seizures with periods

Had a few questions and didn't know if anyone could help.  Back in March I began taking Dexatrim diet pills.  I was fine for about 10 days and when I got my period, I had my first 2 seizures.  The first one happened around noon, my husband was home and he called for an ambulance.  They took me to the hospital, ran tests and discharged me around 5:30.  I came home and pretty much went to bed.  Around 1:00 am I had another seizure, my husband took me back to the hospital and they admitted me.  I was there for 2 days and they ran all kinds of tests.  Everything came back ok and the neurologist blamed the pills.  I didn't have any more seizures until last Tuesday night.  We went to an amusement park, I took a Dramimine around 11am.  We came home, I got my period, went to bed and around 5:30 am I had another seizure.  I called my doctor and the neurologist.  My doctor said to get the 6-hour EEG done.  I have it scheduled.  My neurologist called me last night and told me to get an EEG and MRI scheduled ASAP.  I am  in the process right now.  Didn't know if anyone had any insight.  I am a 36 year old woman, mother of 2 small children who never had any problems until March.  Thanks for any insight.

RE: seizures with periods

It could of been several  issues the diet pills and your menstrual cycle. Be careful with the pills that can be very dangerous.Lisahttp://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/

RE: RE: seizures with periods

I'm not sure.  I went and had an EEG and MRI done yesterday, so we will see what happens.  I feel fine and I haven't had anything happen to me since last Tues. when I took the Dramimine.  I will never take another pill--I can guarantee you that.  Thanks for responding.Kathy

Re: RE: RE: seizures with periods

Did you find anything out about the connection with the Dexatrim? I have done some recent reading about diet pills and how they trigger predispositions to seizures. I also had my first seizure after taking diet pills. It might have nothing to do with your period.

Re: RE: RE: seizures with periods

RE: seizures with periods

Some types of seizure disorders are cyclical and happen only at period. Same thing happened to my16 yo dd, two seizures in 24 hrs on first day of her period a few months ago. Make sure u get enough rest around your period and stay as stress free as possible. Neurologist will help with putting you on treatment w/ meds.~W

RE: RE: seizures with periods

Thank you for your insight.  I see my gyn/ob for my annual checkup next week, so I will definitely be sharing this info. with her.  Kathy

RE: RE: RE: seizures with periods

Hi Kathy,I also have an increase around my period. I had my first seizure (grand mal) in May of last year and have had 2 since. I wasn't on meds when I had the last two because they were trying to find out if I had epilepsy or if I just had an isolated incident related to stress and/or fatigue. At any rate, I am on meds and haven't had any more grand mals, but around my period and when I am ovulating, I have more difficulty w/simple partials (for me, they are like little instances--deja vu, memory and recall challenges, etc.) I read somewhere (on this site, I think) that they have found a link between female hormones and seizure activity. I guess people who have E and were controlled before menopause have to get new medicine or increase dosage etc. I wanted to let you know that I also have children and since having this just appear in my life is very stressful and scary. At first, I spent a lot of time trying to find the cause, what was I doing that I could change or what did I do to cause this to happen etc. I finally realized that that was wasted energy--I have epilepsy, I will take meds for the rest of my life and I will learn new ways of doing things to make it bearable. I know that this won't mean anything to you until later when you come to your own place but I just want to let you know that it can get better and your anxiety is normal and warranted. Good luck...if you want to e-mail me, my address is toniaho_2000@yahoo.com. I'm glad you are being assertive and taking care of yourself by going to the dr.(s), searching for resources, and asking for help! Toni

Re: RE: RE: RE: seizures with periods

Hello,

My name is Livia. Iam a mother of 3 children. Back in Dec. 05 I suffered a seizure. I couldn't believe this happened to me. I went to see a neurologist and had all kinds of test done and nothing was found. I started doing research on the internet and found this site. I noticed I had the seizure at the time of my period. Just last week I suffered another seizure around the time of my period. Iam going to ask my doctor to give me a blood test to have my hormones checked out. Iam 40yrs. old. I take it hormones can also make you have a seizure.

