How much easier would it be to bear seizures if you could predict when they were about to strike? Accurate prediction would make it possible to make yourself safe, sit down, get out of traffic and avoid embarrassing situations. It's not a cure, but it could help. A company in Seattle called Neuro-Vista (editor disclosure: I am a paid consultant to this company) has developed an implantable chip that can be programmed to recognize EEG patterns leading up to a seizure in some individuals. The company had a successful trial run in laboratory testing, and has now implanted the first patient with a seizure prediction chip. As reported by Prakash Sharma, Mr. Jason Dent had a seizure warning device implanted at St. Vincent Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. The chip is external to brain, but under the skull, and wired subcutaneously to detection equipment on his chest. At a high-risk time for having a seizure, a portable warning device will show a red light, and a white light for moderate risk and a blue light for low risk. The device can beep or vibrate to notify of high risk for seizures. Other patients will be entered in the trial and when complete, results made public. If successful, this will mark a new paradigm for helping people to manage their unpredictable epilepsy.
