TAKE CONTROL TODAY

In Honor of Peter D. Williamson, MD

An Eminent Epilepsy Clinician and Researcher

WilliamsonThe Epilepsy Therapy Project (ETP) salutes a renowned epileptologist, clinician, and friend whose work has advanced our understanding of the localization of seizures and the benefits of epilepsy surgery.

After receiving his undergraduate education at Dartmouth and medical degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine, Peter trained in Internal Medicine at the New York Hospital (63-65) followed by Neurology training at Yale (65-68). His military service was at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (68-71). Thereafter, he returned to Yale where he was a pioneer in starting an epilepsy surgery program at the VA-Yale Epilepsy Center. One of his significant successes in the early 70s was development of intracranial depth electrodes that made it possible to record very low magnitude electrical signals from inside the brain. He moved to Dartmouth in 1991, where he has expanded his valuable work by creating the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. In 2002, the American Epilepsy Society awarded him the J. Kiffin Penry Award for Excellence in Epilepsy Care.

He was one of the first to differentiate the clinical characteristics of seizures arising from the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. Starting by matching 8-channel EEG and clinical characteristics with early split-screen technology (reel-to-reel), he brought this translation forward through computerized tomography and 64-channel EEG, to high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and seizure detection algorithms. He sifted through hundreds of thousands of pages of EEG to capture the onset of seizure activity to learn what patient sensations and actions correlated with the location of onset. Peter’s work helped us understand how to translate localization in the depths of the brain to improved surgical resection. He has also served as mentor and role model for many neurology and epilepsy trainees who have gone one to become national and international experts. They include Susan Spencer, John Ebersole, Vijay Thadani, Jacqueline French, Paul Boon, Robert Leroy, Joyce Cramer, and many others.

bugattiAside from these professional credentials, his accomplishments include flying single-engine airplanes, collecting and driving vintage autos, snow and water skiing, sailing small and large boats, all the action sports. A Google search will reveal that one of his antique autos won the "Best in Show" prize at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance 2006 vintage car show.

We honor Peter because he has devoted his professional life to understanding localization of the epileptogenic focus and epilepsy treatment in order to help people with epilepsy: this is his greatest philanthropy.