RE: seizures with periods

Hey I understand what you're going through. B4 I was medicated for my SPE-TLS i never noticed if my sz were cyclical or not (i had them consistently lol). After i was medicated I began to notice increased sz activity around that time and generally all my sz since being medicated are during my period. The diet pills are a strong issue for me, b/c i have a dear friend who is battling anorexia/bulimia, and yes most likely the increase in energy was what caused your sz. SZ are electrical disruptions in the brain and diet pills with those energy boosters are terrible for increasing electrical levels in the brain. The same with the dramamine, it is almost a sedative so the brain works harder to produce enough energy. My advice (completly non clinical) embrace your weight and say AWAY from over the counter stuff of all kinds until you are diagnosed or recieve the proper medical care.  Sunshine and Daisies, ~Cass

RE: RE: seizures with periods

Cass--Thank you for your information.  I will absolutely not take any more pills--I never had problems before, but since March I can't be too sure--NEVER again.  Haven't had any sz since 8/9, we'll see what happens next month. Thanks!Kathy

RE: seizures with periods

catamenial seizures is what my research has told me seizures around menstrual cycles are called. i began having grand mal seizures when i had viral encephalitis now i have simple partial ones before my menstrual cycle or when i am feeling fatigued. i began tracking my behavior on a spreadsheet. i recommend doing the same and you may see why and when these happen. i can now pinpoint when i will get a seizure. what is unfortunate is i am taking medicine and have been for 4 years now.

RE: RE: seizures with periods

Do you get them every month?  I got them in March and then not again until August.  In March I was using Dexatrim for 10 days without any problems and then I got my period and my first seizure.  No activity until August--took a Dramimine, got my period, had a seizure.  I think it could be a combo of taking a pill and having my period.  I have ob/gyn appt on Wed and neuro appt on Friday.  See if they can come up with anything. Thanks for your advice.Katie

RE: RE: RE: seizures with periods

I am supprised you weren't bouncing off the wall with your seizures.  To put things bluntly do yourself a favor and lay off the dexamine.

RE: seizures with periods

I also have catamenial seizures. Gotta love being a woman sometimes! I have had seizures since I was 20 ~ I'm 37 now ~ and I have noticed in the last 10-12 years that there has been an increase of my complex partials around my menses. The last one I had I totaled a car (needless to say I'm not driving anymore)PLEASE don't take any more diet pills....I am echoing what others have said on here, they only make you hyper and mess with your system and quite frankly, in the long run, they don't work. Good old fashioned exercise and eating right helps. I hope you are doing better, and take care!Megan

RE: RE: seizures with periods

Megan, Talk to your doctor about using a natural progesterone.  Some doctors supply that for patients with epilepsy. I take a natural progesterone from a compound pharmacist. I know my doctor offers it, but I dont know if it is natural. The ingredients should say. USP wild yam.During perimenopause or menopause, we either get better with seizures or get worse. Check out my support group for hormone and menopause articles in linksLisahttp://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/

Re: RE: RE: seizures with periods

I totally agree and recommend this to any one suffering with menopausal seizures.

I am 51 and started having seizures about 6 years ago. After seeing numerous doctors I suggested to one of them that I thought my seizures might be related to menopause ... an idea he blew off. Finally, I started searching the web and found a doctor in the Boston area, where I live, who specialixed in pre menopausal seizures. I contacted him and, after several tests, he 1) took me off of Dilantin (bad!!!) and put me on Keppra and Lamictal and also started me on Natural Progesterone. I have not had a seizure in almost 2 years but still do experience auras and the feeling that one is coming. 1 half of a Lorazepam stops it. I highly, highly suggest talking to your doctor about this. I saw my doctor the other day because I am now having migraines and vertigo, also symptoms of perimenopause. There is a shot out there that you can get to completely bypass perimenopause and go right to menopause. It may be an option for some.

Just my input and thoughts on this subject.

