I am 34 yrs. old. In March, 1988, I had an accident while riding my motorcycle and suffered a penetrating t.b.i(end of handlebar). After spending 7 1/2 days in a coma, I spent 3 1/2 mos. relearning things like walking, lifting a glass of water, etc...
Thank God, I recovered quite well. I took anticonvulsant med's for the duration of that year(phenobarb)and my neurosurgeon felt I could be weaned from that, and I was. I was seizure free and w/out med's until Oct., 2001, when I had a seizure at work one day.
Since then, I've been thru a few different med's which work well, for a while, and then come occasional breakthru seizures. Then they become more frequent and, soon, I have to change med's again.
Sept. 14 of this year, I had a seizure on my way home from work, and rolled my car over, off the road, and snapped a phone pole. I've since given up driving and added a new med. I've been taking tegretol t.i.d(800mg, 600mg, 600mg). After the car accident, my doctor and I added phenobarbitol(100mg once a day, at bedtime). That has done the trick up until now. In the am on Dec 1, I had a petit-mal seizure 20 min. after I took my morning med's.
Once again, it's time to consider changes in my med's, adding/changing.
It's come to the point that I'm actually looking at the option of neurosurgery. I see the effects that my
epilepsy has had & is having on my family(wife & son), and surgery starts to sound like a reasonable course of action.
I'll stop my ranting now. Thank you for the opportunity to tell my story and thanks for being there for info, guidance, and fellowship.
