Often doctors find that medicines are useful for more than one purpose. Besides controlling seizures, Neurontin is also helpful for some kinds of pain. In 2002 it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat a syndrome called postherpetic neuralgia, pain that follows the viral rash commonly known as shingles.

It is legal (and common) to prescribe medicines for "off-label uses" even though the FDA has not formally approved such use. Common off-label uses of Neurontin include:

  • A variety of conditions in which nerves are affected, such as by diabetes or HIV infection
  • Migraine headaches
  • Mood disorders, primarily anxiety
  • More people have taken Neurontin to treat pain than have taken it to control seizures.
