Understanding My Seizure Triggers

Letting others know your seizure triggers may help family and friends know when you might have a seizure and help your health care professionals know when to recommend ‘as needed’ rescue treatments. Include the following information on your Seizure Plan.

Triggers: Write down what factors may make you more likely to have a seizure or times of day or month that your seizures may occur, for example at night, before a menstrual period, when waking up, or when sick.

As you learn more about your seizures, make sure to update this section regularly.

If you aren’t sure of your seizure triggers, visit My Resource Kit and print off a seizure calendar.

  • Record your seizures in relation to possible triggers for a few months.
  • Make sure to note how often possible triggers do NOT cause a seizure.
  • Take this information to your health care team to see if any clear triggers can be identified.
  • Develop plans on how to avoid triggers or adjust your lifestyle at high risk times.