RE: RE: seizures with periods

MeganThanks for your information.  I will NEVER take anymore pills.  I go to the doctors this week so I will see what they say.  Hope you are doing well.Kathy

KATHY - DIET PILLS

KATHY, I just read your post about seizures and diet pills. Wow. Does your life sound like mine. How are you doing?
I started taking Herbal life and started having nocturnal seizures that I have been able to wake up from. But, I have been off the Herbal life for 1 week and a half, and still have all the symptoms of the seizures. Do you still have them, and how long did it take before you stopped taking the diet pills that it all stopped????
Thank you. I appreciate any comments!

Dramamine and Diet pills

Do those dramamine or diet pills have ephedrine or Ma Haung as an ingredient?

Re: seizures with periods

I to have seizures around my monthly cycle.I start about a week before with tiny auras.Periods have a big role in epilepsy I think.

Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi, I too have a seizure before and after my period. I was told to get a hysterectomy and that would solve the problem. Let me know if you hear anything. My e-mail is sang_nam@sbcglobal.net.

Re: seizures with periods

Hi, I too, have seizures either right before, right after and/or during my periods. I'm 43 now, and have had this since I was almost 16. I've been on phenobarbitol, dilantin, lamictal, tegretol, depakote, depakane and carbatrol. I'm sure I've forgotten a few, too. None of these has ever fully controlled them. My neurologist is getting ready to switch me to keppra. We'll see what happens with this one....wish me luck.

Re: Re: seizures with periods

It seems to be a running link with women and seizures at their period. I get seizures around ovulation and menstration. I just started birth control a month ago to help with cramps and heavy flow and I did not have any seizures at what would have been my ovulation time. I still had one on the first day of menstration, but I am wondering if that might change next month as my body is more used to the hormone. We will see. Has anyone else found that birth control helps?
Mary

Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

Birth control helped mine a great deal. I also get seizures around my periods, and month to month it never fails. Unfortunately, my Tegretol and birth control don't mix, so if I don't want to conceive I have to use a different method of birth control, and deal with the monthly spells.

Hope this helps,
Susan

Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi Peggy,

I to seem to have them right after my midcycle or right around my period too. It is not like that every month but for the most part it is. I am a year older than you and started having seizures at 8 years old. By the way I have partial and complex partial seizures. The seizures were not really too bad or even on a monthly basis until I got into high school and started my period for the first time. I also like you have been through all of these medications (8 so far). I am currently being tested for surgery to remove the scar tissue in my temporal lobe that they believe is the cause. An interesting thing I wanted to tell you about my experience with the Keppra (I also take Depakote along with it) is that ever since I started taking it in early 2005 I have ONLY had nocturnal seizures where I wake up at night or have them in my sleep. That is the positive side. The negative side in my case is that it is making me so tired and depressed. So I have to weigh the good with the bad. Let me know how it is working for you.

Re: seizures with periods

Toni Munson
I had my first seizure after the birth of my 3rd child. I am now on Tegretol. Every time right before, during, and after is when I have more seizures. The Tegretol cannot control them. The rest of the month the Tegretol does fine. I have read about these seizures and read that progesterone is being used and has helped so many with this. I am going to go to my doctor and talk with her about it for me also. My first seizure was at the age of 28. Now I have the small ones.

Re: seizures with periods

 Toni,

I started w/ my seizures at 8.  Pre puberty I guess...lol  I have hormone sensitive/complex partial seizures .  Iam 44 yrs old & have been controlled most of my epilepsy life Well now Im peri menepausal & about 6mths ago my pre ovulatory (when the estrogen spikes) seizure had come back.  I got the natural compounded progesterone (difficult to find a dr who will prescibe it) & haven't had a seizure the past 2mths I've been on it.  They wanted me to take it from day 14-28, well I changed it to day 9-23, cause day 9-12, between 11-3pm is when I would have my seizure. Progesterone should help you w/ this battle!!!  Good luck!!  Let us know how u do!

