acne from meds any suggestions?

Hi again, My son is on  Trileptal and was was raised to 600 mg twice a day and his face is breaking out a lot with acne.  It use to be very clear.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what he could do?  Does it go away after a while?  Thanks.

The most natural acne treatment for is dieting. Minimize eating on fried foods, caffeine, chocolate, carbonated drinks, salt, wheat, and even milk can make acne worse. It's better to eat more vegetables and fruits instead of salty or sugar packed foods. It is also recommended to increase your vitamin A, zinc and Vitamin B6 levels in your body. And you may also take some supplements, but by consuming foods that are high in these three vitamins will drastically help your skin condition. It is one of the most natural acne treatments.

Also, I stopped using the acne face washes and switched to baby wash. Sounds weird, but it did work for me.

I had cystic acne on my back ("backne" haha) from Topamax and it was resolved by tetracycline. I have read that benzoyl peroxide is a very powerful oxidizing agent that can sort of age the skin, and I know it sure didn't help me, but do some research on that. Minocycline is sometimes used, I tried that too.

@ Penny,
I've been on Trileptal for 10+ years and I've had very persistent acne throughout. I've used every over the counter and prescription acne treatment and i've gone on accutane twice. I'm in the process of phasing out trileptal and possibly adding a new medication but it's been a difficult transition. Not to knock the fine products of neutrogena and proactiv, but i don't think they can do much to fight side-effect acne.
i wish your son luck! and let me know if you found an effective product!

best,
kp

I have been on trileptal. My face started breaking out a little at first. After a few weeks I decided this medication wasn't for me. Since then it has continued to get worse since OCTOBER 06. Please let me know if you know of anything that can help this side affect. How old is your son?

My daughter has had great results with Spironolactone, Minocycline & birth control pills. AEDs frequently cause skin problems. Good luck. Barbi

Hi,

I've had acne-prone skin all of my life (I'm 26 now).  The best things I've found for acne are the following:

- Proactiv, though this works really well for some, and not for others.

- Paula's Choice products, which can be found only online at www.paulaschoice.com.  She makes really high-quality BHA (salicylic acid) and benzoyl peroxide products.  Her products are favorites on many other beauty message boards that I visit.  They are really affordable, effective, and simple.

- I always stick to fragrance-free products, because I find tha t fragrance really causes acne breakouts for me.  I like Oil of Olay's Foaming Facial Wash for sensitive skin to cleanse morning and night.

I hope this helps some!  :o)

hi, acne can come with the AED territory.... Neutrogena makes some wonderful products that can really help. i sure wish i had known about their products when i was younger. some are designed for people with normal or dry skin. stevens johnson is a real concern, but acne is a much more likely scenario... so check with the doctor, and if it is acne, your son might want to tough it out since the med is working for him. i had some trouble with a rash when i was upping my trileptal but it disappeared after a few days. in general i think i am more prone to rashes now that i am using trileptal, but it's such a good med for me that i would hate to change.

Hi,  I'm sure this is not a rash and that it's acne. I will get him some Neutrogena and hopefully it will help a little.   He said he feels like a kid again with acne.  i read a little about Stevens Johnsons on the internet and that sounds scary. this weekend he had 2 more seizures.  last weekend he had 4.  I'm not sure the med is working all that great.  I'm so discouraged.  I know he is too. Thanks for your help.

A jar of Noxema always worked for my acne.

Just scrub him up..... clean out them pores..... and lay the cold cream to him..... It works like a charm.

People (and us patients) are both quite nervous about seizures.  We think up worst-case situations.  You may not think of your son as anything other than "your little boy" but how old is he?  Acne is acne.... and we ALL remember THOSE years with much hatred...... But us boys chased the girls anyway.

Come to think of it you ran too...... (shrug)

Hi, I always used Noxema as a teenager.  but back then (I'm 50) they didn't have a whole lot things to chose from.  I was one of the luckey girls that had maybe 2 pimples during all my teenage years.  Shawn is 25 and always had clear skin so the little bit of acne he getting is bugging him.  Not enough to quit to meds.  I just figured if he could help it by using something that would be good.

Yes,  The acne never stopped the guys from chasing the girls back when I was young and I don't think it would stop amnd now either.  Thank God! HaHa.  Thanks

Hi Penny.

These may help in answer. to your question.Another useful piece of advise is to ask your pharmacist about potential side effects-they usually can fill you in on them, and save you a call to your son's doc or neuro.

Oxcarbazepine
TRILEPTAL
(2000)
Monotherapy and adjunctive treatment of partial seizures with or without secondarily generalised tonic-clonic seizuresRash (typicaly soon after starting), drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea
http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/drugslist.html#Oxcarbazepine

Side Effects - Produces less adverse effects than carbamazepine, a closely related drug. May cause nervous system toxicity (somnolence, diplopia), rash, or hyponatremia (low blood sodium).

my name is courtney. I am 22. I just got recently diagnosed with epilepsy. I have been on PRO-ACTIV for a couple months now. It works really well. You should have him try it, I love it. It hasen't been a problem with my meds. You should try it! have any guestion let me know . I've been on it for awhile

Hi,  It is a well known fact, that certain seizure drugs can cause stevens johnsons syndrome, a potentially fatal rash.  Whether this is the case here can only be determined by your neuro and druggest.  However, if I were in your shoes, I would be a bit worried.

I jusy read a little about Stevens Johnsons on the internet and I I don't think that that is what he has.  It is just a little acne on his face.   His face use to be clear so he is not use to having acne.  But it doesn't appear to be rash like at all.  We were just at the doctors on Tuesday and mentioned it then when the doc asked if he was having any side effects.  I will keep a watch for that.  Thanks.
pennyh...

Neutrogena has a complete acne therapy system available at the supermarket that works extremely well.  It actually worked better for my son then Proactive.  You may want to try it.  It is a lot less drying and worked a lot quicker and less expensive.  I hope it helps.
