TAKE CONTROL TODAYHi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone has experienced some hair lossor knows of a connection between hair loss and Lamictal? As i recently increased my dosage of Lamictal to 500mg a day, and i'm finding that i'm losing a lot more hair than usual especially when washing it. Any advice anyone can give me would be great!!!
Thanks Robyn.

Hi All,
I have temporal lobe epilespy with complex partial seizures- after a nightmare time switching from tegretol to keppra to lamictal, my hair started falling out by the clump-full. The doctors absolutely ignored me, said it wasnt a listed side effect and wouldnt do anything about it. I'm sure you all know how upsetting it is to first, lose so much of your hair, and second, made to feel like you're making it up and being completely irrational. I started taking country life hair tablets a few weeks after the hair loss started and i've seen a huge improvement. My hair still falls out, but not to the heart-wrenching extent it was before i was taking them. I wasnt really sure whether they were working or whether it was just that my body was getting used to the medication, but having run out end of december, my hair has started falling out in clumps again (showering is a bit of a nightmare) so i've reordered them because they do seem to make a difference. They have shitloads of biotin in, and some other herbally stuff which i think makes your hair better condition (so its less likely to fall out) and it grows quicker so hairs are being replaced faster. Also, whereas before my hair was so lank and thin you could see my scalp, its a lot less noticable, perhaps because its in better condition. The link is below, i only take one a day but they say you can take two so hopefully it will help some of you!

DO NOT LET THEM PERSUADE YOU YOU ARE IMAGINGING IT. You aren't, they just dont want to put you on a medication that will cost more, especially if your seizures are controlled.

I don't have epilepsy, but I was put on Lamictal for drastic mood changes after trauma. I started at 100 mgs and 've been up to just 200 mgs per day for about 2-3 months and my hair is just now coming out badly. It had just gotten long and healthy after losing it due to a big weight loss. It took about 2 years after that and it did come back wonderfully. My psychiatrist did tell me that ONE IN TEN Lamictal patients report hair loss after I mentioned to him that there was much more hair on the sink, in the shower, etc. He was very honest, but said there is nothing he can do about it.
After finding this posting, I immediately took my dosage back to 100 mgs starting tonight. He was going to reduce me in time, now that the mood swings are in control, but the fear of being bald let me take matter in to my own hands. I'll use Klonipin for mood swings, PRN, in the mean time.
Will DEFINITELY update y'all on the hair re-growth. Also going to start on Biotin and Centrum Silver, though I'm only 43!!!!!
Used to be "Red"
I keep losing a lot of hair. I'll ask if my epileptologist can lower my Lamictal dose. I'm even getting bald patches. This is ridiculous!
Happily for me my hair is growing back slowly but surely. I was taking Lamictal 300mg once a day, stopped taking at the end of August after losing about 50% of my hair. I have peach fuzz covering most of my scalp so my hair loss isn't as noticable.
Hi Robyn,
It's extremely important to brush your hair completley before washing your hair. Sometimes unbrushed hair can cause hair loss. I'm taking currently taking 700 mg/day of Lamictal and have noticed hair loss as well. It was more noticeable when I was on Depakote. I thought it was just me. I'm currently taking 4 AEDs: Dilantin, Clonazepam (Klonopin), Lamictal and Vimpat. It might be a combination of them all, or just the Lamictal. I see a lot of hair in the shower, on the floor, clothing; just about everywhere!
Vimpat is a great drug. I've heard that Trileptol is supposed to be like Tegretol, but I haven't tried it yet. My white cell count is too low each time I see my epileptologist for him to make any changes. That's the only AED I haven't tried!