Re: seizures with periods

Dear Katie,
It sounds like your neurologist is just trying to be thorough with the scheduling of the MRI. I am 46, when I was 24 I had 2 grand mal seizures about 2 weeks apart. They were around my cycle time, and I believe I had been taking one of the over the counter weight loss aids, probably dexatrim at the time. I was at work, I started feeling the DeJaVue, my stomach was giving me that feeling like I was getting ready to fly down the roller coaster, I knew what was going to happen next, I wanted it all to stop so I just shut my eyes and the next thing I knew an EMT was standing over me asking me my name etc., to see how oriented I was etc., and was going to take me to the hospital, and I told them that I did not want to go with them. I went home that evening thinking it was just a single episode that would never happen again. Well, low and behold a few weeks later, it did, and then was when I proceeded to make an appointment with a neurologist, which at the time I really had no idea of what a neurologist really was, but I did my research and knew that was where I needed to go. We did the EEG and the CAT Scan and I went into his office for the results. The doctor said I have some good news and some not so good news. He said the good news is that you don't have a BRAIN TUMOR, the not so good news is you have a mild case of EPILEPSY. I did speak to him about the hormone connection but he didn't seem to think much about it back then, other then to say that he had heard something about it. Once or twice I was able to stop my medication, I was feeling fine, not having any problems what so ever. You never stop medication abruptly, never without a doctors O.K.. You taper off if it is O.K.'d due to the effects that the meds have on your nervous system and the amount of time that you have been on them, if you stop cold turkey you can throw yourself into a seizure. I believed it to be hormonally related because I had petit mal episodes when I was younger around my cycle beginning around the age of 15 or 16 would happen maybe once or twice a year. I also notice the more weight I would put on the worse the symptoms would be, and probably due to the estrogen and fat connection. I believe that estrogen is the number one biggy of the hormones that gets you out of whack. Evenutally, I did get a hysterectomy mainly due to having uterine fibroids, but after the hysterectomy I rarely have an episode of any kind. I am however on one anti seizure med., after about 2 1/2 years I had a seizure, so I went back to the doctor to be put back on an anti seizure med. I believe part of it is my weight, right now I'm taking topamax which is suppose to help with weight and seizures, so far so good. I have one child that I have had biologically. I had her after I had the fibroids removed once, then I had her c-section, then the fibroids returned, then I had the hysterectomy. I tell you, estrogen is a strong hormone. Now I have the hormones regulated this way. I have a saliva test sent to a lab to determine what my body needs or doesn't need: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, (they also check your cortisol level), then results are sent to my doctor who has the compounding pharmacy make up my exact mix. It sounds like you are having the right tests done. There are things you can do now to balance your body out that we were not able to access before that we have access to now. Be in charge of your health. Do what you feel you need to do to be healthy and happy for yourself and your family. If you feel you need to get a second, and or third, etc.. opinions. Hope this is not TMI. Good Luck!
Bobbi

Re: Re: seizures with periods

I didn't know they could do that kind of testing! I had begun to have more frequent & more intense seizures, which we eventually connected to hot flashes. (It took me awhile to figure out that was what was going on). My gyn & my neurologist have given me the blessing on taking Relacore (over-the counter) along with my regular E meds. It helps control cortisol production and has been a great help in controlling my hormones during perimenopause. It actually is sold to help eliminate belly fat but as I read the label it explained about controlling cortisol and reducing stress (caused by hormones).
I wish I had found this stuff years ago! I have never felt better, except when I was pregnant & swimming in progesteron.

Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

De

I am soooooooooo glad I have found a forum that has had the same symptoms as I for the pass 20 years. Seizures accompanied with periods. I have been suggesting this for years and no one believed me, except one neurologists but had no suggestion other then EFFEXOR that drove me up the wall. I finally suggested a very low dose of Ativan as I needed (30 pills last more than a year). Helped quite a bit. Here recently, I've been thinking of Relacore (for the anti-stress value instead of dieting) and was glad to read your comment. I am glad it is helpful to you. I have been seizure free for many years with the control of Dilantin but continue to have anxiety around my periods. Will you please keep me informed? I'm just about ready to try it, but still cautious. I am going to talk to my MD about it. IT ALL MAKES SENSE TO ME!!! I am 44 y/o and menopause is just around the corner. Seems like I need something quickly :).

