Carbamazepine, the medicine in Tegretol-XR, is one of the most widely used and effective medicines for epilepsy treatment. It can be used alone or with other seizure medicines to control complex partial seizures and generalized tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizures.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has approved it for these uses in people of all ages.