Hi all, i was browsing thro the net looking for answers and i have just come across this and im kinda relieved that im not going mad. I started dapakote in jan 2011 for my bipolar but after 2 months i started getting hair lose and a bald patch at the front of my head so i told my psychiatrist and she took me off it because i was distressed and put me on lamictal and i been on it for about 2 months and the last month my hair is falling out so bad that when i bath im swimming in my own hair!! Its been really stressing me out and i put it down to the dapakote but thought surely after being off it for 2 months it would be ok but after seeing this im like finally an answer. I been telling my husband its not all in my head and now i have proof and i shall NOT be taking my lamictal tomo which i know i should slowly come off them but there is no way i can continue going on like this any longer but i see my shrink on friday and will be telling her.. do you think my hair will improve?? has any one else had their hair come back or thicken up?? i been crying my eyes out over my hair and being bipolar its a big thing for me!! thanks to this site thats all i say :) x
I recently switched back to Lamictal. The first time I didn't make the connection. I just figured it was because my hair was dry/damaged. It wasn't until a friend of mine told me about the hair loss and how he and others he knew were getting off of it that I started thinking back and realizing that I was losing more hair on it then and now than when I was on other meds. Now I seem to pull more than ever out after a shower and in my brush. My hair's thin to begin with, and the women on my mother's side have thinning hair and hair loss when they get old. I don't need to add to it. I haven't seen clumps yet...but I'm starting to see a little more space on the top of my head. Since I've had two seizures in the last 6 mos., my dr. has upped my dosage from 300mg a day to 525mg. I just don't know what to do anymore. I have grand mals and this is the 5th med I've been on and am tired of the side effects. Tegretol never controlled mine. (Apparently isn't made for grand mals,) I was on Depakote for over a decade and it made me gain a ton of weight (It wasn't till I had an allergic reaction to it that dr.'s decided to let me know that little fact.) Keppra gave me horrible mood swings, Zonegran was great for awhile...till I started having headaches. So back to the lamictal. It seemed like a good choice as my last seizure wasn't as bad as the rest...but I don't want to pay the price of losing all my hair, either. I hate the fact that the worst side effects are never listed in the rx material and the dr.'s never tell you. They only seemed concerned about controlling seizures not all the other side effects when they should let us make the decision as to what we're willing to deal with. Anyone have any suggestions of something other than Lamictal that I could ask my dr. about? I don't want to wait for it to get worse. I'm in my 30's...I'll probably be bald by 40 or 50 if I continue on it.
I can really empathise with you, I had my first Grand Mal at aged 32 j(ust 6 weeks after my sister passed away) , and within 5 months I had another, I was given Lamotrigine/ Lamictal and the dose was titrated up to 300mg a day. I too had noticed my hair was thinning terribly, I mentioned it to the doctors, who seemed to brush this off. Having been well known for my trademark long golden hair this has made my self esteem plummet to an all time low. Although the women on my mums side also have thinning hair (in there mid 70's) Everybody I asked seem to think there was no correlation between this drug and hair loss.
I reduced my dosage over a year ago to 100mg a day as I attempted to get pregnant, I caught pregnant and remained on 100mg for the first 6 months increasing to 150mg for the final 3. My baby is now 9 months old and my hair has began to thin again so it's my intention to drop my dose to 100mg again, (I have to be careful as lack of sleep is currently a big issue with a teething baby) but I'll look at coming off medication completely...although I am scared of the consequences bothways.
I am also under a consultant dermatologist for a diagnosis of acne cysts (although they have no heads to them), these have only come about since taking the Lamictal/Lamotrigine medication too, so I can sympathise with the other person that posted about theirs.
My husband is so supportive but he has long hair. Everytime I see my parting, I dread looking in the mirror, I feel sick inside, sometimes I wake up with a nightmarish feeling that it's all gone, I would love to know if there is some hope for stopping treatment and it growing back. For now I'm going to have to pull it all back in a pony tail and hope no-one notices.
I agree about lamictal and hair loss.. I started Lamictal a few months ago and now my hair is sooo thin . I have grand mals too and I have been doing better on Lamictal seizure wise so far anyway but I'm REALLY losing my hair . My hair was pretty thick now I can see my scalp. I cry about it. i'm on Lamictal and Vimpat. my Dr. heard about the hair loss and she said she's going to put me on just Vimpat ( it's fairly new only 1 1/2 yrs. on the market) I was on Dilantin and phenobarbital for 52 yrs. but started having too many auras so thought I'd change pills I think I made a mistake. I may ask the dr. if I can go on Dilantin and Vimpat.. I hate losing my hair.. I have to do something..
Have you heard if anyone has had there hair grow back or is this permanent ?? You mentioned you were off lamictal for awhile. Did your hair grow back ? please reply I feel just sick over this problem.. Now I have to go through all the seizures again changing pills, it wasn't as easy as I thought changing from one pill to the other.
good luck to you.. thank you, L.G.
Hey just thought i would chime in. I found out i was epileptic november 19 2010 after a weird tonic clonic seizure that came out of no where. I have had other seizures in the past resulting in falls and looking confused after the fall but thats different. Anyways my doctor put me on Lamotrigine(Lamictal) and i have noticed some nasty things about it so far. I have these bumps that have started to come up since i have increased the dosage. They look like "acne" but im not sure and i had a seizure in the classroom in front of all my friends last thursday. I have been on lamictal since i left the hospital in november. One of my friends said to follow up with my neurologist which i am on the 31st of january but these "bumps"are starting to worry me a little bit. plus my skin seems a lot more dryer than normal. can anyone shed any light on this for me?!?! it would also help my mom out too.
