Lamictal controls many types of seizures. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved it in 1994 as add-on therapy (used with another seizure medicine) for adults with partial seizures. Since then, it has been approved for the same use in children as young as 2 years old. Lamictal is also one of the few seizure medicines approved by the FDA for the pattern of epilepsy called the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in both children and adults. In September of 2006, Lamictal was approved as add-on therapy for primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and children 2 years and older.

Lamictal is also approved by the FDA to be used by itself (called monotherapy) if someone taking it along with another seizure medicine gradually stops the other medicine.