Re: Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

I am 47 years, I started having seizures three years ago the result of having Neurocysticercosis. That is I had a parasite (in larve state)that traveled up into my brain. I started having EXTREME head pain, disorientation, loss of muscle control...the list goes on. Any way landed in ER and within 30 minutes had a Grand mal, then seizured for 2 days straight every 5-15 mins. Was in Neuro-intensive care for 14 days. With medication it was under control. I was on Tegretol for a year, no more seizures after leaving the hospital. Suggested for my condition is 1-3 yrs. on medication. My neurolgist and I agreed for me to go off. Three years being seizure free..then blamo another Grand mal, another 8 days in the hospital. I have noticed that both times leading up to the seizures it was at the time of my period. A couple of days ago I started to have what I think were partial seizures, nausiated, metal tast in my mouth, dizzy, the blank stares. Feelings that are hard to desribe. I had my period two weeks ago, (get them every 23-26 days!) today I had break through bleeding. I guess all signs of being perimenopausal. But I think the change in hormones are effecting me seizure wise. This time around everything feels different, it was harder adjusting to the medication. This time I have felt the partials. Before (3 yrs. ago) after recovering from the whole ordeal, I had no more seizures. I felt nothing. So maybe periods, being perimenopausal REALLY does effect life with seizures! I am greatful to have this forum to turn to, I don't feel like..."is this all in my head?!" oh, that sounds funny! But obviously some of you know what I mean. Are there more women out there who can identify with all or some of this?

Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi Katie,

It sounds like you might have a couple of things that could be contributing to the seizures. I have heard of people having seizures after taking diet pills. I also know that some antihistamines can lower your threshold for seizures. Dramamine is an antihistamine I think. Also, it is not uncommon for women to have seizures only around the time of their menstrual cycles. I'm glad your neuro is following up, and not just discounting your experiences. Good luck, and keep us posted on how you are doing, okay?

((( Best of luck & hugs ))),
Barbie

I can't comment on the diet

I can't comment on the diet pills, however the only two seizures I have had when I have lost consciousness have been when I was on my period. Now I don't know if this was coincidence or related, just thought I would mention it. Have to say though, now that I was diagnosed with seizures, it does make me worry a bit more each month!

Re: Re: seizures with periods

First time on this site. I was diagnosed when I was 14. I had been seizure free for almost 2 years this past January, but then I had one. Grand mal. I am pretty sure that it was due to lack of sleep on my part. This June I was almost at 6 months free and then last week I had one. I had never thought about the connection between my periods and seizures. Still not sure if I can say that is it since I know lack of sleep is one of my triggers, but in Jan. my Dr. increased my dosage to 500mg Lamictal and I started getting my period about 2x each month. I am embarrased to say I didn't really think about it until my next ob/gyn visit. After complaining about the irregularity of my cycle to my Gyno, he put me on FemCon birth control. 3 days after starting my next period and using the birth control for the first time I had a seizure. Could the birth control actually do anything so fast? I am just so frustrated.

I keep telling myself that things could be so much worse, but sometimes I just want to scream. The slightest twitch and I start to get nervous. I yawn and I keep thinking did I get enough sleep, and now I have to worry about my period too? I hate being a pity party, but I really just feel like crying sometimes. I have had the MRI etc in the last year and they can't find anything wrong. On one hand I am happy that there isn't anything life threatening, on the other, I almost wish they would find something so there was a chance of fixing it and not just controling it.

Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

JE,

I have seriously increased seizures around my period and when starting a new birth control pill.

I now take a new kind of birth control pill, where I only have my period 4 times a year. I just started taking it last week. I had a very difficult time with seiuzres for the first few days that I took it, which is why I started taking it on the weekend, so I wouldn't miss work. Now that my body has adjusted to it, I feel just fine, and look foward to not having a period for a few months.