Thanks
my seizure was in july 2010. i started lamotrigine (lamictal generic) sept. 2010...i thought i was overreacting when i first lost afew hairs but these last couple of months, i'm soooo depressed ..i've lost 1/3 on my hair!! this is in 5months!!! i was told to go on lexapro to get rid of the depression the lamotrigine has caused... my primary dr. said it's alopecia...the dermatoligist said to get off my meds and use rogain...we live on 1 retirement check a month and I can not spend 50.00 a pop for a hair product that may not work....my family told me i looked fine; now they just say "oooh, sorry mom". the beautician said i have more hair than some other clients (who are in their 80's). my neuroligist said it's not a side effect, it's stress from worrying about my health...a natural hair loss after a trauma.....i don't want to wait till it's completely gone...i've seen the centrum silver suggestion...i use nioxin and the few hairs i have feel nice but big deal...you can still see the whole scalp on the top, sides and upper back. i've read all comments here and think it's strange it's not listed as a side effect, yet only 2 or 3 of 100+ comments haven't lost hair....please...will someone tell me something that will put a positive spin on this...has it grown back for most of you? will it grow back at all??? has anyone had cortisone injections in the scalp? did it help? i'd love to stop crying about this so if you can, give my some positive feed or tell me about the substitutes for lamictal..my other side effects are loss of balance...forgetfullness, not being able to come up with the right word or short tern memory loss. looking franticallly for things that are right under my nose, headaches...it took me 15 minutes to remember how my husband broke his neck!! my friends avoid my somewhat...i feel like a 2 year old i feel so vain worrying about my hair but it's a huge issue for me...HELP
I started taking Lamictal about 10 years ago and have been losing my hair ever since..........at the time I couldn't find anything or anyone that had the same problem on these sites - but it could be that maybe it was new meds to the market - Dr. said there is no correlation but.....I beg to differ - either way you can see through my hair to my scalp - I will be asking the Dr. to change my medication to see if it makes a difference - also the memory loss is unbearable....I retain nothing..........I have forgotten names of people I have known for a long time. And yes I can look for something for 10 minutes that I just had in my hand 2 seconds ago.....really frustrating.....I often can't finish a sentence because the words I am looking for won't come to mind.....for example....I can tell you a hundred different was to use a broom but couldn't come up with the word "broom" to save my life...it's really tough because you just end up feeling so stupid and your not...especially when you know you were different before...... I have all of the same symptoms/side-affects you have 1hairy so you are not alone........all of this has caused my self esteem to plummet.............not sure if this quality of life is really worth it.............I am going to try and change my medication...............I used vitamins, Nioxin and Rogaine to no end and it still keeps falling out.(just at a slower pace).....by the handfuls............... all these things make it difficult to have a nice normal calm life...............
Hello..Im Cecily. I'm only 11 and i was 10 when i had found out i have epilepsy. NOT fun! I'm feeling the same pain as you. Just today,After i washed my hair, I noticed some of my hair has been falling out? I looked up to see if this was rare to have epilepsy and have hair fall out...So i saw this and i thought replyingg would be great 4 me.. Iv'e also been also having memory loss? I'm on Medicine Day and Night. I only took it at night but when i went to the docters, they still noticed i had some jerks at night so they put me up for more medicine. When i went up more medicine,More things have been hapening to me. Memory Loss,Hair falling out,Hair also geting thinner,& iv been itching my scalp really bad..iv used soo much conditioners and none have been workingg....:(
PS please forgive wretched typing on mobile device!
I don't know if this is supportive at all, but you're describing all the symptoms, including hair loss, that my husband has experienced with Lamictal. It beats having seizures, But the balance troubles, memory loss and hair thinning have been NO fun at all.
I'm new to this group and looking for new medical solutions to be able to suggest to my husband. These "side" effects are a big deal! Please keep me I. Mind if you come across any solutions, and I will do likewise for you.
Cheers,
Jane
I don't think you are being vain about this at all. I developed tonic clonic seizures literally out of nowhere in June of 2010 at age 40 (no known cause) and was tried on Keppra first. I didn't have any hair loss on this drug, but it did dry my hair out big time. Topamax was added which caused a little hair loss.
