Dionisio and Tatum (Epilepsy & Behavior 2010, Volume 17, page 210) surveyed 223 people with epilepsy who indicated awareness of their seizure onset. Auras (warnings) were perceived in 60% and seizure triggers in 74% of patients. The most common triggers were stress, sleep deprivation and missing medications. Prediction of an oncoming seizure was possible for 17%. About one-in-three believed that the seizure could be terminated by lying down or resting (which also has a safety benefit during a seizure), taking extra medication, concentrating, eating or drinking something or other miscellaneous activities. An older remedy of pinching yourself was not mentioned. This study has the limits of survey reporting, in that it reflects people’s beliefs, rather than scientific data. But it does suggest some things to try to lessen seizures, and some ideas for future research to document their effectiveness.
