How to Write and Maintain a Blog

A blog is an area where an epilepsy.com member can post information about themselves, their thoughts, stories, or other information they wish to share. While other users can post follow-up comments to a blog entry, it is different from the forums in that a blog is owned by an individual user. As users create and post new entries, their blog grows as a journal to reflect their lives. Through the blog tools, users can share anything they want and have their own unique space on the internet.

What is a blog? First, the word "blog" is just a shortend version of the term "web log." It's like a diary, or journal, that you share with the rest of the world on the web. With epilepsy.com you can create your own blog where you can share your thoughts and experiences with others. Think of your blog as your own web page and journal rolled into one.

How is a blog different than a forum? A blog is something you own. You decide what goes into it, and you decide what you want to share with the rest of the world. Whereas the community forum is a great place to ask and answer each other's questions, the blog is a place for you to really express yourself.

How can I create my own blog? It's easy. Just click on the Blog link in the main menu at the left of the screen, under "My.epilepsy.com Community." Then, click "Write a Blog" to get started. From here you can share whatever is on your mind. When you click the "Submit" button, your blog has been created and everyone else can read what you have to say. To update your blog, just follow the same steps as before. Each blog entry you create will add itself to others. Just like a journal you might keep on paper, your blog will grow and grow.

What can I put in my blog? Anything you want. Some people like to share their thoughts and feelings, others like to post links to useful websites and articles. You can include whatever you like: daily thoughts, poetry, valuable experiences, cynical rants, semi-coherent comments, writing experiments, artistic babblings, critiques on current events, fresh insights, diverse dreams, and chronicles available for public consumption. Your imagination is your only limitation.

How often can I update my blog? As often as you like!

What is 'tagging'? Tags are keywords that help summarize the main ideas in your post. By entering a few single-word tags with your blog or forum post, you are categorizing the topics you address and helping other users easily find your content. For example, if you are writing an entry about a seizure at work, appropriate tags might be seizure, work, and coworkers.

Who is allowed to read my blog? Any visitor to epilepsy.com can read your blog, but only logged-in, registered members have the capability to post follow-up comments.