Long story short, the first neurologist I saw moved out of state and transferred me to another neurologist in the practice. I had a bad reaction after my dose of Keppra was titrated up (cluster seizures) and was titrated back down and put on Lamictal XR which caused some major hair loss after I hit the 200 mg a day dosage (about a month ago). I used to have extremely thick, wavy hair...now it's straight and you can see my scalp...yikes! I guess I should be glad that it was so thick to begin with else I would probably be looking at a toupee by now.
There are other options out there for seizure control, and if the hair loss is really bothering you and causing you further depression, I would talk with your neurologist and ask him or her about possibly switching off the lamictal, especially if it is causing you other side effects like the word-fishing, trouble with balance, and memory issues you describe. Not every anti-epileptic drug is the right one for everyone, and even though the Keppra did not cause me any issues, it didn't really work well in controlling my seizures.
I find it ironic that lamictal causes depression in so many people, since it's also used extensively in bi-polar and treatment-resistant unipolar depression. I've also been pretty depressed on the stuff since I hit the 150 mg dose.
By the way, how did you convince your doctor to give you the Lexapro? All my doctor would give me was this evil stuff called Elavil which caused me to have a seizure when I titrated up on it. My doctor didn't want to give me Lexapro or Zoloft because he was worried about one of them causing a seizure...
Anyhow, please follow up with your doctor as soon as possible because it sounds like the lamictal is causing you a great deal of side effects. I hope you are able to find something that will work better for you and have less side effects.
I've taken Lamictal since 2006 for epilepsy. I've lost tons of hair - same as everyone else
NOW FOR THE $64,000 QUESTION
Has anyone stopped taking lamictal and had their hair grow back?
Inquiring minds NEED TO KNOW.
I FEEL YOUR PAIN! I have been on this wretched medication for over 3 years. 150mg morning 125 evening. I used to have epilepsy and I took Depakote and Kepra cocktail for it. Then i got surgery and no more seizures. I was a fatty on Depakote, but there was nothing I could do really. Once I came off of Depakote, I started to have horrible mood swings, bouts of anger, so my doc suggested Lamictal. My mood more or less was brought into control, but my hair started to fall, like nothing I had ever seen. All I could do was watch and cry a lot. I was 21 at the time. My doc as usual denied it. Said I should see a dermatologist, Selsun blue, blah blah blah. When will they admit it? Ah yes, when the makers of Lamictal stops shoving commissions, you know where. So upsetting!
Anyway, after a while the hairloss did reduce, but only after I barely had any hair. Notice I said reduced, but that doesn't men the hair grew back. I can't do anything with it. Either leave it down or ponytail it. I had such thick beautiful hair at one point. Anyway now I'm weaning off of it. Hairloss has started again. I will come back and post when I'm completely off of it. I'm probably going to start yoga classes or something. My heart goes out to all of you who have lost hair, it's painful, being a girl especially. I hope and pray once I am off of this, my hair come back. At least some of it.
Maybe I sound vain to some people, but I took this drug to be happy, to be normal. Yet everytime I look in the mirror it's depressing. I spent so long, so miserable. So what is the point? I think AEDs should be a last resort sort of thing, especially if like me you are taking it for mood stabilization. I refuse to get on anti depressants. So yoga, exercise, lifestyle change is what I'll try. Thanks to everyone that posted, it really makes me feel not alone.
hello everybody,
I need to know if anyone have an idea abt hair transplant, and in case i have a trasplant and continue on taking Lamictal will it be on vain??
txs a lot
Proper hair care for healthy hair is one of the important aspects of personality grooming ,Don't think that thin hairisn't beautiful hair. By taking care of your hair, you canmake it look its best. The best part is, you won't have today for the professionals to do it. You can keep your hair healthy, soft and shiny.
I had to jump in on this thread, I saw my Neuro today and insisted to get off of Lamictal for this exact reason. I told him, "If you don't take me off of Lamictal, when I get home from this appointment, it's going right down the disposal!" I'm close to possible surgery and asked him, "What do I have to lose then other than my hair?" My memory is horrible on Lamictal, it never was until I started Lamictal. My memory in fact, was a running joke at my last job, everybody used to joke if they couldn't remember something, can't find something, call Danny. I went from a photographic memory to forgetting what day of the week it is. He put me back on Dilantin, which I loved and had MUCH BETTER seizure control. At some point in time, (of course I can't remember) an ER Dr took me off of Dilantin and put me on Lamictal. This was more than 10 years ago and I've been trying to get off it ever since! Of all the meds I've shoved down my throat for all these years, Lamictal is the worst. Since I'm only now switching meds, he has me slowly coming off my Lamictal dosage and slowly up on my Dilantin dosage. I'd rather not have my head drilled into if I can control my seizures with meds, we'll see how this goes with Dilantin for a while. I have to say again, after trying damn near any and every med there is for, at least my Epilepsy, Lamictal has given me the least seizure control and the worst side effects.
