness. Unless we honestly want to become mindless slaves to the corporate system in place we need to put an end to this maddness before 0ur freedoms become a thing of the past.

OUR MINDS ARE NOT DART BOARDS!

I pray that we all can come to an understanding of a willingness to work together. God Loves Us All, and I have Faith in All Of You. God Bless You All,
