Research data from Royal Marsden Hospital update understanding of epilepsy

Date Added: 2008-08-22 06:30:09

Health & Medicine Week via NewsEdge :

2008 AUG 25 - (NewsRx.com) -- "Although evidence-based guidelines on the management of status epilepticus in the general population are available, these cannot be readily applied to hospice inpatients," scientists writing in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management report.

"The treatment of status epilepticus in a hospice selling presents many challenges in terms of choice and availability of drugs, route of administration and availability of monitoring facilities (see also Epilepsy). A case report is presented that illustrates the distinct, challenges involved in the management of status epilepticus in this setting," wrote J. Droney and colleagues, Royal Marsden Hospital.

The researchers concluded: "Commonly used antiseizure medications are discussed, with emphasis on the potential benefits and drawbacks in a hospice population."

Droney and colleagues published their study in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management (Status epilepticus in a hospice inpatient setting. Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, 2008;36(1):97-105).

Additional information can be obtained by contacting J. Droney, Royal Marsden Hospital, Palliat Med Department, Fulham Rd., London SW3 6JJ, UK.

The publisher of the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management can be contacted at: Elsevier Science Inc., 360 Park Avenue South, New York, NY 10010-1710, USA.