The first drug my neuro put me on was Lamictal back in 2005. I have been loosing my hair ever since I was a child and it never bothered me, but since starting Lamictal, it is not being replaced as fast. I used to joke that I lost enough hair to make a grown man cry, but now it makes me cry. (I should tell you that I am a woman) I have very dark that was long and thick thick hair, but now you can see my scalp and the sides of my head very well. My husband is about a foot taller than me, and jokes he can see my head and how I will be needing a wig soon.
Anyway, I was on a Lamictal/Trileptal "cocktail" first, for about 6 months, and never saw the hair loss as related to the drugs. Then I was taken off the Lamictal and changed about 6 or 7 different drugs with about 3 different doseages each. My hair has never come back to it's "former self" since the Lamictal. (although it could be the Trileptal. I have never been off it since the beginning. it is still part of the "drug coctail" since I was first diagnosed.)
Well, just my 2 cents worth.
my boyfriend definitely complained of hair loss with taking lamictal. In my anatomy classes i learned that adding certain oils to your diet can help with hairloss
Watch out for this stuff. My hair started falling out a week after I started it, and its been getting worse each day. This may sound vain, but I'd rather be nuts with a full set of hair, than bald and level headed.
Lamotrigene WILL make your hair fall out- Don't let your doctor tell you otherwise
I've been on Lamictal for 8 months (300 mg) & was also on Topamax for a few months. I'm not sure when the hair loss started exactly but I began to notice it around 3 months ago. Along my hairline seems to be the main focus. I've been off Topamax for 2 months now & am still on Lamictal. I'm not sure which drug is the culprit or if it could be both.
Being single & female really makes it fantastic. I may as well have my mom move in and start collecting cats.
I was on Lamictal for a while also and had hair loss. I do think it is medication related altho good luck finding a Dr. that will admit it.
Vicki
Wow, I told one of my doctors that I felt it was the medicene causing my hair loss, but he insisted no it wasn't and every spring/summer I always experience abnormal amounts of hair coming out when I brush my hair! I always thought it was because I dye my hair.
A Success Story
I've been on 300mg lamictal per day and experienced a good deal of hair loss after just three months on the drug. I'd say my hair thinned by 20-25 percent. Not only did I have less hair, but the hair that was left was soft and lifeless.
After about seven months, I've managed to get my hair back to about 80 percent of where it was by using a combination of vitamins, supplements and shampoo. Here's what I use:
1 or 2 Centrum Silver vitamins each day
4,000-8,000 mg biotin each day. I use GNC's Men's Ultra Nourishair supplement, about two to four pills per day. They make it for women too. However, there are other sources of biotin, so look around to see your options. Be sure to take it after meals, as it may make you nauseous if taken on an empty stomach
Nizoral A-D shampoo every other day (leave it on for at least five minutes before rinsing)
Centrum Silver has selenium and zinc for hair support. Likewise, biotin helps hair grow faster and strengthens roots, which helps your hair stay in your scalp. It also thickens hair diameter over time, which helps in covering your scalp and making the most of what hair you have.
Nizoral A-D has two benefits. First, it cleans your scalp really well, which helps the pores on your scalp breathe. Second, it has 1% ketoconazole, which has shown hair growth benefits (do a Google search and you'll find more info). You can get 2% ketoconazole Nizoral A-D outside the U.S. or on eBay. I've used the 1% every other day, leaving it on for about 5 minutes before rinsing so that it has a chance to work on my scalp. You can use it every day, but I've read that you gain no additional benefit by doing so. (On a side note, I felt like I saw an immediate benefit from Nizoral A-D, as if my hair was standing up a little instead of laying flat. I certainly felt like scalp coverage was improved.)
All of this has worked for me. It's taken about seven months, but my hair is much stronger and thicker than it was after just three months on lamictal.
Regarding biotin: I had a burning sensation on my scalp almost daily after my hair began to fall out. The sensation stopped shortly after I began taking biotin. I'm not sure of the connection, but that's what I experienced. So for that alone, the biotin was worth it. As stated above, biotin will make your hair grow quickly, so if you color your hair, you may find you need to touch it up more frequently. That's the downside. (I had about 1/4 inch growth in 10 days.) However the benefits of stronger and thicker hair are worth it. I really recommend biotin, whether you use the GNC Ultra Nourishair formula or something else. Just don't take it on an empty stomach, as it can make you nauseous.