As far as I'm aware there is no health reason to have a period at all, if you're not trying to get pregnant.

I urge you all to to consider it. You can learn more at this website...

Re: Re: seizures with periods

hi there

I just got my period...and I think i had a seizure today. Ive never had one before, but i was at work feeling sick...i am on effexor for anxiety and recently reduced my dosage (3 days ago) its common to
have withdrawl problems, so i thought id just drive home.

3 minutes later in the car, i began hyper-ventilating and got all tingly in the hands and feet (typical of hyper-ventilating) BUT then my hands began to cramp up...They folded up so tightly with my fingers like claws pointing into my forearms, i could barely turn the steering wheel...then, my feet began to cramp, then my face! I looked in the mirror and was pannic struck when I saw my face looked like I'd had a stroke! I was shaking, not convulsing but quivering...and very sweaty.

I barely made it up to my apartment..i couldnt open my hand to unlock the doors...when i got inside i was still cramped up, but within 5 mins it was over. I guess it was abbout a 15 minute ordeal.

Scarriest thing ever! I think it was a withdrawal symptom, but when you mentioned your period I remembered that I had just got my period.

Has anyone heard of a seizure like this? I read about them and didn't find a type that described the cramping. my muscles still hurt.

any input? Thanks!

Re: seizures with periods

Suzanne -

While there are many different forms of epilepsy, I have never heard of what you have described.  To be honest, it sounds like a side affect of the RX you are being weaned off of, versus epilepsy.  I'm a 53 yr old woman . . . I had my first seizure at 14 . . .  and my last one in 1989!  YAY!

I would double check with your doctor regarding the RX he gave you for anxiety.  Let me know how it goes.

Re: Re: seizures with periods

You should check with your Dr. prior to any medicines being taken. Some cold pills, diet pills and a few others will lower your medicine threshhold. I learned the hard way, I had a horrible tooth act took Ultram that is a big No No as well as benadryl and some other cold meds. I also understand that menstral cyle can increse seizure activity. So check with your Doctor he or she will not mind and it will save you a lot of grief. Take care

Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi,
I only have seizures around my period. My Dr. tells me that most women do have them around their period or ovulation. I was on birth control for a while and it aggravated my seizures. I, of course, am off the pill now. They came every two weeks just along with my cycle. My Dr. also told me it is the hormone fluctuation that is causing the seizures because it is such a drastic change in the body.

I don't know if you ever heard of the pill called Ativan. It is used to help seizure clusters. My Dr. is having me try this: Taking 1 ativan per day, a few days before my period and then during my cycle. I tried it for the first time this month and I had no seizures. I hope it works for me because I have tried so many medications!

Good luck to you

Re: seizures with periods

hi--i just read your comments about seizures with periods from a couple of yrs. ago. i was just wondering how you are. i am 54,still get periods, and now seizure one day a month, usually during my period. i wish this period would end already--don't know what to do--is this med still helping you? thanks!

Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi sdfreeh,
Catamenial Epilepsy is the name given to seizures that occur around the time of ovulation or periods. When the female hormone Estrogen is high, as it is just before a period, there is more of a chance that a seizure can happen. At the time of menstruation, the balance between Estrogen & Progesterone changes, the change in balance of the 2 hormones is believed to account for catamenial seizures. I now use Natural Progesterone Cream and have very few seizures.

Re: seizures with periods

Hello, Are you still using the progesterone cream and is it working for you still? How often do you take it and what else are you on? so many questions, just trying to find answers for my daughter. She just started on progesterone last month (bioidentical cream)Thanks fro any advice

Re: Re: Re: seizures with periods

Hi, up until I just started this website I never knew that having your period could be part of having seizures. I just had three days worth of seizures during my menstrual cycle. I have to see the doctor on July 31st, and I will talk to him. I always thought it was due to lack of sleep, but this may be another option.

