Anyone having problems in weight gain?
I started gaining weight some years before when I started Tegretol. Keppra didn't make it worse. It did help control my night seizures... but the dosage was really touchy. When I started it at 1,500 mg a night I had horrible visions. Reduced to 1,000 mg a night (which I'm still taking) I could handle it.I also understand it is a secondary AED, generally used only in combination with another primary AED.
I'm six foot four inches and my weight is two hundred and sixty six pounds
ccraisin, I've been on Keppra for a long time with overall good results. I'm also taking Trileptol & Zonegram. I just figured the combination of all 3 drugs is what caused my weight gain. I've been on a low carb diet and I've lost over 65 lbs! The only other side effects I've noticed is during certain times of the month my emotions are up & down. Which I'm getting use to. Good luck!
I was not on it long enough to know for sure but usually the seizure meds do tend to make me gain weight. Keppra gave me a psychoic reaction that ended in a seizure. I went dancing (literally) in the moonlight in my pjs. Nice for a 55 year old grandma! If my body could have climbed a tree I would have done that too. I loved the drug.. it mad me laugh and I felt so high!!! They threw the drug down the toilet and to tell you the truth I still am sad about that :)
I lost weight myself after taking Keppra the first couple of weeks, also seem to cut my appetite. I'm also taking Lamictal and Dilantin.... If you continue to gain weight , get your self in diet and excercise . I did my research on Keppra and show no side effects of weight gain. If you switch medications , be careful with Depakote , that's a weight gainer.
hello!I am on Keppra, as well as Trileptal. My doctor put me on Zoloft to balance the "down" side of it all. I've never had a real depressed emotion, or a weight gaining problem with either of these. I am a fairly active person though. My worries concern my 7 yr old daughter, she just had her first seizure on Saturday, May 14. She had two small CP, each lasting about four minutes, then went into a dead stare, completly gone CP that lasted ten minutes. I've never had one that went that long.Any way, my daughter is now on Keppra, today is her second day. Since her first dose yesturday she has been driving everyone crazy. She has been like a wild horse just let out of a cage. I wander what all side effects it has on children. Like I said, no real problems for me, but what can it do to her?I just hope it can keep her safe and not hurt her.
to: mak1123my son just was released from a 2 week hospital stay after a new onset epilepsy. he suffered from 100's of myoclonic and atonic seizures a day and then had his first grand mal which was severe. he is on depakote and keppra. i noticed too when they started the keppra he was wild and out of control (very uncharacteristic for him). he was eventually raised to 1750 mg a day which i believe became toxic for him (throwing up and sleeping all day with slurred speech). Thank god we were still in the hospital. He is now on 500mg 3 x's a day (1500 total) and 125 mg of dpekote am and 250mg depakote pm. it seems to work. he is now 2 days seizure free and more controllable. still a little wild but not as much. he does complain that his eyes get "foggy" and of headaches. we have our first follow up with the neuro in a few days and am anxious to see if the eeg is normal. let me know how you continue to do with the keppra, as i have read some horrible thingsa about it. all i know is depakote alone did not stop the seizures at all...only minimized the length. and it took a week for keppra to start working. they may have to play with the dose to find a good level for you. good luck
Keppra was terrible. I took it for about 8 months and gained nearly 70 pounds. I would have violent mood swings--go from laughing and on top of the world to screaming and crying uncontrollably to anxiety attacks, begging my husband to take me to the ER, because I just knew I was dying. And my seizures were still uncontrolled. When I finally got off Keppra and started Topomax I felt so much better and the weight started coming off too.
i myself is taking keppra i was on topamax and i went from 160 to 120 in a couple of months so they put me on keppra 500mg in the morning and 500 at night and i have gone from 120 back to 160 i clean do laundry and i go for walks but nothing seems to be helping where i can lose weight what are the things i can do where i can lose weight and keep it off i still wish i was on topamax but the doctor had taken me off of it.give me some adice on what i should do to where i can lose weight....
Hi. In the past I have taken Dilantin, Depakote, Topamax, tegratol, lamictal, neurontin, zonagran, gabitrol, phenobarbitol, keppra, and a few others I can't recall the names of right now. They all caused wieght gian. Of them all I gained the least amount of weight on Zonagran which I took for almost a year. At first this worked really well in controlling siezure and had few to little side effects. But like with all the other AEDs that I took after a while they all stopped working to some degree. My system did not tolerate the Keppra. I had a horrible reaction to the stuff. It totally changed my tempermant to MEAN all the way around. It is amazing how a few pills a day can change the way a person behaves A. Even more amazing is how long it takes a person to recover to their "normal" state of mind once the drug has exited the blood stream. I gained the most weight while taking depakote. (It significantly increased my appetite.) Several of the AEDs caused more seizure. Gabitrol caused a definate increase in seizure. And as I have mentioned before SSRIs and TRICYCLINEs all lower the threshold for seizure. Anybody else have an increase of seizure due to certain medications? Have a great weekend everyone!!! Blessings. Linda
did you ever experience tremors with keppra?
