Various forms of carbamazepine (the medicine in Tegretol-XR) have been used successfully for many years to treat a type of facial pain called trigeminal neuralgia. Studies have shown that this treatment is effective, so Tegretol-XR is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this purpose.
It is also legal to prescribe medicines for "off-label uses" even though the FDA has not formally approved such use. Tegretol-XR is sometimes used "off-label" to treat certain other types of pain and some kinds of mental illness.