Above all, don't stress, and don't expect immediate benefits. It will take months for your scalp to recover from hair loss. Even during recovery, I had occasional shedding, but this happened less and less as time went on.
I also suggest adding hair-supportive foods to your diet, including eggs, salmon, Brazil nuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, and spinach.
Just remember: DON'T OVERDO IT. Take supplements and foods in moderate amounts. Too much of a good thing can have the opposite effect. Nothing is going to make your hair come back overnight, and what worked for me is not necessarily going to work for everyone. But I do hope my experience is helpful to the rest of you. Best of luck.
Hi! I read your coctail for helping hair regrowth. I went out the next day and purchased everything. Got home and realized that the Biotin was 5000 mcg and not mg. I did the math conversion and I'd nearly have to take the entire bottle in one day. Did you mean mcg? Otherwise, I just blew a bunch of cash.. Let me know as I am in the same boat all the rest of you have shared. 200 MG Lamictal and since we raised it about a month ago, I have noticed a significant amount of hair loss. It's causing depression and sadness as I'm still young! I don't want to be bald or have to worry about this. So, if you have any suggestions about the dosage of Biotin, please tell..
Thanks!
the biotin tablets is it once you start taking them you can't stop. you have to take them for rest of your life. Like it is with rogaine you have to use for the rest of your life. because then what has grow will just fall out. If you stop taking it or can you grow your hair till your satisfied then stop taking the biotin forever and forever, and it won't fall out.
I have been having hair loss for sometime. I searched for "lamictal and hair loss" and here I am! Registered just for this!! Of course in that same search are those who claim that lamictal will not cause hair loss. I beg to differ ----> this a "nice" way to disagree. I have used dilantin, keppra, phenabaritol, trileptal, carbetrol, carbamatzapine. (forgive my bad spelling). Not to mention topamax and lyrica. All these babies have side effects. Most of the side effects, except for those which prevent functioning, are bearable. There is a question for neurologists we need to ask: "What price must we pay to be seizure-free?" I would rather skip getting the driver's license just so I can function. For women, hair loss is not acceptable. For me, lamictal was added August of 2007. Sometime shortly after Ike blew through my neighborhood, I realized that my hair was falling out a lot faster than it should. I didn't notice until that time. By January of 2009, I was referred to a dermatologist. My neurologist is great, but he needs to take what he prescribes (all of them should) before we take the meds!! The meds from the dermatologist brought my hair back, but the hair fell out in a few months later, only faster. The neurologists ought to read this forum. Thanks for your time. Bye the way, I need to get a new wig. This one is wearing out. Thanks again for letting me vent. I hate pills!!! (and epilepsy) I feel much better knowing that there is a reason for all this hairloss. Thought maybe my sex had changed. Take care, ya'll. Just call me Tex...Ziggy
How long were you on Lamictal before you started experiencing hairloss? Was it immediately? I'm trying to figure out which medication is causing my hairloss. I was on Zonegran for about 4 - 5 weeks and I was really fatigued so my Dr. decided to start me on Lamictal. The week I started Lamictal I started losing my hair badly. I am still on both medications right now. The Dr. cannot take me off the Zonegran until I have worked up to my full dose of Lamictal. So I am not sure if the hairloss took a month or so to get into my system from the Zonegran or if it started immediately from the Lamictal. I have set up an appointment next week with my Dr. to discuss this because I have to get off whichever medication is causing it. It has been coming out for about 3 weeks now. I am only 29yrs old and I can't go bald!! Can anyone give me some insight on how quickly you started losing your hair after starting Lamictal. Please help!
Kimberly
I too am petrified with hair loss. Till recently I do not lose much hair but these days after every bath I can see few hair flowing down also while drying my hair, hair will just drop on my towel.
I do not know but maybe a day will arrive that I would need hair transplant surgery
Absolutely there!! I've been taking lamictal for about a year, 100mg 2x daily. I do have thin hair but has always been abundant. I slowly started noticing a change about 8 mths ago. My Dr completely discounted what I told her I had found on the internet. So I've been using Rogaine to no avail. Now I'm freaking out. I'm seeing her tomorrow and I plan to be off of it and put on something more. That is the only change I've had in my life. Any one loosing hair would be stupid to remain on it.