My son seems to experience tremors if he consumes something with artificial sweetener in it. He is only taking Keppra. We make sure to read all of the labels now.
Hi. I am not sure of what you mean by tremors? Are you referring to preseizure tremors like part of auras? Sorry but I am a bit vague in what you mean. Blessings. Linda.
neurontin gave me worse seizures htan i ever had, and put me in the ER twice. my most regular types of seizures are simple partial and absence, sometimes compex partial. after the second increase in neurontin the ammount of thrashing around unable to get up seemed like grand mal but i remained consois throughout them. hed them 3 times; 25 min. 2 hrs and 1 hr. i haven't had that kind of seizure since stopping the neurontin.-basil
Wow! Your medication list reads like mine. I'm 53 and have had seizures since I was 19. For 20+ years I was on Dilantin and Phenobaritol only, then my seizures started to become a regular thing at night and my medications changed. They all affected my weight.
Since brain surgery in 2004, i've been having trouble with memory and depression. As of right now, i'm taking 2500mgs/day of Keppra only.
I also know that my personality is different, more reserved. I've made an appointment to see a new neurologist. I'd appreciate feedback.
Hey, I've been on Keppra for about 6 months now. My diag. (as far as I know and understand) is Simple Partial (focused) Epilepsy that is causes temporal lobe seizures. My electrical mishap (as shown in my SD eeg) is in such a place in my brain that my sz's can range through the WHOLE spectrum of sz's in the SPE catergory. I've had really good luck with Keppra. My inital dose was 500 mg, twice daily and after a particularly nasty sz, it was doubled. When I first started taking Keppra, I lost weight. After I got over the sleepies that accompany it, I just simply forgot to eat. When the intial side effects wore off, so did that forgetfulness. If you ask me it could have stayed as long as it likes. When my dose was doubled, the sleepies weren't as bad, but I still forgot to eat at times. As for Keppra never being taken alone, yes it is b/c I take it as my only drug and haven't tried any other medications. Keppra has been good for me other than the need for my dose to be adjusted, I have only had two sz's while on Keppra (at 1000 mg), and haven't had any while taking 2000 mg. http://www.remedyfind.com/show_profile.asp?id=62058
I too am taking only the drug Keppra for seizures. In the beginning I was very tired...oversleeping 2 hours at a time but in less than a week my body had adjusted well. Dosage doubled after one week...1000 mg per day. I feel like I was probably having the first good rest in months. Had my first seizure...an ugly one in the middle of Wal-Mart...thank goodness I didn't pee my pants...just a little over a month ago. Woke up in the back of an ambulance going what happened. Was feeling very poor in the months leading up to first noticeable seizure. Thankful that I'm feeling better but it is all very scary. I am a 37 yr old female and this just hit me out of nowhere.
dear sbsw11sorry to hear about the szs. they're hard on everyone (the person having the szs, significant others, family and friends). i am about to start keppra as a supplement to my lamictal. everything i've read about keppra says it's used as a supplement to another anti sz medication. it's not usually the only med you take. cheering for you. good luck w/ the szs and hope you never have any more
omg this is crazy i am totally in your boat. I started on Keppra last May at 500mg in the morning and 500 mg at night. All was fine and dandy till i decided to go on birth control. Which totally messed with my dosage. Now i find that i am best on 750mg in the morning and 750 mg at night. Other then that Keppra has been great but finding the right dosage was like trial and error. It makes me forget to eat too. I just lose the cravings to eat. I have noticed that it has made me a lil more paranoid then usual but i'm hoping this will pass the more i get used to my new dosage. My eyes just get really heavy for the most part. Good to hear your story tho... it's a lot like mine.