Re: seizures with periods

I developed epilepsy at the age of 43!!!  I still can't believe it 5 years later.  I truly believe my seizures are catamenial.  I used to have migranes about every other month.  Killer migranes!  When I was 41, the migranes went away.  I was so happy.  Then at 43, I woke up in an ambulance.  My poor 9 year old daughter had called 911.  Since then I've been tested and tried lots of different meds.  I hate this disease!!!  The financial strain has been terrible!

I'm hoping and praying this goes away when I'm done with menapause.

Re: seizures with periods

I am so upset--I am 54 yrs. old, still get my period, and now am having seizures again for one day during my period, which had been under control for a while with Dilantin and Keppra. I am sure it has to do with peri menopause, and don't know where to turn--if I tell my neuro,he will stop me from driving. So, I am thinking of calling my gyno--but what could he do for me? How could he end my periods--without anything as drastic as a hysterectomy?Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Re: seizures with periods

When I first found out I had epilepsy, I stared getting seizures right around the time my period typically began. I went in for a numerous amount of test and EEGs. The only thing my doctor ever suggested was changing the type and amount of my medication. So we did. Since then I don't get seizure as often it's only when I'm extremly stressed or something of that sort. I suggest staying off the diet pills. They are not good for those of us with this conditon.

Re: seizures with periods

I had a seizure in Sept 2008, which drove my partner crazy.  She or I didn't know what happen.  She called 911 and the next thing I know strange people where in the bedroom.  What Happen?  I'm 49 and that day was one in 2 weeks that my period was on; pre-menopause.  I knew it would happen, but not like this.  Had all kind of test and nero found nothing. My period came and went in Nov and Dec but Jan I had another, and another in March exactly when my period is on.  They only happen, thank goodness when I'm asleep.  Going to a nutrition class, I fell asleep, dosed off and had another.  Wow, the nutritionist knew my doctor and I had an appointment immediatly.  He prescribed Dilantin 300 mg.  I'm taking it now.  I'm one who doesn't like taking alot of medicines.  I had to take this.  So far, tired, hot, night sweats, no seizure but my period is off.  I'm hoping my irregular periods will not trigger another seizure.  I'm only 49 and probably have 3-7 more years of menopause reaction.  Please let this Dilantin help me.  I afraid.  Please someone let me know you went though this and you're ok. Please!!

Re: seizures with periods

So I started having simple partial seizures (self-diagnosed) post-partum with my first child. They went away when I was pergnant with my daughter, After her birth, they started again, but are very very infrequent- like one every few months? The past two days I've had them each day. I was wondering if
anyone thinks this might be a sign of returning fertility- rise in
estrogen?

My nursling baby has been completely sleeping through the night the past four
nights, too. So that might have some effect?

Anyone know anything about this?

Re: seizures with periods

I'm 40 and was a late bloomer, didn't start my period until I was 18. But I had petit mal seizures since I was 8 and lo and behold, had my first Grand Mal 3 days before the start of my period. Every month since, when I'm ovulating, 3 days before it starts, and about 3 days after I have at least 1 grand mal each time. I've been SCREAMING at my neurologists for years that there has to be some correlation. Actually it wasn't even a neurologist that listened to me, it was my chiropractor. She suggested a progesterone cream to help with the hormonal changes during that time period. Said it works better than the birth control pills because it is a more direct approach. Not for birth control but for hormonal changes. I haven't tried it yet. She just told me yesterday because she is treating me for a back injury I received during this month's on slot of 5 seizures in a row.

What my neuro. tells me is that there are triggers such as not enough sleep, stress, not taking your meds, diphenhydramine (benedryl), being sick, not eating, and being dehydrated. Sometimes I really think he just throws up everything he can pick so is to not have to make a decision on why I'm still having seizures.

I've tried all kinds of meds. in all kinds of dosages and mixtures. I've even got the Vegal Nerve Stimulator implant. Still having seizures! Now, I don't mean a pity party. I have had some periods (no pun intended) in my life where I was having few enough seizures to work & even drive.

I never heard of the Ativan for help with the seizures. I have a visit with my neuro next week...I think I will talk to him about that. That sounds like it might work for me! Thank you.

And good luck. Hope anything I have said has helped.