I'm right there with you!!!! I have been on Lamictal for awhile but a very low dosage (100mg) until November '08 because I was also taking Keppra...in November, we dropped the Keppra and raised the Lamictal to 400mg/day and my hair started falling out in clumps. I have thin, pin-straight hair anyway, so it is very noticeable. I have not changed my diet, my workout, my vitamins, my hairstyle, ANYTHING, and baldness does not run in my family, so all I can think of is it is the Lamictal. I asked my doctor and they brought up the stupid "rash" as the only known side effect... I'm not glad to hear someone else is losing their hair, but I'm glad to know I'm not making this up! I agree it should be listed as a side effect. I have bought fancy shampoos and such and nothing is helping!
I haven't and I have been on Lamictal for 8 years!
Wow...I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago. I was put on Lamictal on December 1st, 08. By the 15th, the side effects had started: swollen lymph nodes under my arms, a constant headache between my eyes, and strangely enough my face aged 10 years in a couple of weeks. By February, I realized my tongue was swelling. I told my Dr. that I was cutting the dosage.
I dropped off it completely a week ago, but alas, I think the damage has been done. I started losing my hair slowly at first. I thought it could have been from the stress late last year or even the fact that I had started smoking again. I was told by my Dr that hair loss was not a side effect of Lamictal, but I think it's time that they admit it is. I lost over 300 hairs yesterday. Yes I counted because I had to know that I wasn't losing my mind. Over 250 in the shower alone. They say that 50-100 hairs a day is normal shedding.
Just when I was starting to feel better about my life this happens. There is no denying that the Lamictal helped calm me down. Snapped me right out of a very bad mixed episode, or so I've been told. Now I just want to cry, but for a completely different reason. I was only on 100mgs a day at the peak dosage. Every step I took down seemed to have an positive effect on my body and skin. I'm going to try to add the Zinc, Selenium, and Biotin to my daily routine to see if it helps the hair.
I hope my hair recovers. Don't let anyone tell you it's your imagination. Just because you don't have "the rash" doesn't mean it's not doing something to your body. I don't think the dosage matters either. Mine was very low compared to some of the stories I read. If it starts growing back, I will let all of you know.
Thank You
Hi - I've been on Lamictal and Sodium Valproate since 2001. All my life friends have commented on how thick and wirey my hair is. However in the past 6 months my hair has become thinner and there seems to be less hair per sqr cm. However I've also realised my stress levels changed 6 months ago - only 5 hours sleep per day - get to bed at 1.00 AM - wake up at 6.00 AM - I've moved oversees to a totally new culture - living with my wife's family whose diet has practically no nutrition in it. I'm used to lots of steamed vegetables, fish and green tea - now I'm living of beef, pork, potato, rice, scrambled eggs and salami and drinking 3 - 4 cups of espresso coffee every day - I'm guessing it could be diet and stress related. So I'm gonna try and change my diet. Will see how I go. I'm guessing the Lamictal may not be such a big prob as long as we're being sensible about stress, diet and nutrition. Anyways - gotta go, maybe 8 hours a day on computer isn't helping - cheers, Scotty - skype: my.english.studio
hi, this sounds like fun. I am weaning off of topamax, which from what I've read can cause a lot of weight gain...and am being put on Lamictal, plus I am on 2000mgs Keppra 2x a day, so I'm a bit sleepy....Sounds like eventually, I'll be turned into a lazy fat bald woman....which my husband should really love. whoopee..atleast off of the dopamax I wont be quite as clumsy and forgetful. Hope he likes brains over looks:)
Hi,
I am new to this sight but I just spoke to the pharmacist and he said he never heard of lamictal causing hair loss. I told him the amount I take (600mg) and he said that was extremely high. He said the side effects increase when you are on high dosages of any medication. He said when the dosages are lowered or if you get off the medication your hair does grow back which is great news. I am experiencing bad hair loss since my meds were increased 2 months ago and am very upset because I have been seizure free about 14 years and feel this is way to high. I just started this medicine a few months ago but I want to go back on tegretol. I was on that medicine about 10 years and never had side effects. When I see my neuro I am going to be tapered off this medicine. It has been a nightmare for me. I am very self consious now and feel everyone is looking at me. I had really thick hair until a few months ago. Now you could see bald spots when I wear my hair back. The hair on top of my head is so thin I am afraid I will wake up and find it gone.
These doctors dont know what they are doing and just like to experiment. I would stop this medicine now but was told a seizure could happen. Did anyone ever go off the medication and what were the results. Does your hair come back and is it thick like before. Or do you go bald completely??

