TAKE CONTROL TODAYBrain cells need to work (fire) at a certain rate to function normally. During a seizure, brain cells are forced to work much more rapidly than normal. Brain cells communicate with each other using chemicals called neurotransmitters. An excitatory neurotransmitter causes a brain cell to fire more rapidly and an inhibitory neurotransmitter to fire more slowly. The most important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain is GABA. Sabril blocks the metabolism of GABA by inhibiting the enzyme GABA-transaminase so that more GABA remains for longer at the nerve terminal. This inhibits the rapid firing of brain cells during a seizure.