my daughter has been on keppra for one month now. when she was taking 250 3x a day it seemed a good dose but now they upped it to 500 2x a day and really a difference. is this possible? she was great on 250 3xday fun, happy, outgoing. but now with 500 2xday she's crying, thinking too much, worried, very withdrawn looking. suppose to call dr. on monday to let her know if she's changed for the better if not, we will probably go back to 250 3x day. we are weining off of topamax to keppra along with lamictal.... so i think thats why she bumped her higher, as the topamax goes lower. any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks
My daughter takes 500mg morning and night of Keppra, and I give her 50mg of vitamin b6 with each dose and also add biotin at night and she takes a multivitamin. This seems to do no harm and have not had any real mood problems except she is a bit more 'assertive' if you know what I mean, but hey, she IS 16! Also alpha lipoic acid to offset weight gain, and along with all this, I trust God and pray a lot!
i started taking keppra a month agoand have been having horible side-effects from it. i'm clubmsy(burned my hand pouring hot water into a mug) and i'm stumbling all over the place like i'm drunk. i can barely get up in the morning and i'll loose my ballance, sometimes just veer off in another direction while walking. i scared to walk on the sidewalk, i practically hold oto the buildings for fear of stumblin into oncoming traffic. it's not helping at all so, i called my neuro to see if i can just stop it or taper off since he said in the beginning that he doubted it would help. he said (of course the info relayed from me to receptionist to doc to nurce and back to me) to stay on it for a full month at max dose to give it time to see if it might help. man, i feell like i dont care what he says and just stop it now, of course the depression isn't helping either, but i'll stay on it.....will probably stay home another three weeks unless going out with someone else.-basil firstname.lastname@example.org
My son started Keppra June 30th 250mg and has been slowly increasing to 750mg. I am seeing the same symptoms as your daughter. I called my Neurologist and I was told to see a Psychiatrist. I am so comfused, please let me know what you doctor tells you. My son has a awesome personality, loving very funny. Now he seems upsept withdrwan, he says he doesn't know why he is so mad.... This is my first time replying to a posted message and I am not sure if everyone will read my response, I would appreciate feedback. Thank you
Hi, It may very well be the keppra causing the mood changes. It is listed as one side effect that could happen, and if it does, it says to notify doctor. It is more likely to happen if the medicine was given right away at the highest dose, instead of tapering up. My daughter is doing well on keppra, but she had bad, bad reactions to dilantin, lamictal, and zonegran which were tried first(rashes, sores, infections, fevers). It was a nightmare, and I had to speak up and demand that I wanted to change from these meds each time, the docs wanted to 'wait and see', kind of thing...She started keppra at 500mg a night for 5 days, then 500morn/500night for a week, then add 500mg a week until full dose(2000mg daily). Parents use your gut, if it doesn't seem right to stay on med, demand a change or change doctors. There is nothing wrong with getting a second opinion! Go thru your insurance to find another neuro asap before doing the psychiatrist thing. Be bold, be strong, go with your parental instincts.
when keppra was introduced we did wean on to it.... 250 1xday for 1 week, then 2x a day for a week, then 3x a day for a week, then 500 2x a day ..I have to admit,, since thursday it seems like the mood of being sad has lifted.... it's almost 2 weeks to the day of being on 500 2x a day. and also since her cycle....maybe the side effects lift after the body adjust. I am going to try the vitamin b 6 like getnbetr suggested. what is biotin? also what about b 12? she needs to gain weight she is 5 -7 and weights 98 lbs. that we think was from the topamax and also her brother is 6ft and weighs about 130 so it's sorta genetic also...I also pray alot especially during med changes as it can be very tedious~~~~~ she hates changing....
pj###i used to have major problems keeping weight on in general, i'm 5'5" and would go under 100 frequently. i had problems with appetite, what helped was drinking ensure plus(i think i tastes better than the regular ensure) it helps with the extra nutrients AND calories! just make sure it's a supplement and not a replacement for food. if they hate the taste you could probably try using it to make a smootie/shake or something. that was the best help i got for either maintaining or gaining weight.-basil email@example.com
bi·o·tin (b-tn)n.A colorless crystalline vitamin, C10H16N2O3S, of the vitamin B complex, essential for the activity of many enzyme systems and found in large quantities in liver, egg yolk, milk, and yeast. HI, I am glad the sadnees seem to be lifting in your dd. I hope the above is informative. ~ WendyPS: A multivitamin should include B complex and be added to the biotin and b6. This should be adequate.
OOPS! Forgot to mention that you can get biotin supplements at drug store or GNC store, etc.Blessings~ Wendy
I certainly had a problem with weight gain between Keppra, Trileptol and Zonegran. Low Carb/South Beach Diet is the only way I've been able to control my weight. I've lost 75lbs and I've been able to keep it off. You have to make it a new way to eat not just a temporary diet and fill in with vitamins. IT WORKED FOR ME!!! WENDYS
