Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge without physical szs?

I have never seen a case of this, but I could understand from the way epilepsy forms how it could be possible. My understanding is that one of the main factors of epilepsy diagnosis is the presence of epileptiform discharges in the EEG (however another main factor is the occurrence of at least 2 seizures...). It's possible that he has had a seizure that no one knows about (perhaps in his sleep), or that he could have one in the future. However a huge problem in epilepsy right now is that the epileptiform discharges are not well understood, it has been thought they could be there to prevent seizures. Some research has shown that these discharges can effect brain function. So if these discharges are occurring in the same region as perhaps memory, they could be the cause of his learning problems. Effective epilepsy medications tend to decrease these discharges. I obviously don't know if the doctor's plan is to put your son on meds, but seeing a pediatric neurologist certainly can't hurt.

Best of luck!

I cant find anything on the discharges. This is so sad.He is in the 9th grade and tested on a 5th grade level. Is surgery an option for discharges?I cant believe this might be the answer to all of his problems. Will he ever be able to drive? We have never seen any kind of seizure activity they say the discharges are at night and his brain isnt resting and he sleeps all the time.If they put him on meds will it make him sleepier? They also happen when hes drowsy.I am having school problems because hes in 9th grade and on a 5th grade level.tHANKS

Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge without physical szs?

hello, i wonder what kind of epilepsy was your son diagnosed with? i was diagnosed with JME at age 14 after having a grand mal seizure, but they tell me i was always epileptic. i had never had any seizure issues until then though. as far as the eeg goes, anyone who is epileptic will have an abnormal reading even if they aren't having seizures, the brain waves are still abnormal. most meds do make you sleepier, but he will adjust and hopefully be able to get a full nights sleep, b/c sleep deprivation is definitely a sezure trigger! Best Wishes and God Bless!

Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge without physical szs?

Try looking up interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) or interictal spikes. They not necessarily the cause for his learning disability, I've just seen some research about a correlation. If he is not having seizures he will be legally allowed to drive, and will also most likely not be surgical candidate. My understanding is that at this point in time surgery is kind of the end of the road option for people who don't respond well (or at all) to meds and have frequent enough seizure to disrupt their life. It is likely that meds will make him sleepier, but could also be useful. Definitely ask the pediatric neurologist all of those questions when your son sees him/her.

Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge without physical szs?

For 5 years I had what I thought were panic attacks, but it turned out to be epilepsy. I showed no outward signs of epilepsy though. I was finally diagnosed after having a grand mal, but the diagnosis only came after that qualified me for a portable 72-hour EEG. When I had a 'panic' episode I would push the button. My neurologist didn't even believe it was seizures from the reading - made the lab send it down so he could read it again himself.

I am medicated but still have the panic feelings occasionally - most often when there is a change in the weather and a low pressure front moves into the area. When I do have those I get tired and sometimes, but no one else would know if I don't tell them. I'll have problems recalling words and have to kind of talk around it to get to my point.

One other thing - if no one has told you stay away from the main ingredient in Benadryl. That is a major seizure trigger for me even though I had taken it my entire life. Diphyenahrdramine. Read all of the labels before you give your son any cold medicine.

Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge w/o physical seizures

He could have Benign Rolandic Epilepsy. You may have never seen him having an active seizure. It occurs at night. My son is 14 and was diagnosed with this when he was 4. His seizures are not "typical". My son also was diagnosed with a learning disability by the Neuropsychologist, who said it was most likely because of the Trileptal that I was giving my son. I'm in NY and had a great doctor at Beth Israel. My son has been seizure free for 3 years. It was anticipated that he would outgrow it by adolescence.  Keep going until you find a doctor that is right for your son. Be his biggest advocate, educate yourself and research everything. Good luck!!

Re: Anyone heard of epileptiform discharge without physical seiz

ok everyone this is unreal. His eeg stated that it was abnormal because of epileptiform discharge. His pediatrician told me that he was having subclinical seizures. We went to the pediatric neurologist and he acted like we was crazy.I gave him a report of the eeg and he said that if the report was right he would outgrow the seizures but he said he did not have epilepsy and I said great that  means he can drive and get his learners and he said no he should have another eeg in a year and if it was clear he could drive. He said the eeg showed epileptiform discharge and he could have a seizure, was not epileptic but could not drive. He also said that this had nothing to to with his learning disability  but when I look it up it says this is a good possibility. On his eeg it stated that the abnormal readings could be the cause of his other problems.Ithought at last I had found an answer.Im so discouraged.
