21 year old brother just had grand-mal, no insurance, Washington state, resources?

Aloha,My name is Amber and my younger brother (he's 3 years younger, 21) just had a grand mal seizure yesterday in Washington state. He doesn't have any insurance. Luckily the hospital he went to has a fund for that sort of thing, but now my question is, are there any resources for him for his follow up appointments-he's seeing a neurologist this week & they've already told him he'll need an MRI. I work in the medical field myself, but I'm not sure where to start my search since I live in Hawaii and he's in Washington state...any help or advice is greatly appreciated.Mahalo,Amber Carlsonamberdawncarlson@hotmail.com

I was searching for a cheap insurance myself as I'm 22 and can't afford to pay too much. I have epileptic seizures and I'm trying to get into a program and get my insurance partially payed from that program. You can suggest this to your brother or investigate the idea yourself. Good luck!

Thank you everyone! As a pre-med student, I feel helpless with my brother's illness. However, we managed to get him started on the emergency medical paperwork for the state of Washington, and he meets with a case worker Wednesday. This board is a wonderful thing and I appreciate reading through other's experiences. Thank you all for your help.-Amber

Just an update and encouragement for anyone else out there worried about medical. After over a month of waiting, and meeting with a non-supportive social worker (who told my mother a seizure wasn't enough for disability and wasn't helpful) my brother's disability was approved in WA state. I think because of the severity of his seizure, and resulting head injury (cracked his head right open from the initial fall, required staples and healing time), as well as a partial positive EEG (according to the neuro, it wasn't 100% positive, but there were enough abnormalities for her to estimate his chance of reoccurance at 50-70% in the next six months), he was approved. The day he got his coupons/approval, the MRI was set up for the next business day (today). Basically I wanted to thank all the people who took time to answer me and post on various other issues. This site has been a good source of information for me & I appreciate. Thanks again,Amber

Amber, I live in Va. My neurologist is the one who suggested SSI to me after a rather lengthy hospital stay. He gave me paperwork to fill out, (a portion of the paperwork was for him to fill out which he did), and I sent that off. The SSI office sent more paperwork,(more like a book) for me to fill out two or three times and then sent me to a neurologist of their choice for tests and 'interview'. I was lucky(?) that the EEG was positive but either way I'm sure they also went by my neuro's and md's records also. It was a long process but I was accepted.Have him ask his md about SSI, it wouldn't hurt. If not, have him check with the hospital-they may have someone for him to talk to that can put him in the right direction. Good Luck! -Spiz

Amber,

You should have your brother contact the Epilepsy Foundation in his area they might be able to help. My son lost his job because of seizures and doesn't have insurance and the foundation here has a program that will pay for the doctor and all tests. Also check with the county health dept for assistance with the medication if your brother has to take anything.

Good Luck,

Betty

Hi Betty: How are you?? We've talked before,,(Tracey) Anyway,,I just wanted to let you &"Amber" know that the 'advice' you gave Amber was just as I would have 'suggested'. I do get 'coverage/insurance',,but here,,(Ont.Canada) would you believe I've tried 'numerous' times to get 'Disability/& C.P.P' yet the 'Government/Social Workers' don't consider 'Epilepsy' a Disability..To me it's "Discriminating",,(Now if it were a 'relation' to them, or even a 'friend',,that person would get it.) Where's the 'Fairness' in that,,At one point,,(10-yrs ago) I had a 'Great' job,But was fired because of it/meanwhile getting fired had NOTHING to do with it, YES I "Sued" them/& won,,But to this day,,I STILL can't get work/Disability...It's NOT Fair.!!!

Anyway,,Keep up the 'Great' advice...

Tracey