Apparently, the dose,ie:the amount in mgs taken daily doesn't seem to matter. My wife has recently started on Lamictal for temporal seizing...She's taking 100mg/day and the hair loss is phenomenal.Quite literally,it comes out in large clumps.Interesting point;her hairdresser noticed this and said something was wrong as toxicity shows up in the hair first. She also has multiple sclerosis and is going in for an MRI to see if there is some relationship between the disease and the recent onset of seizing.

I understand the frustration of hair loss, but wasn't sure which medication was causing it. I started using shampoo which makes the hair stronger, but that doesn't worker either. I was at 400mg of Lamictal a day and now my neurologist put me at 500 last week. Let's hope I don't go bald. Hang in there.
I have been on Lamictal for a year. The dose was increased 6 weeks ago. A month ago my hair started coming out in clumps when I washed it. I have started taking Biotin and using special shampoo and conditioners.
Has anyone had this hair loss problem slow down. Lamictal is the only medicine that has worked for me. Sometimes I feel like a guinea pig and don't really want to try "something else" to see what might work.
Vanity or Sanity? I know it is a stupid question but, I am just trying to find answers and the Drs don't seem to have any.
I was hoping someone here might be able to help.
Wow! Having the same issues, the itching was the first as it was getting worse and the hair proceeding to get worse coming out.I tried everything to thinking the drieness was ungodly so bad there was no control.
I have been on Lamical for about 1 1\2 yrs. along with other meds . My primary Dr. along with my Neurologist suggested (Betamethasone Dipropionate Lotion) yep! there is noway to pronouce it. its a clear lotion and I use it as needed, maybe (now once month) apparently my meds were drying out my scalp and causing the itch along with hair loss. I would check with your dr. and just see what he or she said, can't hurt. good luck. this has been great for me.
also to add I take 200mg. x a day 400 daily
To anyone who is out there experiencing hair loss due to taking anti-seizure medication, try taking Centrum Silver (vitamin aisle at any drug store) once a day. I lost more than half of my hair because of the Depakote I was taking. Trust me, I had an unbelievable head of hair and I was actually thinking of getting a wig, extensions or whatever to hide the fact that I was losing hair.
I honestly didn't think it would work, but after taking one a day for about 3 weeks, my hair stopped falling out. Before it was coming out in clumps and I wouldn't even put a comb through it. So, try it, you never know.
Do you guys think a body wave would make our hair fall out even more? We could try it. Today my stylist cut my hair way short to make it look thicker. Yeah right. She wanted me to ask my doctor about it but I said I would ask you guys instead because the doctors don't have much to say in the first place.
I am on Lamictal and I have been told that all medications
can cause hair loss.
this makes a lot more sense
i realized for the past couple weeks that my hair has been falling out
i was wondering what the reason might be
because i eat healthy food
now i understand..
Hey guys, I actually had to register just because I felt the need to share this with everyone. Ok I was on 1000mg daily for 2 years of this stuff for bipolar disorder... A year after taking it I noticed I was cleaning out my hair brush a little more often, but I didn't think anything of it. 2 years later I am shampooing my hair and as I am combing my hair with my fingers to make sure the shampoo is out, I am taking out like mini clumps of hair. And I just recently told my doctor to shove it and I wasn't taking it anymore, and now that I am off it, I feel like my hair is coming out faster...? But here's the thing! I am a 20 year old female. Strange huh? I like screamed at my doctor, and was like "listen, I have a mental condition, but I am not stupid" I just want to let everyone know I am printing out this whole thing, and showing it to my doctor... Cuz a girl, who has enough problems to deal with should not have to deal with hair loss when she's 20 years old because doctors decide they have nothing better to do than to dope me up on an insane amount of medication that causes it, and didn't disclose it. I really think these doctors get a commission off these meds. I really do.... Thanks!
Tiffany
I've been on it for a while and my hair started falling out and my husband brought it to my attention he thought it was my hairdresser then, I started noticing it also and thought she used a bad product and I became real upset with her. I've stopped going to get my hair done and when I wash it I can make a big size doll with more then enough hair. I'm afraid to wash it, comb it, brush it, it just falls out, it just recently started in th front around the edges, when the wind blows it blow straight on the scalp and I get cold! Ha, Ha, Ha.
I want off also but, you said that it still falls out, what should we do someone can we sue the makers for not letting us know that this was a side effect? I want something done. When you said the hair keeps falling out, what, oh what do we do? I'm afraid I'm almost bald already, my husband said that he will leave if, he has more hair then I, seizures or not and I've been married 30yrs. 3 kids.
